Managing to gaze into the open eyes of a snowy in daylight can be difficult, at best. Their sensitive retinas leave them squinting throughout most of the day… that is when they are not actually sleeping. But in the minutes before sunrise, when its rays lazily find their way above the horizon, the beaches and bays are eerily blue and the golden iris of the snowy glows with pupils as large as saucers. It takes luck! Luck finding a bird in a suitable place, luck having a cloudless sunrise, and luck finding an owl motionless enough to allow for a photograph in such low light. As luck would have it, we were -- quite lucky. It was a brief but memorable moment at twilight dawn, indeed. #SnowyOwls

With the last of the daylight ebbing away across the snowfields of Buckinghamshire, GBRf's 66758 "The Pavior" approaches the site of the Great Train Robbery near Mentmore. Timed at 3.36pm, about 15 minutes before sunset, the train is 4Z08, 11:29 Felixstowe - Birch Coppice.
The WSOR ran a daylight L355 west this afternoon on the Monroe Sub which doesn't happen too often. WAMX 4175/4170 have 62 cars coming up the hill and out of the tree tunnel at Orfordville pretty much cutting the entire town in half.
Oh, and the purple thing on top of the short hood? Keeping their drinking water cold I guess.......

A rare late running Susquehanna SU-99 rolls over the Delaware River at Mill Rift, PA on it's journey to Binghamton. The four SD60's are the newest addition to the yellow jackets in this July 2012 photo.
Southern Pacific GS4 4449 was overnighting at Milwaukee's Amtrak station on its way home from Michigan. An outbound plane from Mitchell Field was leaving a trail as it passed overhead.
The famous west-coaster was always one of my favorites of the restored steam locomotives. Even if it is oil-fired.

The tunnel roof was broken here so daylight was streaming in. It was exciting not knowing what was around the next bend!
While staying in Hong Kong over Christmas I got to explore the Shing Mun Redoubt, the central part of a Maginot line-like series of fortifications across the New Territories, built in the 1930s. Like the Maginot Line the defences were completely inadequate - the Japanese army swept through here in early December 1941, when there were only 30 men holding the line at this point. Can you imagine? After that the British army retreated back to Hong Kong island,and eventually surrendered to the Japanese on Christmas Day 1941.
The network of tunnels were all named after London streets to help the soldiers remember where they all were, and you can still see the names today. You’re not really supposed to go into them, but I’d just bought a new torch that I really needed to test out…it’s very atmospheric and quite creepy, I was never quite sure what was going to be around the next corner.

The extra hour of sleep was great, but the light being dead-on the train at Squaw Brook.... well I guess another winter upon us here in Maine. CP 142 with a friendly crew and decent train rumbles on the northern outskirts of Greenville area. The train has since gone to a 5-day schedule as container ships took a long break until end of this month before a double header at Saint John 11/27 and 12/2. Surely that'll push them back to 7 days a week... or completely mess them up.
