Throapham, St John the Baptist
This church dates from the 13th century – the tower, windows and font, however, are from the 15th century. Its great treasure is a beautifully carved stone coffin lid from 1300.

St John's Church, Throapham
St John's Church is a redundant Anglican church near the village of Throapham, on the road between Dinnington and Laughton-en-le-Morthen, South Yorkshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building, and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.
History
The church stands on the site of at least one Celtic well, and some of its fabric dates from the Anglo-Saxon period. Much of the church dates from the 12th century. The fabric of the nave dates from several phases of building during the medieval period. The tower was added in the 15th century, while in 1709 the chancel and porch were rebuilt. Restoration was carried out in the 19th century. St John's was vested in the Trust on 1 May 1985.
Architecture
Structure
St John's is constructed in ashlar limestone; the main roofs are of stainless steel, while the aisles have slate roofs. Its plan consists of a three-bay nave with a clerestory, north and south aisles and a south porch, a two-bay chancel, and a west tower. The tower is in Perpendicular style and has three stages. At its west end are diagonal buttresses, a blocked west door and a three-light window. There are string courses between the stages. In the top stage are two-light bell openings, and the top of the tower has an embattled parapet with gargoyles on the north side. The arcades between the nave and the aisles date from about 1200.
Furniture and fittings
The octagonal font is in Perpendicular style. It is carved with traceried panels and has a castellated top. Also on the font are carvings depicting faces from the three continents that were known at the time of its carving. Also in the church is a carved stone coffin lid dating from about 1300. This is in two pieces and is carved with foliage in high relief. It is described as being "remarkable", and as a "great treasure".
Present day
The management of the church is assisted by a local group of volunteers, the Friends of Throapham Church. The church is available for visiting and open weekends and guided tours are organised.

Planned Parenthood dates its origins to 1916 when Margaret Sanger opened the first birth control clinic in America and was arrested for disseminating information about reproduction. Today, the Planned Parenthood Federation of America is the umbrella organization for 88 regional affiliates and 840 clinics, providing reproductive health care and sex education to over three million people annually.
In 2003, the Federation launched “Power the Promise,” the first national capital campaign in its distinguished and turbulent 87-year history. Nesnadny + Schwartz was named the lead visual communications firm for this massive, multi-year effort to raise $340 million.
Our task was to build a flexible portfolio of print and electronic tools for the campaign, customizable for the regional affiliates. We used the words “Power” and “Promise” as the driving graphic elements in designing the key components — a graphic identity system and business papers; a case statement cogently presenting the campaign initiatives; and a presentation portfolio with multiple white papers and program-specific brochures. We also designed the user-friendly campaign website with up-to-date news, information on fundraising progress, and on-line donation opportunities.

The stone vaulting above Bath Abbey's Chancel dates from the early 1500s. It was built by Master architects Robert and William Vertue and is considered one of the finest example of fan vaulting in the country. Even more breath taking when you consider that they chiseled this in situ 20 metres up in the air. Through serendipity last year I met Ben Dearnley, one of the Olympic sculptors (www.bendearnley.com). He described his vocation as using a chisel to discover the beauty that's hidden within a piece of rock. I'm sometimes a chisel that people can use to find fragments of themselves, hidden or forgotten deep within.
The Church dates to the 15th-Century, the tower and it's distinctive pinnacles were built by Sir Thomas Cotton who's family were owners of nearby Conington Castle. The Castle has since disappeared but a stable block was left creating Conington House. The church was made redundant in the 1970's but is cared for by the CCT. Inside are Cotton memorials galore especially in the South Aisle Chapel.
The churchyard has a monument with a pilot's head dedicated to the American Airmen who served over here at the nearby airfield during WW II which became RAF Glatton.
Dates that is, and their sordid sex filled lives.
This roadside "stand" is an institution in Indio (east of Palm Springs in the Coachella Valley). Mr. Shields began growing date palms in the early 1920's and to make his roadside date store stand out from the myriad other date stores, began giving tourists seminars in the propagation of the date. Rita and I watched the film and were informed and enriched. Date farming is a time consuming and exacting profession!

