This ad hoc acoustic supergroup started around a table at a small pub in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Ry Cavanaugh, Billy Conway, Sean Staples, Dinty Child, Jim Fitting and other friends gathered to swap songs and stories. Their lively performances and inspired versions of tunes from the dusty backroads of America's past were such a hit with fans that they decided to take their musical conversation into the studio. The two-CD debut Tabletop People ups the ante with stellar appearances by folksinger Rose Polenzani, Twinemen's Laurie Sargent, Dennis Brennan, Asa Brebner, Merrie Amsterburg, Dan Kellar, Presidents of the United States' Chris Ballew, Jabe Beyer, Tim Gearon and other luminaries. And the 18 gritty, funny, soulful performances included span a gamut of emotions and tastes that should please both adult and younger listeners.

Session Americana sit tightly around a small cafe table, ambient mics tuned to catch the whole sound of the voices and instruments. A suit-case drum kit, an old electric bass, a bunch of acoustic instruments, a field organ: This format feels very theatrical and though the musicians face each other, the audience feels drawn into the circle by the warmth, joy and camaraderie that emanate outwards by the all star cast of characters seated around the table. What keeps you coming back show after show is the same thing that any audience member longs for, great songs performed by a great band. The six core members of the band have brought enviable careers worth of experience to the “table”, featuring (current and former) members of Treat Her Right, Patty Griffin, Lori McKenna, The The, Dennis Brennan, Kris Delmhorst. The group has grown from a rag tag jam at a local pub to a regional institution, playing gigs from church coee houses to urban nightclubs to regional festival tents to large halls.

The “Claiming A Street Named King” Project is the brainchild of Rev. Terence A. Dicks of Augusta, Georgia.

These photos depict homes, building and abandoned structures along Martin Lutheran King, Jr. Boulevard in Augusta, Georgia.

It began with research in Athens and Augusta (Georgia) through the University Of Georgia School Of Environmental Design.

Research was led by Dr. Mary Anne Akers in collaboration with Georgia Legal Services Program, Georgia State Trade Association of Non-profit Developers (G-STAND) and Neighborhood Works America, INC.

“Today, I am taking the next step on a lifetime path of change. Experience has taught me that sometimes change happens to you and sometimes you must make it happen. The one thing I do know is that I can not do it alone and that is why I'm here today to ask for your support.

“I am running for Congress because this country is on the wrong course in so many ways and we need change. I am here ready to lead that change.

“I'm running to change a policy of folly in Iraq. We have prosecuted a war without a strategy, exposed our servicemen and women to danger without adequate armor and equipment, and shuffled the wounded to medical facilities that are unsanitary and understaffed.

“I am the proud product of a military family. My father, an Air Force Colonel, survived the bombing of Pearl Harbor and devoted his entire career to military service. While growing up we lived on bases throughout the country and the world, including Germany and Japan. There I learned the values of service, self-reliance, and sacrifice. It was a time when America was respected around the globe. And it was also a time when our country welcomed its veterans with the GI

Bill, not the warehousing of wounded soldiers at Walter Reed. We must recapture that sense of gratitude to those who fight on our behalf. We need to end the war in Iraq, bring our courageous young men and women home quickly and safely and care for them once they're here. This is our moral obligation. In Congress, I will champion nothing less.

“I am running to make our country more secure. You know, my Dad used to say you don't know what a good defense is until you don't have it. Tragically, we learned that lesson on 9/11 and again when Hurricane Katrina showed how vulnerable and unprepared we were. We finally need to implement the recommendations of the 9/11 commission to strengthen our border security. And we need to invest in our first line of defense -- our police, firefighters, and emergency

response teams. In Congress, I will work to do just that.

“I am running to change an attitude of neglect that leaves 47 million Americans without basic health care, including oneout of every ten children in our country. I'm not a stranger to this issue. I understand the fear and helplessness so many feel when faced with an illness in their family. But I have also experienced the hope our health care system can offer and shudder to think what that experience might have been if our family had been uninsured. And as a leader on the board of a nonprofit health plan, I have seen the challenges and solutions of providing affordable, accessible health care. We need

health care coverage for every American and we need it now. In Washington, I will work to ensure just that.

“There are those who would ignore the need for change, regardless of the cost to future generations. I'm running because this administration is in denial on global warming, to our peril and its great shame. I will work to set limits on greenhouse gas emissions, hold polluters accountable, and make our district a leader in the development of alternative energy. We need to end our addiction to foreign oil. We need change on global warming. In Washington, I will lead this change--for your children and for mine.

