Dedicated to Saint Peter and located on the path to Compostela (and therefore a UNESCO World Heritage site), the Benedictine abbey of Moissac was founded in the 700s. According to legend, it was founded even earlier, in 506, by the freshly converted Clovis, King of the Franks, but there is no historical evidence that this ever happened. Affiliated to Cluny from 1047, it became the most powerful monastery of southwestern France and numbered over 1,000 monks —most likely including lay brothers, though.

There is so much to say about the abbey of Moissac that I will, for the most part, refer my readers to the many lengthy internet pages that describe it, not to mention of course the Quercy roman book by Zodiaque. The most famous parts are the stunning tympanum, the iconic statue of Saint Jeremy and the Year 1100 cloister with its 7- capitals, most of them historied. All of those are masterpieces fo Romanesque art and known worldwide.

The abbey was on the very first list of Historic Landmarks in 1840. It is an absolute must-see for all people interested in the Middle Ages, and we will devote quite a few days to its visit.

This photograph of the nave tells you all about why I will not be showing any more of it: the western part that you see here, together with the magnificent top room above the narthex (which I will show in great detail!), are the only Romanesque parts that remain.

The rest has been redone during the Gothic period and later (check the groin vaulting), and the whole monument is covered in that ugly and cheap painted motif so typical of the 19th century that it makes one want to cry. I will inflict no more of that on you, I promise!

This is dedicated to Tonya (HAZED), who wrote a beautiful testimony for me. She is a talented photographer and wonderful Mom and has the sweetest daughter in the world! I have so enjoyed watching Randie grow . . . she's the same age as my granddaughter Hannah. Children are precious and Tonya captures Randie's innocence so beautifully through her photography.

I am always in awe of those of you that get good shots of animals.

In a garden in Oregon, these two storks were my kind of subject!

These three chaps were braving the strong winds and waiting patiently underneath the Second Severn Crossing at Severn Beach. They didn't catch abything while I was there, but I hope their efforts proved worthwhile later on.

Every year around this time, the so-called "meninas" are placed in specific places in Madrid.

These, let's say, colorful sculptures are dedicated to various themes that change every year.

This year, in addition, a menina has been placed in the Plaza de Colón that is decorated with the official flag of the Valencian region, and that the people of Madrid are dedicating to all the victims of the flood that unfortunately occurred on October 29, 2024, and not only in the Valencian region but in other regions as well.

At the moment, a total of 230 dead and 4 missing have been recorded, as well as tens of thousands of people affected with thousands of ruined houses.

The photo also shows the so-called "Columbus Towers", which have changed their name and exterior design several times since they were built between 1967 and 1976.

Also visible in the photo is the monument dedicated to Christopher Columbus, which was erected between 1881 and 1885, and which gives its name to this square.

And just behind the head of the "Valencian" menina, you can see an angel that is part of the night lighting in Madrid at Christmas time.

Originally, the "meninas" (or meninos) were "young women (or men) from noble families who entered the court to serve the queen or her children."

In fact, "las meninas" is an expression that became famous as a result of the nickname given to a painting by the famous painter Diego de Veázquez, which is actually called: "The Family of Philip IV" in reference to the family of that king of the dynasty of the House of Austria (Habsburg Spain dinasty), which was completed in 1656 and is considered a masterpiece for various reasons.

Dedicated to a friend of mine for Christmas. I started the work in splashes of black gesso and then moved on to oil bars. I overlaid mostly in oil the shadow work. I worked in a cool palatte, thinking of grafittee underlay as if painting an abstract outside for Christmas.
