Session Americana sit tightly around a small cafe table, ambient mics tuned to catch the whole sound of the voices and instruments. A suit-case drum kit, an old electric bass, a bunch of acoustic instruments, a field organ: This format feels very theatrical and though the musicians face each other, the audience feels drawn into the circle by the warmth, joy and camaraderie that emanate outwards by the all star cast of characters seated around the table. What keeps you coming back show after show is the same thing that any audience member longs for, great songs performed by a great band. This caught me by surprise especially as I should have been aware that these facilities existed having gone to school in Leeson Street and college in Kevin Street. There are two separate entities - a small park and an underground public toilet.
When I saw it today I thought that it was an old monument or memorial but upon seeing the entrance I realised that it was an underground public toilet block.
In the 1950s and 1960s there were about seventy public toilets in Dublin but all of them have been closed.
The underground public toilet block at the junction of Kevin Street and New Street was one of a number that were built in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century in response to an increasing demand for public facilities in the city. Underground facilities such as this were partially hidden from general view in order to satisfy Victorian perceptions of decency. It retains many of its historic features including railings, gates and decorative ventilation shaft.
Sheriff Michael J. Ashe, Jr. holds a Bachelor’s degree from St. Anselm’s College and a Master’s degree in Social Work from Boston College.
After graduate school, he and his wife Barbara served as the first house parents of Downey Side Homes for Youth.
Sheriff Ashe also served as Downey Side’s first assistant director.
He was elected Sheriff of Hampden County in 1974. He has been re-elected five times since, without opposition.
Sheriff Ashe’s motto of supervision is: “Strength Reinforced With Decency; Firmness Dignified With Fairness.”
Sheriff Ashe strongly believes that the inmate who desires to build a law-abiding life should be challenged with the tools and directions to do so, and that this should take place in a safe, secure, orderly, demanding and humane environment.
Among the operations at Hampden County that Sheriff Ashe is most proud of are the nation’s first Day Reporting Center, started in 1986, which successfully and safely supervises inmates living at home at the end of their sentence, and which has been replicated throughout the country; an inmate education program that has graduated over 3500 GED high school equivalency diploma recipients; a prison industry program, York Street Industries, which runs in the black; an inmate community service restitution program which has contributed over 1,000,000 hours of service to Hampden County communities; the nation’s first After Incarceration Support Systems program to assist inmates during the critical time of community re-entry; and a medical department which has developed a new paradigm for correctional medicine in its linkage to community-based health centers, and which was selected in 1998 as the facility of the year by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care.
Sheriff Ashe has a “40 hour work week” policy for sentenced inmates, resulting in their averaging over 40 hours of work or other productive activities each week. Sheriff Ashe believes that those incarcerated at his facility should “answer the bell” for a productive day each morning, just like the taxpayers who pay for their incarceration do, and just like they will have to do to lead productive law-abiding lives when they are released.
The Hampden County Sheriff’s Department community corrections program is the subject of an entire chapter of the book “Sensible Justice” by Daniel C. Anderson.
In 1996, the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department became the first county correctional department in the nation to be awarded four (4) separate accreditations from the American Correctional Association for four different levels of security.
In February of 1990, Sheriff Ashe commandeered a National Guard armory as a temporary correctional facility because of lack of room for sentenced inmates, which the Boston Herald called “a smart, gutsy move.”
Time Magazine said of Sheriff Ashe: “Sheriff Ashe, an unassuming…man with a reputation for using common sense…highly regarded for his frank and even manner.”
Sheriff Ashe is a past president of the Massachusetts Sheriffs Association. He has received, among other awards, the Howard B.Gill Lifetime Achievement Award from the Correctional Association of Massachusetts for “outstanding commitment to the field of criminal justice” and his “sense of justice, his firmness balanced with kindness, and the courage to take chances”; the Annual President’s Award of the Massachusetts Sheriffs Association, “in recognition of courageous actions on behalf of the citizens of Hampden County”; and the Beverly Ross Fliegel Public Service Memorial Award for “bringing a clear vision of social justice to the criminal justice system.”
Mike and Barbara Ashe are the parents of six and the grandparents of eleven.
This Red Fox Sparrow has been at the Poppoff sparrow patch since at least mid-November when I took this lousy photo with my point-and-shoot camera at 5:14 p.m. in little light. I don't recall what day I first saw it. I saw it there yesterday when I hauled in seed. In sunlight it's striking. Jim Cummins and I have exchanged photos of it, and Jim submitted checklists to eBird, after having respected eBird reviewers look at his photos of it and confirm that it was indeed a "Red" Fox Sparrow. They're labeled rare by eBird, and justly so. Jim's eBird reports triggered Rare Bird Alerts that went out to all who are subscribed to such for Yakima County. So this "Red" Fox Sparrow is not a secret to avid bird listers here, and there's no mystery who first reported it. When a rare bird shows up on eBird's range map, that indicates it has been "Confirmed" -- deemed an accurate and valid identification.