“Our responsibility to our children extends to an education that equips them to compete in a global economy. As a leader at Middlesex Community College for the past 9 1/2 years, I have worked hard to advance public higher education.

Education is the key to American ingenuity and innovation and to a civil society. And there are few issues as vital to our economic future as developing a trained and educated workforce. I will be your champion for this most fundamental cause.

“And finally, I'm running to help continue the positive change that we've worked for so long here in the 5th District and which I know so well.

“When I first came to Lowell in the summer of 1967, I was a college student in love with the very handsome son of one of Lowell's immigrant families. I found a city and a region rich in so many ways-- rich in the nation's economic history, rich with newcomers who had settled here from all over the world, rich in beautiful architecture and the natural treasure of its rivers, and rich with deep ties built on family, neighborhood, and culture. I have spent 35 years living here, working here, experiencing some of life's most difficult times and many of its joys. Paul and I raised our three daughters, Ashley, Katina, and Molly, here. And I have relished the opportunity to live life with family members nearby and wonderful friends, so many of whom are here today.

“I may have lived in many places around the world but I never experienced the enduring community I found here. It has become the only hometown I've ever known.

“Throughout my life I have embraced change. In my first campaign, I traveled as a college student with Senator Eugene McCarthy throughout New Hampshire to help end the war in Vietnam. In all those endeavors and along this path I have learned first hand the power of public office. I know when put to great purpose how effectively it changes the course of a community, a nation, or a world. This possibility for change is our inspiration and hope: to address our most pressing problems, to strive for excellence, innovation and decency, to leave the world a better place, to change our future.

“So today I invite you to come with me on yet another journey of change. Change is the legacy of this remarkable 5th Congressional District. The American Revolution was born in Concord and the Industrial Revolution was sparked on the banks of the Merrimack in Lowell, Lawrence and Haverhill. I don't know how long Ron has been on the streets, but it is the only way he knows. I've known him for over a year and have never once seen him stand up. He is always lying down, on the concrete, with his headphones in his ears. More often than not all you can hear is static coming from his radio. I don't think he can even grasp his situation. But, then again, it's his life. And who am I to judge. I rarely hear the man complain and can count on one hand the number of times I've seen him upset. Each time we leave Ron, he prays for us. His words are beautiful. Maybe he knows more than we give him credit for. God may be all he has, but isn't God really all we need? Ron, you are truly a beautiful soul and you are so very loved.**

1975. Bell-bottoms, disco, seaweed wallpaper in shades of brown, hair, a lot of hair, afros on every- body and voluptuous sideburns, roller-skates, Led Zeppelin. Coffee and oil is very expensive. The first disposable razor. Ali beats Frazier in the “Thrilla in Manilla”, The King is alive and kicking in Vegas and the king of Sweden is yet to be married.

Despite an oil crisis and prolonged recession, 1975 was a carefree time with larger solutions to smaller problems. A dualistic era where the colourful visions from the 60’s still lived but popular culture interpreted those visions in darker Kodachromatic tones. It was decency and decadence. It was the birth of the peace- and environmentalist movements, amidst a full-blown cold war. Also, in 1975 a new paper is born – G-Print.

Since then, for 35 years, G-Print’s been loved for its overall quality and consistency by merchants and printers alike. And most importantly there’s been no significant changes in paper properties over all those years. This equals 35 years of perfection for a paper and a paper production process that is, “Impossible to copy”.

In this boxed DM, distributed to 20.000 paper clients all over Europe, Arctic Paper, the owner of G-Print, push the “Impossible to copy” message via an anachronistic box including mini examples of paper applications. A mini DM, a mini cookbook, a mini Magazine and a mini Poster and Map. All showcasing classics from 1975. Not very incidentally, just like G-Print.

Trump, release your tax returns by Andy Worthington

After the shock of Donald Trump’s inauguration day, when millions of Americans (and visiting foreigners like me) felt understandably distraught, bereft, dismayed, as the grotesque, narcissistic, predatory, corrupt fraud that is Donald Trump delivered a bleak and graceless inauguration speech, it was nothing short of a delight on Saturday, Jan. 21, Day 2 of the aberrant Trump presidency, when, across the country and around the world, millions of women (plus large numbers of supportive men) marched in protest against Trump and all he and his administration stand for — his disdain for women, his racism, his xenophobia, his adherence to intolerant white Christian fundamentalism, and, last but not least, his opaque, but very obviously corrupt business practices. This particular photo - although out of focus - highlights a particular problem with the new president : his refusal to publish his tax returns. Two US academics have estimated that between 3.3m and 4.6m people marched in total across the US, with New York’s turnout estimated at between 400,000 and 500,000 people.

