Inverewe Gardens. It drizzled Scottish sunshine the whole time. The sandflies (midges) loved it. Nasty secretive things that you don't notice until they bite. Not like their kiwi cousins who at least have the decency to advertise their presence.

"Justice for Ana Romero Petition
The recent tragic death of Ana Romero while in the Franklin County, Kentucky jail raises many questions of morality, decency, and the humane treatment of persons awaiting deportation. Ana Romero (44 years old) was living and working in Shelbyville cleaning houses in order to support her 84 year-old mother and two grown sons in college in El Salvador.
In January of 2008, Ana was arrested at home and detained for possessing a false immigration document and for failure to obey a deportation order. Ana's arrest was one small part of the massive national campaign by ICE (immigration and Customs Enforcement) which has included huge raids, unnecessary and excessively harsh criminal prosecutions, sweeping violations of due process rights, and an unprecedented increase in deportations. The most infamous examples of this have been the roundly denounced large-scale raids in Pottsville, Iowa, New Bedford, Massachusetts, and Laurel, Mississippi. These operations have torn families apart, including many U.S. citizens, and has instilled pervasive fear in our communities owing to the terrorizing tactics used by the authorities and the lack of due process afforded the immigrants afterwards.
Whether or not you agree with the criminalization of immigrant workers and families who have entered the U.S. without documents, the consequences of the Ana Romero case should touch a nerve. During her nearly 8 month imprisonment in the county jail while awaiting deportation, Ana was distraught and suffered from medical ailments, refusing to eat the food which she told family members"...stinks and there is something wrong with it."

These photos depict homes, building and abandoned structures along Martin Lutheran King, Jr. Boulevard in Augusta, Georgia.
It began with research in Athens and Augusta (Georgia) through the University Of Georgia School Of Environmental Design.
Research was led by Dr. Mary Anne Akers in collaboration with Georgia Legal Services Program, Georgia State Trade Association of Non-profit Developers (G-STAND) and Neighborhood Works America, INC.

EDIT - After vomiting three times in one night and suffering severe heartburn which led me to the Korean ER, I am no longer, ever eating McDonald's french fries again. Instant karma got me, I guess! Also, I think I already lost 2 lbs. in just one week from not eating the things.
So, McDonald's has become part of my life again in Korea. Back in Portland, I'd go to McDonald's and get french fries maybe once every year and a half and always feel immensely guilty about it afterwards, because McDonald's french fries are not actually vegan or even vegetarian. That's right - because of a small amount of natural flavor which I believe has beef fat in it, McDonald's french fries don't even have the decency to be vegetarian.
Now I'm a vegan and I've been a vegan since 2003. Some people (many people in fact) would say that after what I just said I'm not, in fact, a vegan. And back in Portland, hell, I didn't feel great about the occasional french fry breakdown - there was really no excuse what with all the vegan fried food lurking about the place.
But here, in Korea, where the one vegetarian restaurant in my neighborhood closes at 9 p.m. every night and many worknights I don't get home til after 10 - I say I'm a motherfucking vegan even though my french fry consumption has gone up considerably.
They're really horrible for me, and yes, I've seen Super Size Me, but would you want to cook if you finished work at 10 p.m. and you lived in a tiny apartment with one burner on the stove and about 1/5 the counter space of the average American kitchen and you're a vegan so you can't just buy soup and throw it in a pot and heat it up? Well, would you?
Hence, McDonald's french fries. I'll probably wean off them again after intensive classes are over in February but for now, god help me, "I'm lovin' it." And yeah, that's their slogan in Korea too.

This ad hoc acoustic supergroup started around a table at a small pub in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Ry Cavanaugh, Billy Conway, Sean Staples, Dinty Child, Jim Fitting and other friends gathered to swap songs and stories. Their lively performances and inspired versions of tunes from the dusty backroads of America's past were such a hit with fans that they decided to take their musical conversation into the studio. The two-CD debut Tabletop People ups the ante with stellar appearances by folksinger Rose Polenzani, Twinemen's Laurie Sargent, Dennis Brennan, Asa Brebner, Merrie Amsterburg, Dan Kellar, Presidents of the United States' Chris Ballew, Jabe Beyer, Tim Gearon and other luminaries. And the 18 gritty, funny, soulful performances included span a gamut of emotions and tastes that should please both adult and younger listeners.

