I suffered a debilitating back injury while working a warehouse job 15 years ago and was forced to leave. At the time, I was raising two daughters, and I was uncertain about what my future would look like.

My injury prevented me from doing any hard, physical work, and I wasn’t sure where I was going to work and earn a living.

I was referred to Goodwill Industries of Sacramento Valley and Northern Nevada by a counseling service and decided to register for computer classes. My computer skills improved a lot in a short period of time.

I decided to stay with Goodwill as a volunteer. I helped out in all different departments doing administrative work. I learned how to do a lot of different tasks and worked really hard to improve my skills.

After about six months, I started applying for jobs. I learned how to do accounts payable, and I really liked it. Goodwill recognized my hard work and dedication, and they hired me as an accounts payable clerk in February of 2001.

After over 12 years at Goodwill, I am happy and grateful that they gave me the opportunity to work. As a result of my injury, I had surgery in 2004 and was out for nine months. Goodwill kept my job open and welcomed me back with open arms. I feel great and happy, and I still learn something new every day. Twelve years ago, I would never have guessed that I would be doing this type of work.

I have learned that anyone that is given a chance and puts forth an effort can move forward. There are so many opportunities at Goodwill, and I am so happy to come to work every day.

I did it. I finally got everything out of my house that I had stored there. Except the bookcase. But maybe that can stay. Otherwise. Seriously done. It was such a strange journey to sort through years and years of papers and trinkets, stuff that I thought I needed so I put in a box on the shelf ages ago. It stirred many memories, some good, some bad. And the stuff was resorted into trash (I don't know whatv this is or why I have it), Goodwill (someone else may need this trinket that I no longer have an emotional attachemnt to), or rebox and store (this thing completes me and while I won't see it for another few years, I cannot live without it.)

I learned a lot about myself. I learned that I keep a lot of paper just like my Dad. I also figured out that because I keep things, other people like ot give me things they themselves don't want to throw away. I attract things. But I already have too many things. And I think I'm suffering from too-many-things-stress. I think it's really called clutter-stress. But it's real.

I am going to be a minimalist in my next life.

My lovely wife has started her own business!

She is the most organised person I know. Over the past few years she's enjoyed watching reality programmes based around hoarders, and she has come to realise that she wanted to help some of these folks. So, The Declutter Bug was born.

She will be fantastic at helping people organise their lives, whether it's decluttering of a garage or office, or a total house reorganisation.

I've made her a website, she's become registered with the APDO and she's started getting clients already.

I am very, very proud of her!

Played with some tilt/shift effects in post to help declutter the back and foreground.

Just a simple shot, showing off my new hair colour.

I did a step aerobics class this morning, then went to town and traded in a million old games and my game cube as part of my mission to declutter before I move. Now I'm going to lie on the sofa for the rest of the day :D I was going to go to the beach but it's raining :(

The drawer to the right of the stove. The whisk is in here because it's too big for the tool drawer.

Sally Charlton looked just divine in her bellydance outfit, as she performed in the bellydance soiree at Lithgow Ironfest, 2010.

Cropped from original RAW image and converted to greyscale in an attempt to "declutter" the background.... and obviously because b&w makes portraits so timeless!

Knitty suggested putting up command hooks, I decided to do it directly on the door. Good idea, knitty!

Well its a little over a year ago I first joined Flickr and I've absolutely LOVED the connections I've made here. I got a "bit" behind in my posting the last couple of months and have had to admit that catching up isn't possible - sometimes you have to let go of things you love to gain new memories.

In that vein I have been a Barbra Streisand fan since my brother gave me my very first record (Stoney End). That record has moved with me at least 45 times (which considering it is actually not a 45rpm is silly) in the years since - but it, and the other records of hers (and other artists) need to go as they haven't been played in years and are collecting dust.

Moving ahead with a joyous heart, open for new loves. (And yes, I'm staying on Flickr, and of course staying a Barbara Streisand fan, just starting clean this year ;)

I've wanted a new desk for quite some time, but really can't justify the expense when the table I was using is perfectly good, aside from just not fitting the small computer nook too well. Therefore, Darren and I looked around at what we could use to build a desk, and came up with this; two sheets of plywood fastened to two chunks of fence post with some very long wood screws leftover from an older project. We set it on two old nightstands. We keep thinking of ways to improve on the design, but all of them cost money, so I'll just try this one out for awhile...

Empty flat surfaces are my nemesis. Eventually things will reach a tipping point and I will declutter like a mother.

This is what we started out with. This dark and uninviting room.

Yes, it's a mess. It needs a good declutter. We need to paint this room and put the window treatments (panel curtains) back up. We also have bookshelves that need to fit in here somewhere.

Ms. Cheeky's Workshop Week 2 Extra Credit - Decluttering my DoF. My aperture setting for this photo was 5.6. This lense does go down to 4.0 but lower than 5.6 was resulting in a "fish-eye lense" look where a circle around the turtles head was in focus and everything else was blurred in a sort of circular pattern. Weird.

And I chose black and white because I think just about everything looks better in black and white. I also shot my other Week 2 assignment in black and white and love it much better than the one that I posted, but few people would understand the sheer genius of a black and white photo of a lemon and lime. I like to say they lack vision and creativity!

Yes, that's some Christian Dior eye shadow from a good few decades back!

in my grungy basement. Makes me want to declutter and paint. (I realize this is my third photo in four days of the same subject. Lately, it's all I've had time for, besides work and the normal boring household duties.)

It's day 10 of my 30 day "D" challenge, and a lot more than 1 thing went out today - once I got started I got on a roll and collected quite the pile for Donation. Here's the full list of items, and they're sitting on the drying racks from yesterday:

old desk chair (not pictured)

3 sets of towels

2 pairs of jeans that are too big

1 buckwheat pillow I never used

Ikea pop-up laundry hamper

2 rolls of shelf liner I'll never use

2 "flower" candle holders

1 tall jeweled candle holder

a couple DVDs

a couple stacks of empty DVD cases

a small spinning CD rack

a plant water spritzer thing

a purple fleece/leather blanket

an old-ish PC that's been cannibalized til there's nothing left but MB, CPU, and case

my lovely harrods baubles. my stepmother used to collect them, they only used to produce a certain amount of them a year, so were pretty exclusive. but then harrods started mass producing them for tourists and they weren't the same :-(

anyway, when she had a declutter, i inherited them. i'd like a purple and a green one too, at some point.

Spring is almost here! I took a break from crafty photography, and hunkered down for the winter with various projects. It also encouraged me to sift through my craft materials.

A few years ago, I was handed a grocery bag worth of buttons (I love it when crafters think of me when they declutter). Around the same time I went to a vintage fair and bought the chipmunk and bunny cards. I liked the buttons on them, but I was mostly drawn to the cute animals. These were probably old cards that the vender repurposed to make the buttons more distinctive? If so, it worked!

The buttons are mostly Domcord, Streamline, Tiffany and Lady Fashion.

I did a lot of thinking this winter about how to use up all these up. I have lots of ideas, but it will probably take me years.