If you click on the hotspot link for the Poppoff sparrow patch (located just above the words "Union Gap") You'll see two checklists from Jim Cummins. That indicates his sightings of the Red Fox Sparrow there were "Confirmed".
For those who chase rare birds, this kind of search is commonplace. For those who are charged with compiling county records for submission to Washington Birder, this basic exercise is part of what's needed to submit complete and accurate data. For those who would like to see their name in lights for "finding" a rare bird, it would be wise to do such a search, and maybe look at Rare Bird Alerts in their email inbox, and maybe consider ethics before claiming a rare bird find, or accepting, even tacitly, other's crediting or applauding them. Before I learned how to use eBird, I once excitedly reported the first Osprey I'd seen for the year, thinking it was the first here that year. I remember a subsequent post by Jeff Kozma on BirdYak politely mentioning that he'd seen one, or maybe several, at an earlier date that spring. I apologized. I don't remember posting an apology, but if I didn't, wish I had. (That was back before Denny blocked me from receiving or sending BragYak posts.) I learned way back then that while I'll still be excited by my first of season sightings, I shouldn't assume that no one else had already seen them. Lots of people drive along I-82 & see returning Ospreys, and Ospreys winter over. Lots of people walk on the Greenway Path and see sparrows. When there are eBird reports like Jeff's or Jim's, it's quite easy to find out.
Recently I heard that Eric, an avid lister here, said at the Yakima CBC last Saturday that he'd found a Red Fox Sparrow at the Poppoff Sparrow Patch. His checklist notes it as "continuing". Denny, also an avid lister here, has been giving Eric credit for his find. While it's great that Denny is sometimes willing to give credit for someone else's rare find, it would be better if he took the care to actually give credit where it's due, especially Denny's actions corrupt data. When someone congratulates you for a find that's not yours, you should correct them. When they credit you for a find that's not yours, you should correct them. Maybe, this time, Eric will do that. If so, maybe Denny will accept that. Denny could also easily look at another lister's report December 12th of the "continuing" Red Fox Sparrow, earlier than Eric's. Or earlier still, here's that link to Jim's checklist on December 6, 2017:

Jim is an excellent birder. I greatly admire how he carries himself around birds. When approaching me birding, he never flushes the birds. He never boasts nor uses multiple exclamation points. He doesn't yank eBird reviewers' chains by writing in his eBird descriptions, "photos" without actually providing the photos. He is humble, and he is truthful. He is a superb role model in his field craft, humility, and decency.
This Red Fox Sparrow being at the Poppoff sparrow patch is really neat to see, and there are lots of Sooty and intermediate and indeterminate Fox Sparrows right there to compare it to. While it should be taken on its own, if anyone is to receive credit for the find, I think it should be Jim, since he worked at its identification, and submitted checklists, and his identification of this rare bird was confirmed.
I know of people who don't submit checklists -- so rare birds don't get harassed and to stay out of competition with unethical birders, and of others who like looking at birds and aren't into submitting checklists. Certainly several of them could have "found" it before us.
On the other hand, maybe I could submit a checklist for Nori. She was with Mary & me when I took this photo. Nori is a dog, so I bet she saw it before I did:

Acknowledging and correcting the mistaken attribution and tacit complicity would be much better than doing nothing, or than making some quick switches and pretending the simple mistake and acceptance of credit didn't happen. Let's not have another Cooper's/Sharpie sleight-of-pic, nor Ross's Goose sighting not seen.
People write posts & eBird descriptions that include phases like "continuing Harris's Sparrow" and "continuing Red Fox Sparrow". Several notches above BirdYak is Tweeters, a listserv for birders in Washington State, where I've even read posts in which people explain that they are not due the credit given them. It's really simple, and painless, and helpfully truthful.
Good birding -- Enjoying observing birds, and trying to give eBird and Washington Birder accurate data.
Please always consider the sensitivity of birds, nearby humans, and the environment.
Don't pish or use playback on rare or sensitive birds or in heavily birded areas.

