Dave Brubeck died yesterday, but this is really three pages about my mother.
We went to an outdoor concert in or near Boston- a huge event. Somehow- during the break- we were in front, at the rope. My Mom was talking quietly with Dave Brubeck, but not about music:
We had lived near Walnut Creek- a new town in Contra Costa County in Northern California. It came out that Dave's Dad had owned the acreage where our new tract house had been built. He said that if his Dad had not sold the land, he himself, wouldn't have to tour.
How on earth did it happen that Mom and Brubeck spent the whole break, chatting.?
What was particularly fun for me (about age 18 and a jazz lover) was that Paul Desmond was standing just behind Dave, contemplatively playing the whole time.
It happened twice that Mom chatted with the lead musician of a concert.
We went to a concert of the Budapest String Quartet at the Worcester Museum.
Again, Mom was the one who was upstairs, during the break, chatting with Alexander Schneider, the lead violin.
Again, it was not about music, but cooking.
They were the only ones up there.

- in the news, you'll be hearing the song, "Take 5", written by Paul Desmond.
- Brubeck went to Mills College and studied with Darius Millhaud ( pron: Mee-YO' ). Millaud advised him to study the local music when he travelled. don't know Desmond's relation to that, but the strange beat in the song, with the 5/4 signature, is five beats per measure.
I'm having a hard time, picking out the five, but the beat sounds like this:
Bu-di bu-di, bum bum,
Bu-di bu-di, bum bum

Michael Bierut, moderator
Dave Eggers is the author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and the editor and art director of McSweeney’s. Chip Kidd, the longtime art director at Alfred A. Knopf, has been called, “the closest thing to a rock star” in publishing by the Globe & Mail of Toronto. In 2004, the Cooper Hewitt Museum presented Milton Glaser with a lifetime achievement award. His memorable designs include the "I ♥ NY" logo and covers for Shakespeare’s works for several publishers. Graphic designer and critic Michael Beirut will introduce the evening and lead a discussion among Eggers, Glaser and Kidd following their respective presentations.

Dave, usually dressed in cowboy/farmers clothes had to put on this t-shirt for the orchard he was selling apples for and it was little tight and he was not to pleased with it.
Daves Pawn Shop depending on your point of view is either the weirdest place in downtown El Paso or the most fascinating place.
If Dave doesn't have it its not worth having. Everything from Pancho Villas mummified trigger finger to a stuffed rear end of some animal is available for a price.
