Another button from my vintage collection. This one is ⅝" wide and dates back to the 1940s. It's leaning against a piece of sari silk ribbon. I decided to keep it simple this week. :)

In the Middle Ages the historical town of Haddington in East Lothian was the fourth largest city in Scotland. Now it is simply the county town of East Lothian with a population of around 10,000. We very much enjoyed our visit in September 2019 and thought it was a delightful little town. Today the whole town centre is a conservation area with a high proportion of listed buildings, some dating back to the 16th century. This is the High Street and the tower and spire belong to the Town Hall. This dates from 1748 though the tower and spire were added in 1830.

For further details please see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haddington,_East_Lothian.

Dates From: circa 1840

Original Location: Concord, Ontario

This building was originally constructed in the 1830s as a second house at the Snider farm on Lot 2, Concession 4 in Vaughan Township. Later, after a larger and more comfortable house had been constructed, it became a worskhop — and at one time even housed a woodworking and blacksmith’s shop.

The Snider Workshop was moved to its current location at Black Creek Pioneer Village in 1967, as a Centennial project undertaken by the Snider family.

This is where the Lancaster Canal broadens out at Carnforth to allow canal boats to easily turn round. The canal dates from the late 1790s and was intended to improve the supply of coal from the Yorkshire coalfields to Lancaster. It was never completed, and trains eventually took over that role. These days, the canal runs from Tewitfield - a few miles north of Carnforth - down to Preston.

The first written mention dates back to 1465. The Gothic fortress in the valley of the Dírenský brook on a granite cliff was built in the 14th century. By damming the stream and breaking off the rock neck, the cliff turned into an island. In 1530, the Knights of the Káb from Rybňany became the owners of the fortress. Jan Kába of Rybňany had the old Gothic fortress rebuilt into a more comfortable Renaissance chateau, since then called "Nová Lhota".

The name "Červená Lhota" appears only from the beginning of the 17th century, according to the colour of the castle.

Those birds are not brushes, they are real :)

I took this with my best friend yesterday and she thought I was obsessed with birds because everytime I saw a bird in the sky, I screamed "bird" and busted out my camera. Hahaha :)

The Ship Inn nestled in the background of my photo dates back to 1567 when it was a customs house, before becoming a licensed hostelry in 1754. It was often visited by the young Scottish poet, Robert Burns, who lived in Irvine around 1781. Today it is modernised gastro-pub, famous for it’s steak pies.

The history of the house dates back to the early 1880s, when the sugar producer Nikolay Tereshchenko, Varvara Khanenko's father, bought a large plot of land with a three-story house on Oleksiivska Street, then new in Kyiv. During the years 1882-1888, another house was built on the free part of the plot - two-story from the front facade, three-story from the yard. The architect of the project was, most likely, Robert-Friedrich Meltzer. In 1888, Nikola Tereshchenko transferred the newly built house and part of the land plot to his eldest daughter Varvara.

Delfshaven dates back to the 14th century as it was built as the harbour for the city of Delft. The town is famous for the Pilgrim fathers who left Delfshaven in August 1620 on board of the Speedwell. The Zakkendragershuisje ("Bag cariers house") in the middle dates back to 1653.

The impressive Kas Amiphitheatre dates fron the 6th century BC. From the Hellenistic Period it overlooks the Mediterranean Sea, it has 26 tiers of seats, an agora (gathering place) and the remains of underground domed chambers, once used as silos.

With their pink and crimson plumage, long legs and necks, and strongly hooked bills, flamingos cannot be mistaken for any other type of bird. These beauties have long fascinated people. An accurate cave painting of a flamingo, found in the south of Spain, dates back to 5,000 B.C.

The flamingo’s pink or reddish color comes from the rich sources of carotenoid pigments in the algae and small crustaceans the birds eat. Caribbean flamingos, a subspecies of greater flamingo, are the brightest, showing their true colors of red, pink, or orange on their legs, bills, and faces.