"Justice for Ana Romero Petition
The recent tragic death of Ana Romero while in the Franklin County, Kentucky jail raises many questions of morality, decency, and the humane treatment of persons awaiting deportation. Ana Romero (44 years old) was living and working in Shelbyville cleaning houses in order to support her 84 year-old mother and two grown sons in college in El Salvador.
In January of 2008, Ana was arrested at home and detained for possessing a false immigration document and for failure to obey a deportation order. Ana's arrest was one small part of the massive national campaign by ICE (immigration and Customs Enforcement) which has included huge raids, unnecessary and excessively harsh criminal prosecutions, sweeping violations of due process rights, and an unprecedented increase in deportations. The most infamous examples of this have been the roundly denounced large-scale raids in Pottsville, Iowa, New Bedford, Massachusetts, and Laurel, Mississippi. These operations have torn families apart, including many U.S. citizens, and has instilled pervasive fear in our communities owing to the terrorizing tactics used by the authorities and the lack of due process afforded the immigrants afterwards.
Whether or not you agree with the criminalization of immigrant workers and families who have entered the U.S. without documents, the consequences of the Ana Romero case should touch a nerve. During her nearly 8 month imprisonment in the county jail while awaiting deportation, Ana was distraught and suffered from medical ailments, refusing to eat the food which she told family members"...stinks and there is something wrong with it."

Female Orange-barred Sulphur (female yellow-orange morph; Phoebis philea) - Suburban Merrit Island Florida
Dah Wife was out peein' dah dawg when she spotted this guy next to our house and called me on her cell. I told her I was in my PJs, but she said, "No matter, come out immediately!". Pretty unusual for Dah Wife to allow me to run around the neighborhood in my PJs, but given her blessing I was out the door (P&S in hand) in a minute!
It hovered over a flowering bush in our side yard, but then flew over our immediate neighbors roof, and down the block 3 houses. And off I went hustling through back yards in the chase until I found it feeding on this hibiscus under the window on the side of a house. Lucky for me (and the neighbor), they had their blinds down, and I was able to creep up for this feeding capture in full sun.
Still waiting for the decency police to show up at the front door.
So far so good . . .
Update 12/22/14:
There are two forms of the female with one off-white and the other yellow-orange in color. Both are much larger than the males with wingspans approaching 4 inches (10 cm). Both also have a submarginal row of broken, angled black smudges on the upperside of forewing (which I believe are opposite the angled brownish smudges seen on the underwing side in this capture). The outer half (trailing edge) of the hindwing of the yellow form is red-orange as was the case with this individual.
Considering the above description the individual in this post was the darker yellow-orange female morph with a bright reddish orange trailing edge on the top side of the rear wing.

The “Claiming A Street Named King” Project is the brainchild of Rev. Terence A. Dicks of Augusta, Georgia.
These photos depict homes, building and abandoned structures along Martin Lutheran King, Jr. Boulevard in Augusta, Georgia.
It began with research in Athens and Augusta (Georgia) through the University Of Georgia School Of Environmental Design.
Research was led by Dr. Mary Anne Akers in collaboration with Georgia Legal Services Program, Georgia State Trade Association of Non-profit Developers (G-STAND) and Neighborhood Works America, INC.