A suit-case drum kit, an old electric bass, a bunch of acoustic instruments, a field organ: This format feels very theatrical and though the musicians face each other, the audience feels drawn into the circle by the warmth, joy and camaraderie that emanate outwards by the all star cast of characters seated around the table. What keeps you coming back show after show is the same thing that any audience member longs for, great songs performed by a great band. The six core members of the band have brought enviable careers worth of experience to the “table”, featuring (current and former) members of Treat Her Right, Patty Griffin, Lori McKenna, The The, Dennis Brennan, Kris Delmhorst. G-Print. Impossible to copy.
Since 1975.
1975. Bell-bottoms, disco, seaweed wallpaper in shades of brown, hair, a lot of hair, afros on every- body and voluptuous sideburns, roller-skates, Led Zeppelin. Coffee and oil is very expensive. The first disposable razor. Ali beats Frazier in the “Thrilla in Manilla”, The King is alive and kicking in Vegas and the king of Sweden is yet to be married. Gerald Ford is president in the USA, Brezhnev in the USSR. It’s the year when General Franco dies and Angelina Jolie and Tiger Woods are born.
Despite an oil crisis and prolonged recession, 1975 was a carefree time with more solutions than problems. A dualistic era where the colourful visions from the 60’s still lived but popular culture interpreted those visions in darker Kodachromatic tones. It was decency and decadence. It was the birth of the peace- and environmentalist movements, amidst a full-blown cold war.
Also, in 1975 a new paper is born – G-Print.
Since then, for 35 years, G-Print’s been loved for its overall quality and consistency by merchants and printers alike. And most importantly there’s been no significant changes in paper properties over all those years. This equals 35 years of perfection for a paper and a paper production process that is, “Impossible to copy”.
In this boxed DM, distributed to 20.000 paper clients all over Europe, Arctic Paper, the owner of G-Print, push the “Impossible to copy” message via an anachronistic box including mini examples of paper applications. A mini DM, a mini cookbook, a mini Magazine and a mini Poster and Map. All showcasing classics from 1975. Not very incidentally, just like G-Print.
I actually don't know that she is a Southern girl. I went down to South Carolina last Sunday, and stopped by the Anderson Jockey Lot Flea Market. It's maybe four times as big as the Webb Road Flea Market, over near Salisbury, North Carolina, and that flea market seems big. However, the day was hot, and many of the booths were empty. They say they have 2000 booths, but I'd bet there weren't 500 occupied.
No one had any photos, except perhaps for some reproduction photos of Dale Earnhardt. I stopped at all the used book stalls, asking if they had found any photos in the books. Finally, one dealer said yes, he had seen a photo in a book---it was in a book called (something like) "How To Fly Your Own Airplane." He hunted around for five minutes looking for the book. Finally he found it, and there was the photo.
"Here, you can have this," he said.
On such small neighborly decency my faith in humanity is renewed, again and again. It's not a bad photo, but the getting of it was a treasure.

Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival, Woodburn, Oregon
I picked up a season pass for the tulip festival this year so I plan on making several trips. This is a 2 exposure blend (1 for the sky and 1 for the tulips) of a brief moment of epicness during a Saturday morning sunrise. For awhile it looked like we were going to get skunked for an epic light show, but the clouds behind us were turning nice and pink so I photographed that direction for a bit. One thing I noticed was that very few photographers turned around to photograph the pink clouds behind them, the majority were still facing and waiting for the sun to rise. Session Americana sit tightly around a small cafe table, ambient mics tuned to catch the whole sound of the voices and instruments. A suit-case drum kit, an old electric bass, a bunch of acoustic instruments, a field organ: This format feels very theatrical and though the musicians face each other, the audience feels drawn into the circle by the warmth, joy and camaraderie that emanate outwards by the all star cast of characters seated around the table. What keeps you coming back show after show is the same thing that any audience member longs for, great songs performed by a great band. The six core members of the band have brought enviable careers worth of experience to the “table”, featuring (current and former) members of Treat Her Right, Patty Griffin, Lori McKenna, The The, Dennis Brennan, Kris Delmhorst. The Manneken Pis fountain, also known as "Little Julian", was sculpted by Jerome Duquesnoy the Elder in 1619. It provided the water supply for the Sablons district near the Grand-Place in Brussels. The chubby little boy (manneken means little man), whose unself-conscious gesture has a certain cheeky charm, is said to symbolize the Brabant people's lively sense of humor and their vitality. The custom of giving him outfits to wear may have been established for reasons of decency, or more probably to honor Brussels' most famous and "oldest citizen". The donors range from Louis XV, who presented him with a beautiful French outfit, to the Military Police, who offered him a uniform. Almost every country has made a contribution to his wardrobe, which takes up an entire room in the Musee de la Ville de Bruxelles.
07 November 2018 — The Philippines and Japan signed exchange of notes on two official development assistance (ODA) projects geared towards enhancing defense and transport capabilities at the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on 7 November 2018.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro L. Locsin, Jr. and Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Koji Haneda signed the Exchange of Notes on the Grant Aid of the Government of Japan to the Philippines of Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) UH-1H Parts and Maintenance Equipment to the Philippine Air Force (PAF); and on the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT3) Rehabilitation.
In his remarks, Secretary Locsin noted how Japan has supported the Philippines’ development objectives.
“Throughout the years, Japan has vigorously and unfailingly supported the priorities of the Philippine government for the wellbeing of the Filipino people—and in particular through economic and development assistance as well as in enhancing our defense and security capabilities. It is help that has no agenda but friendship, decency, and a deep and abiding regard, as much for the safety and wellbeing of neighbors, as for oneself,” Secretary Locsin said.
“This is why we have elevated our relationship with Japan to a strategic partnership. Today’s Exchange of Notes affirms this ever-growing, mutually beneficial and gratifying relationship between our two countries and our two peoples,” he added.
For his part, Ambassador Haneda reflected on the successes of Philippine-Japan partnership, and how it remains to be committed to its “joint work”.
“With the signing of these two projects, let me assure you that we do not only mark our commitments on paper, we also pledge our all-out efforts in bringing these projects into successful completion,” Ambassador Haneda stated.
The Grant Aid on UH-1H parts and maintenance equipment to the PAF, involves Japan’s grant of some ¥5.31 billion (around PhP2.46 billion) worth of spare parts and maintenance equipment of UH-1H helicopters by the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) consisting of the following categories: airframe structure; dynamic power system, control system; rotor system; hydraulic system; electrical system; instrument system; accessory equipment; and others.
The UH-1H helicopters are used in the PAF’s activities related to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, transport, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.
Meanwhile, the Project on the MRT-3 rehabilitation involves the complete rehabilitation of MRT-3 to restore its design capacity and reliability, the general overhaul of MRT-3's entire fleet of 72 Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs), and day-to-day maintenance.
The ¥38-billion (around PhP17.79 billion) loan facility will be used to cover the railway line’s trains, power supply system, overhead catenary system, radio system, closed-circuit television system, public address system, signalling system, rail tracks, road rail vehicles, depot equipment, elevators and escalators and other station-building equipment.
The Project will have a duration of 43 months, with the rehabilitation to be completed in the first 26 months, and the general overhaul to be completed by the 43rd month.
The exchanges of notes were witnessed by Defense Secretary Delfin N. Lorezana, Transportation Undersecretary for Railways Timothy John Batan, Finance Undersecretary for the International Finance Group Atty. Mark Dennis Joven, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)-Tokyo Senior Vice President Yasushi Tanaka, JICA-Philippines Chief Representative Yoshio Wada and officials from the DFA, the Departments of Finance, Transportation, and National Defense, the Japanese Embassy and JICA.
Japan is the Philippines’ top ODA partner and has contributed significantly to the country’s development and capacity building measures in areas that include infrastructure, security, health, trade, tourism, human resources, agriculture, education, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, among many others.
The two countries celebrated the 60th anniversary of the normalization of their diplomatic relations in 2016. END

These photos depict homes, building and abandoned structures along Martin Lutheran King, Jr. Boulevard in Augusta, Georgia.
It began with research in Athens and Augusta (Georgia) through the University Of Georgia School Of Environmental Design.
Research was led by Dr. Mary Anne Akers in collaboration with Georgia Legal Services Program, Georgia State Trade Association of Non-profit Developers (G-STAND) and Neighborhood Works America, INC.

