This is about as cleaned off and decluttered as it gets. Stack of canvasses to paint, laptop, dressform waiting to be painted, and the ever present container of cleaning supplies. If I leave enough of them around they might start using themselves!

I've wanted a new desk for quite some time, but really can't justify the expense when the table I was using is perfectly good, aside from just not fitting the small computer nook too well. Therefore, Darren and I looked around at what we could use to build a desk, and came up with this; two sheets of plywood fastened to two chunks of fence post with some very long wood screws leftover from an older project. We set it on two old nightstands. We keep thinking of ways to improve on the design, but all of them cost money, so I'll just try this one out for awhile...

Felt a bit better today so a bit more enthusiastic about finding bits to declutter.

Found a bit more today as we took down the Christmas decorations and I managed to have a sort out.

From top left:

Box of toiletries from under the bathroom sink. There’s cotton wool, a new talcum powder, cotton buds, that type of thing. Gave these to a friend for a homeless shelter.

A bag of unwanted Christmas decorations. Had some of these for years and don’t want them any more. Put these in the charity bag.

An electric back massager. Had this quite a few years ago, used it about 3 times, then it was stored away. Unfortunately during the storage the plug for it managed to get lost so it’s no good now. Have to put this in the bin because I don’t know if it would work even if I had a plug because it’s been unused for so long.

2 empty sweet tins, ashamed to say that we ate all these in 2 weeks over Christmas! I don’t need any more empty tins lying around the house and can’t think of any use for them, so I’ll offer them on Freecycle.

2 books that I won’t read. Going to the charity shop.

Christmas TV guide – put in paper recycling

5 pairs of earrings that I bought in Claire’s Accessories’ sale. I won’t use them so I’ll give them to the charity shop.

A shot glass with ā€˜Helen’ on it. I got this because I thought it would be a good idea for my daughter, but I don’t think she’d use it. Back to the charity shop it goes.

An out of date pack of rice cakes. Can’t think why I bought these in the first place, I don’t really like them and they had got lost at the back of a cupboard. I put them out on the lawn for the birds.

A pile of DVDs that we’ve finished with. In the charity shop bag.

A few more things gone today, and far more than 10 items because things like the DVDs, earrings, books, toiletries and Christmas decs I've only counted as 1 item each.

Various random old floppies, including a Logitech mouse driver for DOS and Windows.

The tapes are from my ZX81 and Acorn Electron days, including some of my own creations.

All gone to be crushed and buried or burnt as my local council waste disposal service at Grunty Fen see fit.

I didn't take it, honest.

There wasn't much to declutter, but I still made an attempt anyway.

Ten pairs of shoes from the family - only one from me and nine outgrown pairs from the girls. There are two more pairs in mind to go - D's winter boots which still fit for now but are completely worn out, and my favourite old casual runners. I need to replace them before I get rid of the current ones, which I'm still wearing even though they're significantly falling apart.

I didn't realize until this afternoon that I have 3 workbooks going on at once. Holy crap!

Also, do you like that I have a "Declutter your house" book? Perhaps I shouldn't clutter up the house with so many books.

Ya think?

It's the 24th day of my 30 Day Challenge, and I spent a few hours Dealing with the futon space in my library/guest room. For months now it's been in "bed" mode, overflowing with pillows, blankets, throw pillows, and even more pillows. And the storage bin underneath was a black hole of the unknown. Today I took it all apart, Donated most of the pillows, a lot of the blankets, some pillowcases, and the three (yes, 3!!!) shower curtains hiding underneath. Then I put 2 winter blankets in a blanket bag, added 1 medium weight fleece to the box, and flipped the futon into couch mode. Topped with just a few pillows and a couple throw blankets, it no longer overpowers the entire room.

(subtitled: one must declutter ~grin~)

when you get to be our age, you discover that you have acquired pieces of furniture, things useful and not-so-useful, and knicknacks that you can't quite give yourself permission to donate, sell, or consign to the trash. (keep in mind that i have been in this house for almost 18 years.) people that you love who are moving give you things; dear ones pass away and you take things of your childhood; you buy cool pieces (see the painted cabinet in the middle; it is already on a different wall :)

this is the "before" shot of the wall where the now-assembled wall unit has gone. the desk on the right will go onto craigslist because i have never used it as a desk and the bookcase on the left will go to donation, if i can get it into my car-- it was recycled harvard dorm furniture and is as heavy as all get out.

so as thoreau was fond of saying: "simplify, simplify, simplify"

(i am trying to ~grin~)

the theme was: 'What is the meaning of life?'

(boy, did i interpret that broadly ~grin~)

.

Various TV, movie and art posters, some from my university days 17 years ago. Also some University of Surrey branded engineering drawing paper, unused as the university upgraded to computer aided drawing the year I started. Free to a good home.

I am trying to declutter the garage and yesterday I sorted out a box of glassware that has been stored out there for years. (The newspaper that the stuff was wrapped in was dated 1994!)

Amongst the items was this tiny souvenir mug which my son brought back from one of his school trips. :)

After a bit of rearranging and throwing out some old plastic containers that I haven't used for years, I managed to find homes for all the glassware in the kitchen cupboard. I might now be able to use the plates and dishes and this little souvenir has been put in a safe place.

Decluttering of the dining table.... [Herenstraat, Tuinstad Staalwijk, Leiden, 4/30/2017]

From left to right the boxes would be labeled: put away, give away and throw away. The idea came from From Organized Home.com. Declutter 101:Strategies To Cut Clutter.

Andy K, Ocala home guide, with a tip for sellers - declutter, declutter, declutter!

A little dull perhaps - but I've been sorting through drawers recently - on an endless mission to declutter and there are always things to discover. This time I discovered a disk of 50 scanned old photos some of them more than 80 years old.

WHY Can't I think of doing these things straightaway like a normal person?

I mean, really. It was only 14 bux for the 2 stacking shelves, ElJay!!! It didn't break the bank. Doof.

I felt like society would never give me another chance because I had a violent criminal background. I made some terrible choices in my past, and I just didn’t know how to overcome those challenges when dealing with employers or society. It was difficult for me to find the resources to improve myself, my self-esteem as well as my confidence within myself. When I left prison, I knew it was going to be a journey — I just didn’t know where to start.

I found out about Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina’s program through the Darryl Hunt Project for Freedom and Justice. I took a week-long job readiness class. After the class, I started my job search, and it was 9-to-5 every day. I was on foot, of course, and I started at one end of a street and I finished on another.

Luckily, a job posting came open as a machine operator at Carolina Fabric four or five weeks after I finished the job readiness class. I obtained the job; it was only minimum wage at the time, but I went into the job with an attitude of gratitude.

In the past year and a half, I’ve been going to night school for welding, as I aspire to be certified welding inspector.

I would tell people looking for a job that you should never judge what you’ve done in the past. The first step is to forgive yourself — because if you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will.
