Various TV, movie and art posters, some from my university days 17 years ago. Also some University of Surrey branded engineering drawing paper, unused as the university upgraded to computer aided drawing the year I started. Free to a good home.

I am trying to declutter the garage and yesterday I sorted out a box of glassware that has been stored out there for years. (The newspaper that the stuff was wrapped in was dated 1994!)

Amongst the items was this tiny souvenir mug which my son brought back from one of his school trips. :)

After a bit of rearranging and throwing out some old plastic containers that I haven't used for years, I managed to find homes for all the glassware in the kitchen cupboard. I might now be able to use the plates and dishes and this little souvenir has been put in a safe place.

At a time when I am desperately trying to declutter, what possessed me to let Ocado add this dinky freeby to my groceries?

From left to right the boxes would be labeled: put away, give away and throw away. The idea came from From Organized Home.com. Declutter 101:Strategies To Cut Clutter.

Andy K, Ocala home guide, with a tip for sellers - declutter, declutter, declutter!

A little dull perhaps - but I've been sorting through drawers recently - on an endless mission to declutter and there are always things to discover. This time I discovered a disk of 50 scanned old photos some of them more than 80 years old.

WHY Can't I think of doing these things straightaway like a normal person?

I mean, really. It was only 14 bux for the 2 stacking shelves, ElJay!!! It didn't break the bank. Doof.

Day 26 of my 30 Day challenge, and today I finally Dealt with a task that I've been ignoring for over a month: replacing the broken toilet seat in my guest bathroom. Because in order to replace the seat, I had to clean around the toilet, and if I was cleaning around the toilet I might as well clean the entire bathroom, and if I'm cleaning that bathroom I should clean the master bathroom, and mop the kitchen floor while I have the mop out. . . . But today I finally dragged out all the cleaning supplies and tools, scrubbed the bathrooms from top to bottom, then replaced the broken toilet seat with a nice new one. And since nobody wants to see a picture of a broken toilet seat, here's the new toilet seat in it's nice cover that matches the curtain and towels in the guest bathroom.

I felt like society would never give me another chance because I had a violent criminal background. I made some terrible choices in my past, and I just didn’t know how to overcome those challenges when dealing with employers or society. It was difficult for me to find the resources to improve myself, my self-esteem as well as my confidence within myself. When I left prison, I knew it was going to be a journey — I just didn’t know where to start.

I found out about Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina’s program through the Darryl Hunt Project for Freedom and Justice. I took a week-long job readiness class. After the class, I started my job search, and it was 9-to-5 every day. I was on foot, of course, and I started at one end of a street and I finished on another.

Luckily, a job posting came open as a machine operator at Carolina Fabric four or five weeks after I finished the job readiness class. I obtained the job; it was only minimum wage at the time, but I went into the job with an attitude of gratitude.

In the past year and a half, I’ve been going to night school for welding, as I aspire to be certified welding inspector.

I would tell people looking for a job that you should never judge what you’ve done in the past. The first step is to forgive yourself — because if you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will.

52 weeks of 2015 - Week #1 "Out with the old"

I know the theme is conceptual, but a literal interpretation was easy for me! We are nearly empty nesters, and 2015 is going to be a year of decluttering and downsizing! Happy new year!

About 25 years ago, the photographs were left to my parents in a Will by their next door neighbour of 30 years. At the time I said I'd look after them. Decluttering the attic I found the box with them all in. Many of them were taken in Norwich photography studios. I'm trying to date them as there's not much information on them. I guess they must be late 19C. They are not being added to the declutter pile. I'll carry on looking after them.

Our last big project completed in the living room were the "fake" floating shelves from Sunset magazine DIY. Now to declutter.

the solution is hot water, distilled white vinegar, and a few tablespoons of borax (the only product I use that's known to be at all toxic); I also sprayed it down with my all-purpose cleaner, which contains (filtered) water, distilled wh. vinegar, Dr. Bronner's liquid castile soap, and borax.

It's day 29, which means there's only 1 day left in my 30 Day challenge. Today I tackled the Desk, which always seems messy and cluttered no matter how many times I clean it. But on the way home from work today, I stopped at Staples and picked up some cute organizer boxes (yes, I caved to the Martha Stewart collection, but it's so CUTE!!!) then came home and made a once-and-for-all effort to Declutter my Desk. And I did it!!!! All the usual little random bits and pieces and papers and miscellaneous things are finally neatly stored into appropriate boxes, and the boxes have LIDS so even though the contents might be random, they still look neat. And I downsized the pen jar to something that's a little more visible, then re-homed a bunch of stuff that really shouldn't live on the Desk. End result: my Desk actually finally feels very streamlined and organized.