“Today, I am taking the next step on a lifetime path of change. Experience has taught me that sometimes change happens to you and sometimes you must make it happen. The one thing I do know is that I can not do it alone and that is why I'm here today to ask for your support.
“I am running for Congress because this country is on the wrong course in so many ways and we need change. I am here ready to lead that change.
“I'm running to change a policy of folly in Iraq. We have prosecuted a war without a strategy, exposed our servicemen and women to danger without adequate armor and equipment, and shuffled the wounded to medical facilities that are unsanitary and understaffed.
“I am the proud product of a military family. My father, an Air Force Colonel, survived the bombing of Pearl Harbor and devoted his entire career to military service. While growing up we lived on bases throughout the country and the world, including Germany and Japan. There I learned the values of service, self-reliance, and sacrifice. It was a time when America was respected around the globe. And it was also a time when our country welcomed its veterans with the GI
Bill, not the warehousing of wounded soldiers at Walter Reed. We must recapture that sense of gratitude to those who fight on our behalf. We need to end the war in Iraq, bring our courageous young men and women home quickly and safely and care for them once they're here. This is our moral obligation. In Congress, I will champion nothing less.
“I am running to make our country more secure. You know, my Dad used to say you don't know what a good defense is until you don't have it. Tragically, we learned that lesson on 9/11 and again when Hurricane Katrina showed how vulnerable and unprepared we were. We finally need to implement the recommendations of the 9/11 commission to strengthen our border security. And we need to invest in our first line of defense -- our police, firefighters, and emergency

“When I first came to Lowell in the summer of 1967, I was a college student in love with the very handsome son of one of Lowell's immigrant families. But, then again, it's his life. And who am I to judge. I rarely hear the man complain and can count on one hand the number of times I've seen him upset. Each time we leave Ron, he prays for us. His words are beautiful. Maybe he knows more than we give him credit for. God may be all he has, but isn't God really all we need? Ron, you are truly a beautiful soul and you are so very loved.**

1975. Bell-bottoms, disco, seaweed wallpaper in shades of brown, hair, a lot of hair, afros on every- body and voluptuous sideburns, roller-skates, Led Zeppelin. Coffee and oil is very expensive. The first disposable razor. Ali beats Frazier in the “Thrilla in Manilla”, The King is alive and kicking in Vegas and the king of Sweden is yet to be married.
Despite an oil crisis and prolonged recession, 1975 was a carefree time with larger solutions to smaller problems. A dualistic era where the colourful visions from the 60’s still lived but popular culture interpreted those visions in darker Kodachromatic tones. It was decency and decadence. It was the birth of the peace- and environmentalist movements, amidst a full-blown cold war. Also, in 1975 a new paper is born – G-Print.
Since then, for 35 years, G-Print’s been loved for its overall quality and consistency by merchants and printers alike. And most importantly there’s been no significant changes in paper properties over all those years. This equals 35 years of perfection for a paper and a paper production process that is, “Impossible to copy”.

This ad hoc acoustic supergroup started around a table at a small pub in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Ry Cavanaugh, Billy Conway, Sean Staples, Dinty Child, Jim Fitting and other friends gathered to swap songs and stories. Their lively performances and inspired versions of tunes from the dusty backroads of America's past were such a hit with fans that they decided to take their musical conversation into the studio. The two-CD debut Tabletop People ups the ante with stellar appearances by folksinger Rose Polenzani, Twinemen's Laurie Sargent, Dennis Brennan, Asa Brebner, Merrie Amsterburg, Dan Kellar, Presidents of the United States' Chris Ballew, Jabe Beyer, Tim Gearon and other luminaries. And the 18 gritty, funny, soulful performances included span a gamut of emotions and tastes that should please both adult and younger listeners.

Session Americana sit tightly around a small cafe table, ambient mics tuned to catch the whole sound of the voices and instruments. A suit-case drum kit, an old electric bass, a bunch of acoustic instruments, a field organ: This format feels very theatrical and though the musicians face each other, the audience feels drawn into the circle by the warmth, joy and camaraderie that emanate outwards by the all star cast of characters seated around the table. What keeps you coming back show after show is the same thing that any audience member longs for, great songs performed by a great band. The six core members of the band have brought enviable careers worth of experience to the “table”, featuring (current and former) members of Treat Her Right, Patty Griffin, Lori McKenna, The The, Dennis Brennan, Kris Delmhorst. The group has grown from a rag tag jam at a local pub to a regional institution, playing gigs from church coee houses to urban nightclubs to regional festival tents to large halls.