Stepping out of Grand Central Station into a river of protest, with more clever, witty and insightful handmade posters than you could imagine, and with chants and cheers punctuating the general hubbub at regular intervals was to feel that perhaps this dystopian vision of America can indeed be overthrown before it wreaks untold havoc at home and abroad. And with no beginning or end of the protest in sight, it was easy to believe that the number marching was much larger than even the academics’ estimate.

It will take more than one day, of course, as the people of America need to unite like never before — everyone who didn’t vote for Trump, everyone threatened by Trump, everyone appalled by Trump, including, of course, those who voted for him but might already be having second thoughts. This could be a disastrous presidency, or it could be even worse than that, but people need to put aside any notions of complacency, and work out how to resist. This was a great start, and a historic moment that everyone there will remember, but now there needs to be much more action and organizing.

As you look at these photos, however, I hope they are a reminder of a day of hope across the US and around the world, when ordinary people demonstrated that fundamental decency will not be silenced, and that a tolerant, multi-racial society, featuring, at its heart, equality between women and men, and between people whatever their race, creed or color, has humour, intelligence and compassion that throw into even sharper relief how troublingly miserable, negative and ungenerous Donald Trump and his advisors are.

As well as being an author and columnist, Baroness Joan Bakewell is one of Britain’s most influential radio and television journalists. Her broadcasting career began in 1965 with Late Night Line-Up on BBC 2 television, and since then she has become highly regarded not only for her coverage of the arts but also for her programmes on subjects such as taste, decency, morality and censorship.

She has spoken out, lectured, broadcast, campaigned and written frequently about censorship, divorce, abortion, women’s rights, race and sexuality – but always in calm and measured tones. She’s one of my most favourite broadcasters, and I was delighted to encounter her last night in London when she delivered the James Cameron Memorial Lecture on ‘morality and the media’.

This ad hoc acoustic supergroup started around a table at a small pub in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Ry Cavanaugh, Billy Conway, Sean Staples, Dinty Child, Jim Fitting and other friends gathered to swap songs and stories. Their lively performances and inspired versions of tunes from the dusty backroads of America's past were such a hit with fans that they decided to take their musical conversation into the studio. The two-CD debut Tabletop People ups the ante with stellar appearances by folksinger Rose Polenzani, Twinemen's Laurie Sargent, Dennis Brennan, Asa Brebner, Merrie Amsterburg, Dan Kellar, Presidents of the United States' Chris Ballew, Jabe Beyer, Tim Gearon and other luminaries. Session Americana sit tightly around a small cafe table, ambient mics tuned to catch the whole sound of the voices and instruments. A suit-case drum kit, an old electric bass, a bunch of acoustic instruments, a field organ: This format feels very theatrical and though the musicians face each other, the audience feels drawn into the circle by the warmth, joy and camaraderie that emanate outwards by the all star cast of characters seated around the table. What keeps you coming back show after show is the same thing that any audience member longs for, great songs performed by a great band. The six core members of the band have brought enviable careers worth of experience to the “table”, featuring (current and former) members of Treat Her Right, Patty Griffin, Lori McKenna, The The, Dennis Brennan, Kris Delmhorst. Rural Free Delivery mail carrier Route No. 8, Plymouth, Indiana, message by Hoosier Recollections

1912 postmarked postcard photograph of the RFD (Rural Free Delivery) Route No. 8 mail carrier at Plymouth, Indiana. The carrier was posing in his horse-drawn vehicle for a photo that he used as a Christmas card for the patrons on his route. This copy was addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Eli Silvius.

The carrier didn’t identify himself, but an undated document at the Indiana Genealogy Trails website provides information about the Marshall County post offices. That document includes a list of the rural route carriers for Plymouth as of 1908 and identified Roller Kleckner as the carrier for Route No. 8. The postcard owner has also found additional documentation showing Mr. Kleckner was still the carrier on Route No. 8 in 1910. Although the carrier in this photograph was probably Mr. Kleckner, that remains to be confirmed.

Postmasters were political appointees in those days and, prior to Mr. Kleckner’s appointment, there was some controversy regarding the examination and employee selection process at Plymouth. In 1905, F. M. McCrory had resigned as a Plymouth rural route carrier. In a November 15, 1906, letter to the editor of the Plymouth Tribune newspaper, Mr. McCrory took issue with Postmaster Yockey’s handling of the selection process for the new RFD carrier for Route No. 8.