It's the 24th day of my 30 Day Challenge, and I spent a few hours Dealing with the futon space in my library/guest room. For months now it's been in "bed" mode, overflowing with pillows, blankets, throw pillows, and even more pillows. And the storage bin underneath was a black hole of the unknown. Today I took it all apart, Donated most of the pillows, a lot of the blankets, some pillowcases, and the three (yes, 3!!!) shower curtains hiding underneath. Then I put 2 winter blankets in a blanket bag, added 1 medium weight fleece to the box, and flipped the futon into couch mode. Topped with just a few pillows and a couple throw blankets, it no longer overpowers the entire room.

Declutter time, letting this wonderful camera go. Fantastic, but I just don't need it and my FE2 gives me all the 35mm fun that I need.

Here are Day 3’s offerings.

7 mugs of varying sizes and patterns. None of these match and yesterday we bought 2 sets of 4 that match, so we don’t need these any more. There are only 2 of us after all! These will be offered on Freecycle – if there are no takers, I’ll take them to the Oxfam charity shop next week.

A dozen plastic plates, not the disposable sort, the kind you use on picnics. I think I had these for when I did refreshments for an annual charity event. Someone else took over and I was left with these. We don’t use them so might as well find them a new home. I’ll Freecycle them or let Oxfam have them.

A box of drawer liners with one missing. These have been in a drawer for ages and have mostly lost their smell. I don’t actually like the pattern on them so wouldn’t use them. I’ll Freecycle them or take them to Oxfam.

A novelty headband with Devil’s horns. This was given to me by my sister for a charity tombola, but I don’t think it’s suitable. It needs 2 batteries, and lights up when switched on. As Halloween is coming up, I’ll offer it on Freecycle. Somebody might like it.

A nursery rhyme jigsaw with big pieces. I bought this at a charity shop when I was doing altered art jigsaw pieces. I also bought about 6 other jigsaws with even larger pieces, and have only ever used about 6. So this one can find a new home in Oxfam as I don’t need it.

3 diet books on the GI diet. I haven’t followed this diet, so might as well get rid of these books. I was successful when I went to a slimming club, and when I decide to lose weight again I will follow the club’s diet again.

An empty bathroom cleaner bottle. We had 2 of these on the go in the bathroom at the same time, and this one only had a few drips left in it, so I emptied them into the other one and disposed of this plastic bottle in the local council’s recycling bag.

2 small Tupperware containers. I don’t really need these any more and can’t think of anything to do with them except offer them on Freecycle, or give them to Oxfam.

A jumper that has stretched in the wash. It doesn’t fit me any more, it got stretched widthways and looks far too baggy, so I will put it in the textile recycling bag. Our local recycling facility has a bin for textiles so next time I am passing I will put it in.

And finally – a cat identity tag. Don’t ask me why I’ve even got this because I don’t have a cat! I think I bought it for some craft project or other and it seemed a good idea at the time! I think Oxfam will benefit from this item.

Just goes to show what weird and wonderful stuff I hang onto that I don’t need any more. Thank goodness for Freecycle and charity shops is all I can say!

Rubbish subject for day 42/365. This is the only photo I took, using a fisheye lens (which is sadly not mine but now I want one!). This is where I sit and work on my photography. I need to declutter this room! My treadmill lives here too, I run from time to time.

The letter on my desk is my invitation to an interview for a BA (Hons) in Photography.

The interview was very tough, and I came out pretty dejected, which is why there was no more photos taken yesterday.

Today though, I got an offer of a place starting in September, yay, I'm going to be a student (at the age of 48!)

My journey started with handshakes and smiles from two ladies, Clarice and Diane. I was led into a room with just a table, chair and telephone. What I didn’t know was that the telephone was going to be the tool of my trade at Goodwill Industries of Tulsa (OK).

So what is the result of all these phone calls? Well, for one thing we met our quota for the month of September and then some. But is it really about numbers? No. It’s about helping people and changing lives that matters.

Having lunch with Diane, Paul and Greta every day was the high point of my day — there was always joy and laughter around the lunch table. But the biggest gift I received was knowing I made a difference in someone’s life — to hear the joy in a person’s voice when I told them, “Come in and get a $35 clothing voucher for your new job,” or to have someone stop by your desk and say, “thank you,” with a smile on their face.

I never can say thank you enough to the people at Goodwill® for showing me how to really care about someone else’s life. It was and always will be a positive and life changing part of my life.
