1- How was the local ABV Coordinator and the support provided in-country?

This trip was the first time I had traveled abroad by myself, and I was a little bit nervous about the logistics. However, I was very pleased to find that the ABV Coordinator (Beatriz) was exceptionally accommodating. Despite flight complications, and several other uncontrollable mishaps, my week in Peru was worry free and successful. A large of which can be attributed to the ABV Coordinator.

2- What was the most surprising thing you experienced?

The most surprising thing for me was the standard of the medical facility and staff. I was expecting far worse! It was a clean building with professional staff. While it is nice to know the patients at my clinic are in good hands, I wish I could have played a more integral role in the medical field.

3- What was most difficult to experience?

The most difficult thing for me was working with the children in the clinic. I was concerned by the conditions in which they lived. The physical environment was quite nice, however, the children lacked personal social attention. At the end of the day, it was hard for me to tear myself away from the kids.

4- Any tips for future volunteers… (clothing, travel, personal items, donations)

Make Machu at least a two day trip.

4.1-Other things volunteers should know:

a.-Don’t carry all your money around with you, even if it is in a money belt.

b.-Buy a map of the city and keep it with you. Study it a little bit if you have time.

c.-You might be surprised by the amazing conversations you can have with completely random people, if take the time to initiate it.

d.-Plan a group dinner with at least some of the other volunteers; it makes living in a foreign country far less lonely.

5- Personal Paragraph (ABV Program Testimonial):

Overall, I absolutely loved my experience in Cusco, Peru. It was definitely the best way I could have spent my one week of spring break. Although I volunteered in a medical setting, I would have liked to been included more in working with patients. That being said, I do feel as though I made a difference in the lives of some – the children. If asked whether or not I would sign up for this trip all over again, I would absolutely say, “Yes.”

Welcome snacks in a tagine were placed in our Riad room each day. Dates, raisins and almonds were a near sinful mixture after walking through the medina admiring the fragrances and snacks available. This simple pleasure may have done more to welcome us than any greeting at the door.

Bei den ersten Datteln hatte ich ja schon gedacht, es handele sich um 'frische' ... diese aber sind offensichtlich noch deutlich frischer und jünger. Allerdings liegt in ihrem Geschmack noch Entwicklungspotenzial!

The Church dates to the 15th-Century, the tower and it's distinctive pinnacles were built by Sir Thomas Cotton who's family were owners of nearby Conington Castle. The Castle has since disappeared but a stable block was left creating Conington House. The church was made redundant in the 1970's but is cared for by the CCT. Inside are Cotton memorials galore especially in the South Aisle Chapel.

The churchyard has a monument with a pilot's head dedicated to the American Airmen who served over here at the nearby airfield during WW II which became RAF Glatton.

Dates that is, and their sordid sex filled lives.

This roadside "stand" is an institution in Indio (east of Palm Springs in the Coachella Valley). Mr. Shields began growing date palms in the early 1920's and to make his roadside date store stand out from the myriad other date stores, began giving tourists seminars in the propagation of the date. Rita and I watched the film and were informed and enriched. Date farming is a time consuming and exacting profession!

these were the best dates ive ever tasted in my life. firas told me you´d pay well over 20 euro just ordering a cup of coffee ... but he knew a place where you can grab a little snack for free ;-)

ROMY HAAG Blind Dates

Singer Romy Haag is now embarking on a very special experiment in her new show: Musical "blind dates" are the focus of a project that holds exciting surprises and real discoveries in store. Because on stage, there will be encounters with artists Romy has never worked with before, including established singers and musicians from the underground, exciting new names that may not yet be known to Berlin audiences and Romy's very own insider tips.

Romy Haag skillfully spans the arc from the familiar to the magic of the new. In doing so, she always remains true to herself and once again lives up to her high standards of presenting a rocking, avant-garde and entertaining evening.

Romy Haag's concerts always resemble an enchanting rendezvous. They are poignant encounters with people and themes that have shaped the artist's multifaceted life over the past decades. Romy Haag is emotional, personally touching and also political in her songs. However, she always presents her cherished and new "favorite songs" without a rueful look back. Instead, the songs are characterized by the here and now.

Supplemented with interesting anecdotes from the various stages of her exciting life, the "Blind Dates" promise to be a captivating show.

بعد صلاة الجمعة احلا جلسة مع الوالدين وشوية قهوة وقشط

In late September I again visited Herefordshire and Worcestershire for three days of church-crawling. Several churches I visited were re-visits to capture better pictures than I managed to capture on previous visits. I did also visit some churches for the first time and these turned out to have some treasures of their own.

After visiting All Saints’ church, Church Lench I decided to visit St Peter’s Rous Lench which I had not visited before.

At the time of the Domesday Book the parish of Rous Lench was known as Bishops Lench being part of lands customarily held by the Bishops of Worcester. These lands were leased out to various people and Urse the Sheriff is recorded as holding the parish from the Bishop. It would seem that this was a place of some importance, evidenced by the fine Norman South doorway with a Norman statue of Christ in Majesty above it. From 1397 to 1721 the lords of the Manor were the Rous family hence the modern name for the parish. After 1721 the lords of the manor were members of the Rouse Boughton family until 1876 when the parish was sold to the Rev. W. Chafy Chafy of Sherborne, Dorset. At about that time the Rev. W Chafy Chafy appeared in a list of the great landowners of Great Britain as owning nearly 4,000 acres of land the majority in Worcestershire. In 1884 the Rev. Chafy Chafy engaged Frederick Preedy to restore and enlarge the church. As part of the restoration of the church a mortuary chapel was added on the North side of the church into which monuments to the Rous family were moved in 1885. I suspect that the Rev. W. Chafy Chafy was an Anglo-Catholic high churchman as some of the interior features of the church especially the main altar with a highly decorated aumbry would suggest.

This picture shows the East window of the church. It depicts the Annuciation to the Virgin Mary by the Archangel Gabriel. Pevsner suggests the window dates to 1890 and may be the work of A L Moore but as far as I can see there is no signature.