Despite signs at the ferry terminal pointing to a taxi stand and bus stop, this part of Miyajima Island seemed to be a vehicle free zone so the many Sika deer roam about freely all over the place. They are considered sacred on this island. (see previous pictures earlier in this album for notes about that and also the misgivings some folk have about the ethics of letting these animals roam freely, depending mostly on handouts from tourists and not having a natural diet of greenery). A quick word about the people you see in this picture: to the right, just after the deer is a group of Japanese schoolgirls. At the top far left are four US Marines, one of them bare chested. They drew much squeals of delight from the girls and several of them wanted to pose with the bare chested man. Calls of 'you are so cool' and much giggles and laughter rang out from the girls. Mercifully, his friends had a bit more decency and soon pulled him away from the schoolgirls squealing with delight and dragged him into a Starbucks coffee station just opposite. And the bare chested guy quickly put on a t-shirt he was carrying before entering the coffee shop. Laughter and jokes aside, I wonder what kind of impression that would have left on the minds of these young adolescent schoolgirls. (Hiroshima,Japan, Apr/ May 2019)

1975. Bell-bottoms, disco, seaweed wallpaper in shades of brown, hair, a lot of hair, afros on every- body and voluptuous sideburns, roller-skates, Led Zeppelin. Coffee and oil is very expensive. The first disposable razor. Ali beats Frazier in the “Thrilla in Manilla”, The King is alive and kicking in Vegas and the king of Sweden is yet to be married. Gerald Ford is president in the USA, Brezhnev in the USSR. It’s the year when General Franco dies and Angelina Jolie and Tiger Woods are born.
Despite an oil crisis and prolonged recession, 1975 was a carefree time with more solutions than problems. A dualistic era where the colourful visions from the 60’s still lived but popular culture interpreted those visions in darker Kodachromatic tones. It was decency and decadence. It was the birth of the peace- and environmentalist movements, amidst a full-blown cold war.
Also, in 1975 a new paper is born – G-Print.
Since then, for 35 years, G-Print’s been loved for its overall quality and consistency by merchants and printers alike. And most importantly there’s been no significant changes in paper properties over all those years. This equals 35 years of perfection for a paper and a paper production process that is, “Impossible to copy”.

This ad hoc acoustic supergroup started around a table at a small pub in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Ry Cavanaugh, Billy Conway, Sean Staples, Dinty Child, Jim Fitting and other friends gathered to swap songs and stories. Their lively performances and inspired versions of tunes from the dusty backroads of America's past were such a hit with fans that they decided to take their musical conversation into the studio. The two-CD debut Tabletop People ups the ante with stellar appearances by folksinger Rose Polenzani, Twinemen's Laurie Sargent, Dennis Brennan, Asa Brebner, Merrie Amsterburg, Dan Kellar, Presidents of the United States' Chris Ballew, Jabe Beyer, Tim Gearon and other luminaries. And the 18 gritty, funny, soulful performances included span a gamut of emotions and tastes that should please both adult and younger listeners.

Session Americana sit tightly around a small cafe table, ambient mics tuned to catch the whole sound of the voices and instruments. A suit-case drum kit, an old electric bass, a bunch of acoustic instruments, a field organ: This format feels very theatrical and though the musicians face each other, the audience feels drawn into the circle by the warmth, joy and camaraderie that emanate outwards by the all star cast of characters seated around the table. What keeps you coming back show after show is the same thing that any audience member longs for, great songs performed by a great band. The six core members of the band have brought enviable careers worth of experience to the “table”, featuring (current and former) members of Treat Her Right, Patty Griffin, Lori McKenna, The The, Dennis Brennan, Kris Delmhorst. The group has grown from a rag tag jam at a local pub to a regional institution, playing gigs from church coee houses to urban nightclubs to regional festival tents to large halls.

I actually don't know that she is a Southern girl. I went down to South Carolina last Sunday, and stopped by the Anderson Jockey Lot Flea Market. It's maybe four times as big as the Webb Road Flea Market, over near Salisbury, North Carolina, and that flea market seems big. However, the day was hot, and many of the booths were empty. They say they have 2000 booths, but I'd bet there weren't 500 occupied.
No one had any photos, except perhaps for some reproduction photos of Dale Earnhardt. I stopped at all the used book stalls, asking if they had found any photos in the books. Finally, one dealer said yes, he had seen a photo in a book---it was in a book called (something like) "How To Fly Your Own Airplane." He hunted around for five minutes looking for the book. Finally he found it, and there was the photo.
"Here, you can have this," he said.
On such small neighborly decency my faith in humanity is renewed, again and again. It's not a bad photo, but the getting of it was a treasure.

