Short Eared Owl - Asio flammeus
Norfolk
Over much of its range, short-eared owls occurs with the similar-looking long-eared owl. At rest, the ear-tufts of long-eared owl serve to easily distinguish the two (although long-eared owls can sometimes hold its ear-tufts flat). The iris-colour differs: yellow in short-eared, and orange in long-eared, and the black surrounding the eyes is vertical on long-eared, and horizontal on short-eared. Overall the short-eared tends to be a paler, sandier bird than the long-eared.
The short-eared owl occurs on all continents except Antarctica and Australia; thus it has one of the most widespread distributions of any bird. A. flammeus breeds in Europe, Asia, North and South America, the Caribbean, Hawaii and the Galápagos Islands. It is partially migratory, moving south in winter from the northern parts of its range. The short-eared owl is known to relocate to areas of higher rodent populations. It will also wander nomadically in search of better food supplies during years when vole populations are low.
Hunting occurs mostly at night, but this owl is known to be diurnal and crepuscular as well. Its daylight hunting seems to coincide with the high-activity periods of voles, its preferred prey. It tends to fly only feet above the ground in open fields and grasslands until swooping down upon its prey feet-first. Several owls may hunt over the same open area. Its food consists mainly of rodents, especially voles, but it will eat other small mammals such as mice, ground squirrels, shrews, rats, bats, muskrats and moles. It will also occasionally predate smaller birds, especially when near sea-coasts and adjacent wetlands at which time they attack shorebirds, terns and small gulls and seabirds with semi-regularity. Avian prey is more infrequently preyed on inland and centers on passerines such as larks, icterids, starlings, tyrant flycatchers and pipits.
I took this photo on the way to Kawhia, just before entering the township.

And I can still see it all (In my mind)
All of you, all of me (Intertwined)
I once believed love would be (Black and white)
But it's golden (golden)
And I can still see it all (In my head)
Back and forth from New York (Sneaking in your bed)
I once believed love would be (Burning red)
But it's golden
Like daylight, like daylight
Like daylight, daylight
I wanna be defined by the things that I love
Not the things I hate, not the things that I'm afraid of, I'm afraid of.. Not the things that haunt me in the middle of the night
I, I just think that.. you are what you love ❤
For several years, Montana Rail Link operated a passenger train on portions of its scenic routes called the “Montana Rockies Daylight,” commonly called “Montana Daylight,” operated by Montana Rockies Rail Tours. In this view, the eastbound train passes the mile 23.5 semaphore west of Eddy, Montana, on September 10, 1999. The lead locomotive is unique EMD GP19-1 No. 151 rebuilt by MRL from a former Northern Pacific GP9. This one-of-a-kind locomotive was involved in a switching accident and scrapped in 2008. The passenger train itself didn’t fare much better, discontinued after the 2004 season.

During the rut, we often hear the incredible, otherworldly sound of a bull elk bugling. But just how are they making that noise?
Until recently, scientists were stumped — the bugles reach pitches that are far too high to be produced by an elk’s voice box. It turns out there are two forces at work.
Use your binoculars to take a look at a bugling male – you’ll see that he is moving both his lips and his nostrils. That’s right: he’s roaring and whistling simultaneously.
And there......you’ve got the famous elk bugle.
We happened upon this handsome fella in early hours of daylight in Grand Teton National Park. He treated us to his bugle in the chilly morning air....
Have a great new week ahead !
My times in Cayman Islands I witnessed very slow, soft colored Sunsets. Any nightlife that I enjoyed while there never began until the Sun was totally out of sight. Sunsets there were always beautiful and different every time I witnessed one. “Daylight Leaves Us.” It’s such a grand way to say goodbye to the day and welcome to the evening. Spending the last hour or so of daylight watching the sun set with your main squeeze waist deep in the warm water of the Caribbean Sea is a great way to welcome the evening. Good music easy dining and a cocktail or two was always good enough for me. Thanks for viewing my work. Gratitude and Kindness will always follow you when include Gratitude and Kindness in your daily dealing with others.

NECR 610 heads south over Horton Cove with a couple blue and golds leading. With Freeport in Norwich no longer taking cars, it was a straight shot to New London along the Thames River after working C.C. Lounsbury in South Windham. With this week being the longest days of the year, it was still daylight by the time they rumbled across the Horton Cove trestle in Montville, with the 3845 and 3857.

I don't feel so good. Horror stories, that I believed are history, now walks in our daylight and... Is the daylight fading? All these photos feels all the sudden so pathetic...
BNSF GP60M #125 and two CN units bring a 41-car HNTWSUP off the Hinckley Sub. and onto the Lakes Sub. at Boylston, WI on June 30, 2022.
This summer, the Northtown-Soup has mainly made its daily trip into Superior right after dark. A combination of an earlier call time and a short train allowed this one to escape Northtown in good time and make it to the north end in daylight on the last evening of June.
