Half of the photographs in this little album, well, more than half, make me want to cry. This photograph makes me want to cry. This is the kind of photograph I look at and wonder why the world isn't a better place, when there are so many good people in it, with such a will to goodness and decency.
When I do my book of American occupational photographs, I'm going to put this photograph in it, if she'll let me. I've got a lot of photographs of pretty women, red-blooded American girls, in their nurses' outfits. Mary Louise is the fairest of them all.

After the shock of Donald Trump’s inauguration day, when millions of Americans (and visiting foreigners like me) felt understandably distraught, bereft, dismayed, as the grotesque, narcissistic, predatory, corrupt fraud that is Donald Trump delivered a bleak and graceless inauguration speech, it was nothing short of a delight on Saturday, Jan. 21, Day 2 of the aberrant Trump presidency, when, across the country and around the world, millions of women (plus large numbers of supportive men) marched in protest against Trump and all he and his administration stand for — his disdain for women, his racism, his xenophobia, his adherence to intolerant white Christian fundamentalism, and, last but not least, his opaque, but very obviously corrupt business practices. This particular photo - although out of focus - highlights a particular problem with the new president : his refusal to publish his tax returns. Two US academics have estimated that between 3.3m and 4.6m people marched in total across the US, with New York’s turnout estimated at between 400,000 and 500,000 people.
Stepping out of Grand Central Station into a river of protest, with more clever, witty and insightful handmade posters than you could imagine, and with chants and cheers punctuating the general hubbub at regular intervals was to feel that perhaps this dystopian vision of America can indeed be overthrown before it wreaks untold havoc at home and abroad. And with no beginning or end of the protest in sight, it was easy to believe that the number marching was much larger than even the academics’ estimate.
It will take more than one day, of course, as the people of America need to unite like never before — everyone who didn’t vote for Trump, everyone threatened by Trump, everyone appalled by Trump, including, of course, those who voted for him but might already be having second thoughts. This could be a disastrous presidency, or it could be even worse than that, but people need to put aside any notions of complacency, and work out how to resist. This was a great start, and a historic moment that everyone there will remember, but now there needs to be much more action and organizing.
As you look at these photos, however, I hope they are a reminder of a day of hope across the US and around the world, when ordinary people demonstrated that fundamental decency will not be silenced, and that a tolerant, multi-racial society, featuring, at its heart, equality between women and men, and between people whatever their race, creed or color, has humour, intelligence and compassion that throw into even sharper relief how troublingly miserable, negative and ungenerous Donald Trump and his advisors are.

Session Americana - from www.sessionamericana.com
This ad hoc acoustic supergroup started around a table at a small pub in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Ry Cavanaugh, Billy Conway, Sean Staples, Dinty Child, Jim Fitting and other friends gathered to swap songs and stories. Their lively performances and inspired versions of tunes from the dusty backroads of America's past were such a hit with fans that they decided to take their musical conversation into the studio. The two-CD debut Tabletop People ups the ante with stellar appearances by folksinger Rose Polenzani, Twinemen's Laurie Sargent, Dennis Brennan, Asa Brebner, Merrie Amsterburg, Dan Kellar, Presidents of the United States' Chris Ballew, Jabe Beyer, Tim Gearon and other luminaries. And the 18 gritty, funny, soulful performances included span a gamut of emotions and tastes that should please both adult and younger listeners.

Session Americana sit tightly around a small cafe table, ambient mics tuned to catch the whole sound of the voices and instruments. A suit-case drum kit, an old electric bass, a bunch of acoustic instruments, a field organ: This format feels very theatrical and though the musicians face each other, the audience feels drawn into the circle by the warmth, joy and camaraderie that emanate outwards by the all star cast of characters seated around the table. What keeps you coming back show after show is the same thing that any audience member longs for, great songs performed by a great band. The six core members of the band have brought enviable careers worth of experience to the “table”, featuring (current and former) members of Treat Her Right, Patty Griffin, Lori McKenna, The The, Dennis Brennan, Kris Delmhorst. The group has grown from a rag tag jam at a local pub to a regional institution, playing gigs from church coee houses to urban nightclubs to regional festival tents to large halls.

"The image of a Syrian child's lifeless body washed up on the shores of a Turkish beach this week brought the world to its knees. His name was Aylan Kurdi, and he was just three years old.
The sad reality is that Aylan was one among millions of desperate people forced to flee from war and persecution. The world is facing a global refugee crisis on a scale we've not seen since WWII, but Australia - our lucky country of a fair go for all - is not doing enough. We can do better to help these people.
We need to do better."