“I desire to call attention at this time to a condition existing in rural route matters, to make a few predictions and the dear people can figure out the balance. A year ago Oct. 1st I resigned as carrier on rural route No. 1 and an examination was held of applicants for the place at which the postmasters prospective son-in-law was given highest grade and the place from which I had resigned. Roller I. Kleckner won second place and Ora Jacox fifth place there being nine applicants. This year Mr. John Nye decided to withdraw from the service and purchased the restaurant of Mr. Cripe taking possession Oct. 10th. Mr. Kleckner wrote the department stating the facts, making formal demand for his rightful place.

“At this time another letter was sent the department stating the facts more fully than Mr. Kleckner felt warranted in doing and reply was received that ‘there was no vacancy on route No. 8 and as soon as a vacancy occurred, if the Civil Service Commission recommended Mr. Kleckner, he would be appointed at once.’

“Now instead of sending his resignation to the department, Mr. Nye placed it in the hands of Mr. Yockey, who held it up until the department was notified by outsiders and demanded it at once, and it was sent in about Oct. 17, so we are credibly informed. Now why all this jockeying? First Mr. Kleckner is a Democrat. Second the mother and brother of Mr. Jacox we are informed are sureties on Mr. Yockey's bond and Mr. Yockey asked' permission for Mr. Jacox to drive the route from Oct. 10 on instead of sending in the resignation of Mr. Nye and asking that his successor be appointed at once. A notice is pasted in the lobby of the postoffice for examination for rural route carriers, since the commissions of those examined a year ago expire Nov. 16. Now we predict Mr. Jacox will be given first place and the route, at once after the examination, for which we will wait and see. Now let us moralize a little. When those men took that competitive examination a year ago Mr. Jacox virtually agreed to take his place according to what he won. If he entered into such machinations as above stated, is he the party the people on route 8 desire to trust to carry their mail? What do you think of a postmaster who will be a party to such scullduggery which amounts almost to a crime. My dear people this is the class of political scavengers and their methods against which Mr. Hendricks and his friends have waged war during the past ten months and will continue, if they so continue, for the next ten years. People who will lend themselves to such work would enter an orphan asylum and rob the baby of its nursing bottle and jaw the nurse for having allowed it to drink some of the milk. Nothing remains of h6nor and common decency but the grinning skeleton and they envy even that the little space it occupies. F. M. McCrory.

Fulbright rejected the notion that "force is the ultimate proof of superiority - that when a nation shows it has a stronger army, it is also proving that it has beter people, better institutions, better principles, and, in general, a better civilization."

In nations as in individuals, he wrote, "bellicosity is a mark of weakness and self-doubt rather than of strength and self-assurance," adding that "the true mark of greatness is not stridency but magnanimity."

Cruel America, Jonathan Schell

There have been many signs recently that the United States has been traveling down a steepening path of cruelty.

It’s hard to say why such a thing is occurring, but it seems to have to do with a steadily growing faith in force as the solution to almost any problem, whether at home or abroad.

Enthusiasm for killing is an unmistakable symptom of cruelty. It also appeared after the killing of Osama bin Laden, which touched off raucous celebrations around the country. It is one thing to believe in the unfortunate necessity of killing someone, another to revel in it. This is especially disturbing when it is not only government officials but ordinary people who engage in the effusions.

In any descent into barbarism, one can make out two stages. First, the evils are inaugurated—tested, as it were. Second, the reaction comes—either indignation and rejection or else acceptance, even delight. The choice can indicate the difference between a country that is restoring decency and one that is sinking into a nightmare. It was a dark day for the United States when the Bush administration secretly ordered the torture of terrorism suspects. On that day, the civilization of the United States dropped down a notch. But it sank a notch lower when, the facts of the crimes having become known, former President Bush and former Vice President Cheney publicly embraced their wrongdoing, as they have done most recently on their respective book tours. To the impunity they already enjoyed, they added brazenness, as if challenging society to respond or else enter into tacit complicity with the abuses.

. . . The cruelty of a society cannot be quantified any more than its reserves of decency can. Nor can either be legislated, though both can be manifested in legislation. For all that, there can be no doubt that basic decisions are silently made in the hearts and minds of millions that are prior to any laws, and probably more important. If they go one way, a movement of hundreds of thousands suddenly arises, seemingly out of nowhere, to protest a wrongful execution. When they go the other way, you wake up one day to hear, with a chill running down your spine, a room full of people cheering because several hundred of their fellow citizens have been killed.