dates from a major rebuilding of between 1412 and 1429. However, the feature that cannot be ignored is the chapel and porch of John Greenway built in 1517. The carvings are just amazing. There are anchors and waves and ships of all kinds coming at you from all angles; not to mention the Barbary apes. This church was built on the back of trade: the wool trade which made Tiverton rich in the early 16th century.
Greenway was a poor Tiverton lad who rose to join the Drapers Company of London in 1497. His later association with the more widely trading Merchant Adventurers led him to become not only a wool-trader, but a ship owner with vessels such as the Trinity Greenway and Charity Greenway working out of Dartmouth. They are perhaps depicted on his chantry chapel. His monograms and merchants marks certainly appear within, along with his fine brass memorial.
A second chantry chapel, in memory of the famous Courtenay family, the Earls of Devon, once stood in the churchyard. It housed, amongst others, the gilded effigial monument of Princess Katherine, daughter of King Edward IV and wife of Sir William Courtenay, who died in 1527; but, unfortunately, the, already dilapidated building, was all but demolished during the Civil War.

Trastevere. San Crisogono. Dates from the 5thC; rebuilt in 12thC when the belfry was added. Main interest is in the Paleo-Christian church which lies beneath the "modern" church. It is accessed from the sacristy. Substantial parts of the original church - built in the 5thC, altered in the 8thC and abandoned in the 12thC upon the building of the new church - are available to explore - with remnants of fresco.
The present building dates from 1883 with subsequent extensions. Originally named the Glamorgan & Monmouthshire Infirmary & Dispensary, it was renamed the Cardiff Royal Infirmary in 1895. From 1911-1923 it was known as the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. It appears to have been enlarged considerably during WW1. The hospital, which is Grade II listed, underwent a thirty million pound refurbishment, finished in 2014.
The St. Philip Martyrium stands on top of the hill outside the northeastern section of the city walls. It dates from the 5th century. It was said that Philip was buried in the center of the building and, though his tomb has recently been unearthed, the exact location has not yet been verified. The Martyrium burned down at the end of the 5th or early 6th century, as attested by fire marks on the columns. Philip is said to have been martyred in Hierapolis by being crucified upside-down or by being hung upside down by his ankles from a tree.
The martyrium is usually taken to have been named after the Christian apostle Philip but from early times there has been some dispute as to the actual identity of "Philip of Hierapolis". This confusion started with a report by Polycrates of Ephesus in his Eusebius's Ecclesiastical History and in his controversial letter written to Victor of Rome towards the end of the 2nd century. In the letter, he reports that the graves of Philip "of the twelve apostles", and of his two aged virgin daughters were in (the Phrygian) Hierapolis; a third daughter, "who had lived in the Holy Ghost", was buried at Ephesus. With this may be compared the testimony of Clement of Alexandria, who incidentally speaks of "Philip the Apostle" as having begotten children and as having given daughters in marriage.
On the other hand, Proclus, one of the interlocutors in the "Dialogue of Caius", a writing of somewhat later date than the letter of Polycrates, mentions "four prophetesses, the daughters of Philip at Hierapolis in Asia, whose tomb and that of their father are to be seen there", where the mention of the daughters prophesying identifies the person meant with the Philip of Acts. Early traditions say this Philip was martyred by hanging in Phrygia. and was also known as "Philip the Apostle". The reasons for setting aside the evangelist identification, and for holding that the Philip who lived at Hierapolis was the Apostle are stated by Lightfoot, Colossians . Fresh confirmation of his view was afforded by the discovery of an inscription at Hierapolis, showing that the church there was dedicated to the memory "of the holy and glorious apostle and theologian Philip."Early traditions say this Philip was martyred by hanging in Phrygia and was also known as "Philip the Apostle".
The martyrium had a special design, probably executed by an architect of a Byzantine emperor. It has a central octagonal structure with a diameter of 20 metres (66 ft) under a wooden dome which is covered with lead tiles. This is surrounded with eight rectangular rooms, each accessible via three arches. Four were used as entrances to the church, the other four as chapels. The space between the eight rooms was filled with heptagonal chapels with a triangular apse. The dome above the apse was decorated with mosaics. The whole structure was surrounded by an arcade with marble columns. All the walls were covered with marble panels.
In 2011, it was announced that Philip's gravesite may have been discovered about 40 metres (130 ft) from the Martyrium.

This cabin dates from the 1790s, and may be the oldest standing structure in Jefferson County, TN. The new owners hoped to restore it, but that isn't feasible. So they are using as much as they can in a new home they will build here.
The part shown is the original pine log cabin. Over the years room were added on the left, and a kitchen in the rear.