Wherein Leslie and Sarah write a poem together.
Instructions are for each partner
1. Ruminate over nice-sounding words, and pick ten of them.
2. Swap word lists.
3. Write a line of poetry with any word from the other person's list.
4. Return each line with a line using a word from the other person's list.
Because you will EACH do this, you will have two poems going at the same time; use your partner's ten words twice, once for each poem, and you will have two 20-line poems at the end. Or, if you find it too confusing, write just one poem, or write a second when you've finished the first.
Optional: Shoot photographs to illustrate each poem.
Use the words only once per poem, in any order. Words can be altered for tense, person, and number, if necessary.
Note: Sarah started the poem below. We'll shoot the other poem and post it tomorrow.
Sarah's Words
speckled
rapt
misconstrued

undulant
stimulating
halcyon
illusion
depth
kismet
Leslie's Words
trigger
bird
feckless

unmasked
faith
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
faith on the rocks
She makes a barter with God
give me one halcyon moment
a last shred of decency
between peaks of undulant pain
She is a bird fluttering wildly.
What could I trade—kismet?
She is a feckless creature on the forest floor,
and her God is all illusion anyway.
Hands knitted in prayer, she laughs,
her pose misconstrued as belief.
The lines of her fingers trigger memories
of a childhood spent rapt by Jewish ritual,
of mysteries since unmasked, unfiltered.
Now nothing of religion is stimulating, no
stray meaning can find its home here,
where a speckled starling is most exalted.
She pours another gin and tonic, on the rocks,
finds in the glass as much depth as she can handle.
Here is a faith she can count on—
its promise not a particle more than it delivers.

One little aside: Sarah's photo made me cry the moment I saw it. I can be counted on for the cliché, but hers was wholly terrific.
New York DMV........ (Department Motor Vehicles) ......... Its like the USSR......
I remember presenting a voucher to show I'd paid for a hotel in Moscow it was a computer print out from a travel agent....... but they wouldn't accept it because it didn't have a stamp on it.......... I found this weirdly old fashioned even 20 years back......... I'd seen no real reliance on rubber stamps to prove authenticity in Britain ....... The vile woman behind the counter yelled at the top her with a heavy Russian accent voice 'no stamp! Get Out!' as if presenting a feeble computer print out was a total insult to decency ............ I took it that the old Soviet style of 'you must have 3 triplicate applications all written out in longhand then stamped by the relevant officials\' to be a sign of bureaucracy inefficient antiquated authoritarianism........... the kind of thing you could never see in a Western country....... er....... well not unless you go to the New York DMV
Huge lines of depressed people as if waiting for bread in the USSR ...... but in fact lining up only to eventually deal with the vile arbitrary authority behind the counters demanding stamps on your entry papers..... a recognizable stamp on your birth certificate..... signed photographs, duly stamped, notarized and authorized...... with counter signatures and stamps on the photographs of both grand parents....... notarized documentation of all the people who were in your kindergarten class with counter signed photographs of their parents ..... an authorized notarized copy of the title documents....... proof that you have not now or ever have in the past lived in DC.
I wasted all day in there a month back as the Beast car is still registered in DC ...... they didn't register it as I had not complied properly with the petty stamps and pretend problems with my documents ........ I went away and did exactly what I was instructed to do to comply ...... came back today to waste another whole day......... but now the requirements have arbitrarily changed........ the instructions given before and painstakingly carried out by me are just regarded as the ranting of a lunatic......... Last time I had to get the insurance documents changed......... get the insurance company to issue them again with slightly different wording on the policy holders name....... I did that ....... now thats no longer what is required....... in fact something different is now required for the wording on the insurance ..... but not what was required before........ and of course equally difficult to organize the new requirements are now different to what was required before regarding the title documents etc etc....... blah blah blah............
Funny ....... How can this clunking vile bureaucracy can be part of the infrastructure of New York City......... this place is funny....... it's a weird mixture of thrusting futuristic glass towers and commerce........ and a weirdly third world paper pushing state government....... full of authoritarian slothful jobs worth types with their stamps and their legendary pride in their unhelpfulness........ thanks Commissar Lent I absolutely see why you were awarded the Order of Lenin (third class) for services to petty authoritarian government and paper clip organizing.
I guess you have to try and look on the bright side............. at least I don't work there.......... how depressing would that be.

I think I ought to end my story of the tragedy of the Shenandoah Antique Show right here and now, with this photo. Jimmy Cliff is singing "You Get It If You Really Want" (I'm still at Starbucks). I was still looking for the boss lady to show here how wrong she was. A second help desk person, not the villainess peon lady, but another employee of uncommon decency, sought to help me. She called the boss man on the radio. Finally, it was determined that the boss man was in the restroom.
We were standing outside of the men's room, right there at the entrance to the main building. The boss man came walking out, and the employee called him over. I explained my irritation. I told the man that I thought it was wrong to advertise something and then not deliver it. I told him I wanted him to admit they had been wrong.
Reluctantly, he did so.
I doubled down. I told the man that I thought the proper thing to do was to give me a free pass to the fall show. It's said that I had to suggest to the man a way to make things right. But such is life. The woman, who I suppose was the wife, the boss lady, who was standing there, listening to us talk, said, "I told him we were wrong." She had told me no such thing.
For this bald-faced lie, this woman, unrepentant, will descend to a level of Hades as yet to be determined. However, for the purposes of my story, this little tidbit adds a certain piquant juiciness. So, while she was lying in the extreme, she gave me a modicum of pleasure, so I suppose I should thank her.
The boss man took a flyer for the spring show and wrote on it something like "admit one to the fall show" and signed it. I think he signed his real name. I hope he did. If he did not, we will have to add some new levels to Hades to house him.
Thus endeth my short short story.

Band: Ry Cavanaugh, Billy Beard, Dinty Child, Jim Fitting, Sean Staples and Jon Bistline.

Most people don't take their camera to the toilet. Even those who do generally have the common decency to actually *use* it in there.