Finland hosts the 11th Arctic Council Ministerial Meeting on 7 May in Rovaniemi. Minister-level representatives from the eight Arctic States will convene to review and approve work completed under the two-year Finnish Chairmanship to improve sustainable development and environmental protection in the Arctic.

Their lively performances and inspired versions of tunes from the dusty backroads of America's past were such a hit with fans that they decided to take their musical conversation into the studio. The two-CD debut Tabletop People ups the ante with stellar appearances by folksinger Rose Polenzani, Twinemen's Laurie Sargent, Dennis Brennan, Asa Brebner, Merrie Amsterburg, Dan Kellar, Presidents of the United States' Chris Ballew, Jabe Beyer, Tim Gearon and other luminaries. And the 18 gritty, funny, soulful performances included span a gamut of emotions and tastes that should please both adult and younger listeners.

Session Americana sit tightly around a small cafe table, ambient mics tuned to catch the whole sound of the voices and instruments. A suit-case drum kit, an old electric bass, a bunch of acoustic instruments, a field organ: This format feels very theatrical and though the musicians face each other, the audience feels drawn into the circle by the warmth, joy and camaraderie that emanate outwards by the all star cast of characters seated around the table. What keeps you coming back show after show is the same thing that any audience member longs for, great songs performed by a great band. The six core members of the band have brought enviable careers worth of experience to the “table”, featuring (current and former) members of Treat Her Right, Patty Griffin, Lori McKenna, The The, Dennis Brennan, Kris Delmhorst. The group has grown from a rag tag jam at a local pub to a regional institution, playing gigs from church coee houses to urban nightclubs to regional festival tents to large halls.

Beautiful French actress Brigitte Bardot (1934) was the sex kitten of the European film industry. BB starred in 48 films, performed in numerous musical shows, and recorded 80 songs. After her retirement in 1973, she established herself as an animal rights activist and made vegetarianism sexy.
Brigitte Bardot was born in Paris in 1934. Her father, Louis Bardot, had an engineering degree and worked with his father in the family business. Her mother, Ann-Marie Mucel, was 14 years younger than Brigitte's father and they married in 1933. Brigitte's mother encouraged her daughter to take up music and dance. At the age of 13, she entered the Conservatoire Nationale de Danse to study ballet. By the time she was 15, Brigitte was trying a modelling career and found herself in May 1949 on the cover of the French magazine Elle. Her incredible beauty was readily apparent, Brigitte was noticed by Roger Vadim, then an assistant to the film director Marc Allegrét. Vadim was infatuated with Bardot and encouraged her to start working as a film actress. BB was 18 when she debuted in the comedy Le Trou Normand/Crazy for Love (Jean Boyer, 1952). In the same year, she married Vadim. Brigitte wanted to marry him when she was 17, but her parents quashed any marriage plans until she turned 18. In April 1953 she attended the Cannes Film Festival where she received massive media attention. She soon was every man's idea of the girl he'd like to meet in Paris. From 1952 to 1956 she appeared in seventeen films. Her films were generally lightweight romantic dramas in which she was cast as an ingénue or siren, often with an element of undress. In 1953, she made her first US production, Un acte d'amour/Act of Love (Anatole Litvak, 1953) with Kirk Douglas, but she continued to make films in France.
Roger Vadim was not content with the light fare his wife was offered. He felt Brigitte Bardot was being undersold. Looking for something more like an art film to push her as a serious actress, he showcased her in Et Dieu créa la femme/...And God Created Woman (Roger Vadim, 1956). This film, about an immoral teenager in a respectable small-town setting, was a smash success on both sides of the Atlantic. Craig Butler at AllMovie: "It's easy enough to say that ...And God Created Woman is much more important for its historical significance than for its actual quality as a film, and that's true to an extent. Woman's immense popularity, due to its willingness to directly embrace an exploration of sex as well as its willingness to show a degree of nudity that was remarkably daring for its day, demonstrated that audiences were willing to view subject matter that was considered too racy for the average moviegoer. This had both positive (freedom to explore, especially for the French filmmakers of the time) and negative (freedom to exploit) consequences, but its impact is undeniable. It's also true that Woman is not a great work of art, not with a story that is ultimately rather thin, some painful dialogue, and an attitude toward its characters and their sexuality that is unclear and inconsistent. Yet Woman is still fascinating, due in no small part to the presence of Brigitte Bardot in the role that made her an international star and sex symbol. She's not demonstrating great acting here, although her performance is actually good and much better than necessary, and her legendary mambo scene at the climax is nothing short of sensational." During the shooting of Et Dieu créa la femme/And God Created Woman (1956), directed by her husband Roger Vadim, Brigitte Bardot had an affair with her co-star Jean-Louis Trintignant, who at that time was married to French actress Stéphane Audran. Her divorce from Vadim followed, but they remained friends and collaborated in later work.
Et Dieu créa la femme/...And God Created Woman (Roger Vadim, 1956) helped her international status. The film took the USA by storm, her explosive sexuality being unlike anything seen in the States since the days of the 'flapper' in the 1920s. It gave rise to the phrase 'sex kitten' and fascination of her in America consisted of magazine photographs and dubbed over French films - good, bad or indifferent, her films drew audiences - mainly men - into theatres like lemmings.BB appeared in light comedies like Doctor at Large (Ralph Thomas, 1957) - the third of the British 'Doctor' series starring Dirk Bogarde - and Une Parisienne/La Parisienne (Michel Boisrond, 1957) which suited her acting skills best. However, she was a sensation in the crime drama En cas de malheur/Love is My Profession (Claude Autant-Lara, 1958). Hal Erickson at AllMovie: "This Brigitte Bardot vehicle ran into stiff opposition from the Catholic Legion of Decency, severely limiting its U.S. distribution. Bardot plays a nubile small-time thief named Yvette, who becomes the mistress of influential defence attorney Andre (Jean Gabin). Though Andre is able to shower Yvette with jewels and furs, he cannot "buy" her heart, and thus it is that it belongs to handsome young student Mazzetti (Franco Interlenghi). Alas, Yvette is no judge of human nature: attractive though Mazzetti can be, he has a dangerous-and deadly-side. En Cas de Malheur contains a nude scene that has since been reprinted in freeze-frame form innumerable times by both film-history books and girlie magazines." Photographer Sam Lévin's photos contributed considerably to her image of sensuality and slight immorality. One of Lévin's pictures shows Brigitte, dressed in a white corset. It is said that around 1960 postcards with this photograph outsold in Paris those of the Eiffel Tower.
Brigitte Bardot divorced Vadim in 1957 and in 1959 she married actor Jacques Charrier, with whom she starred in Babette s'en va-t-en guerre/Babette Goes to War (Christian-Jaque, 1959). The paparazzi preyed upon her marriage, while she and her husband clashed over the direction of her career. Her films became more substantial, but this brought a heavy pressure of dual celebrity as she sought critical acclaim while remaining a glamour model for most of the world. Vie privée/Private Life (1962), directed by Louis Malle has more than an element of autobiography in it. James Travers at French Films: "Brigitte Bardot hadn’t quite reached the highpoint of her career when she agreed to make this film with high profile New Wave film director Louis Malle. Even so, the pressure of being a living icon was obviously beginning to get to France’s sex goddess and Vie privée is as much an attempt by Bardot to come to terms with her celebrity as anything else. Malle is clearly fascinated by Bardot and the documentary approach he adopts for this film reinforces the impression that it is more a biography of the actress than a work of fiction. Of course it’s not entirely biographical, but the story is remarkably close to Bardot’s own life and comes pretty close to predicting how her career would end." The scene in which, returning to her apartment, Bardot's character is harangued in the elevator by a middle-aged cleaning lady calling her offensive names, was based on an actual incident, and is a resonant image of celebrity in the mid-20th century. Soon afterwards Bardot withdrew to the seclusion of Southern France.
Brigitte Bardot's other husbands were German millionaire playboy Gunter Sachs and right-wing politician Bernard d'Ormale. She is reputed to have had relationships with many other men including Sami Frey, her co-star in La Vérité/The Truth (Henri-Georges Clouzot, 1960), and musicians Serge Gainsbourg and Sacha Distel. In 1963, Brigitte Bardot starred in Godard's critically acclaimed film Le Mépris/Contempt (Jean-Luc Godard, 1963). She was also featured along with such notable actors as Alain Delon in Amours célèbres/Famous Love Affairs (Michel Boisrond, 1961) and Histoires extraordinaires/Tales of Mystery (Louis Malle, 1968), Jeanne Moreau in Viva Maria! (Louis Malle, 1965), Sean Connery in Shalako (Edward Dmytryk, 1968), and Claudia Cardinale in Les Pétroleuses/Petroleum Girls (Christian-Jaque, 1971). She participated in various musical shows and recorded many popular songs in the 1960s and 1970s, mostly in collaboration with Serge Gainsbourg, Bob Zagury and Sacha Distel, including 'Harley Davidson', 'Le Soleil De Ma Vie' (the cover of Stevie Wonder's 'You Are the Sunshine of My Life') and the notorious 'Je t'aime... moi non plus'.
Brigitte Bardot’s film career showed a steady decline in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In 1973 just before her fortieth birthday, she announced her retirement. She chose to use her fame to promote animal rights. In 1976 she established the Brigitte Bardot Foundation for the Welfare and Protection of Animals. She became a vegetarian and raised three million French francs to fund the foundation by auctioning off jewellery and many personal belongings. For this work, she was awarded the Légion d’honneur in 1984. During the 1990s she became also outspoken in her criticism of immigration, interracial relationships, Islam in France and homosexuality. Her husband Bernard d'Ormal is a former adviser of the far-right Front National party. Bardot has been convicted five times for 'inciting racial hatred'. More fun is that Bardot is recognised for popularising bikini swimwear, in such early films as Manina/Woman without a Veil (1952), in her appearances at Cannes and in many photo shoots. Bardot also brought into fashion the 'choucroute' ('Sauerkraut') hairstyle (a sort of beehive hairstyle) and gingham clothes after wearing a checkered pink dress, designed by Jacques Esterel, at her wedding to Charrier. The fashions of the 1960s looked effortlessly right and spontaneous on her. Time Magazine: "She is the princess of pout, the countess of come hither. Brigitte Bardot exuded a carefree, naïve sexuality that brought a whole new audience to French films."

These photos depict homes, building and abandoned structures along Martin Lutheran King, Jr. Boulevard in Augusta, Georgia.
It began with research in Athens and Augusta (Georgia) through the University Of Georgia School Of Environmental Design.
Research was led by Dr. Mary Anne Akers in collaboration with Georgia Legal Services Program, Georgia State Trade Association of Non-profit Developers (G-STAND) and Neighborhood Works America, INC.

EDIT - After vomiting three times in one night and suffering severe heartburn which led me to the Korean ER, I am no longer, ever eating McDonald's french fries again. Instant karma got me, I guess! Also, I think I already lost 2 lbs. in just one week from not eating the things.
So, McDonald's has become part of my life again in Korea. Back in Portland, I'd go to McDonald's and get french fries maybe once every year and a half and always feel immensely guilty about it afterwards, because McDonald's french fries are not actually vegan or even vegetarian. That's right - because of a small amount of natural flavor which I believe has beef fat in it, McDonald's french fries don't even have the decency to be vegetarian.
Now I'm a vegan and I've been a vegan since 2003. Some people (many people in fact) would say that after what I just said I'm not, in fact, a vegan. And back in Portland, hell, I didn't feel great about the occasional french fry breakdown - there was really no excuse what with all the vegan fried food lurking about the place.
But here, in Korea, where the one vegetarian restaurant in my neighborhood closes at 9 p.m. every night and many worknights I don't get home til after 10 - I say I'm a motherfucking vegan even though my french fry consumption has gone up considerably.
They're really horrible for me, and yes, I've seen Super Size Me, but would you want to cook if you finished work at 10 p.m. and you lived in a tiny apartment with one burner on the stove and about 1/5 the counter space of the average American kitchen and you're a vegan so you can't just buy soup and throw it in a pot and heat it up? Well, would you?
Hence, McDonald's french fries. I'll probably wean off them again after intensive classes are over in February but for now, god help me, "I'm lovin' it." And yeah, that's their slogan in Korea too.