Flamingos live in lagoons or large, shallow lakes. These bodies of water may be quite salty or caustic, too much so for most other animals. In some lakes, their only animal “neighbors” are algae, diatoms, and small crustaceans. That works in the flamingo’s favor, as the birds dine on these small creatures!

Chilean, Andean, and puna flamingos are found in South America; greater and lesser flamingos live in Africa, with greaters also found in the Middle East; the Caribbean subspecies is native to Mexico, the Caribbean, and the northernmost tip of South America.

The cathedral city of Ely is some 14 miles north north-east of Cambridge and 80 miles north of London. It is in the middle of the Cambridgeshire Fens and is built on a 23-square-mile Kimmeridge Clay island which, at 85 feet above sea level, is the highest land in the fens. The beautiful cathedral, seen in the centre, was built by the Normans at the end of the 11th century. To the immediate right of the cathedral, facing Palace Green, is the former Bishops Palace which dates from the 15th century, while the timber-framed cottage on the right dates from the 16th century.

The Lancaster Canl dates from the 1790s and was originally intended to run from Kendal down towards Bolton. But it was never completed, and eventually the railways took over its intended task of supplying Lancaster with coal from the Yorkshire coalfields. These days, the canal is used purely for leisure purposes, and it runs from Tewitfield in the north of Lancashire down to Preston.

For Cambodians, water blessings are a sacred, spiritual experience; it is a traditional practice that dates back to ancient times and is performed in most of the pagodas across Cambodia. This kind of blessing involves vessels of blessed water being poured over your head while the monks chant. This ritual is believed to bring good luck and happiness.

Much of the interior of the Grade I-listed Church of St Mary the Virgin at Woodford in Northamptonshire dates from the 13th and 14th centuries. Construction of the church dates originally from the 12th century. There was a restoration in the 19th century when the chancel was reconstructed.

This building dates from 1746 although there had been a chapel on the site since 1662. 2 storeys red brick. Half-hipped tiled roof and eaves cornice. 3 cambered mullions and transoms. Wide doorcase with fluted pilasters containing 2 6-panel moulded doors with a pediment over. Gallery inside and contemporary pulpit.

Although the building looks plain, even severe, from the outside, the timber-framed interior is of considerable architectural interest. The painting on the wall by David Embry depicts the visit of Benjamin Franklin, one of the stalwarts of the American Declaration of Independence, who in 1774 is believed to have visited the Meeting House with his friend Joseph Priestley, the celebrated Unitarian minister and scientist who discovered the existence of oxygen as a constituent of the air. (Priestley was later obliged to flee to America because of his radical views.) If you get near enough to the painting you can read what is written on the hymn-book in the picture. The famous visit is commemorated by a plaque on the front of the church donated by the Tenterden Trust.

The market town of Saffron Walden sits in the Uttlesford district of Essex about 15 miles south of Cambridge.

The parish church of St Mary the Virgin dates mainly from the end of the 15th century, the church was struck and damaged by lightning in 1769, following this repairs carried out in the 1790s removed many medieval features. The 183 ft spire was added in 1832 to replace an older lantern tower.

We saw some of the best displays of the aurora borealis that I've ever seen on this year's Alaska Workshop! We just released dates for 2022 and are down to our last 2 spots. We teach our students that there are many different variables that can affect the strength of an auroral display. Many people concentrate on the Kp number, which ranges from 0 to 9 depending on the strength of the solar wind. But there are so many other variables that are equally if not more important. I took this shot on a night when the Kp registered at a lowly 1. But despite that, the aurora was so active and dancing all across the sky with different colors visible even to the naked eye! It was so active that I took this shot with a 12mm lens pointing straight up into the sky with a shutter speed of less than 1 sec! And yes, the white color is also real - it's not from overexposing. If you are interested in joining us next year for an adventure into the Arctic, make sure you book soon:

The major figure in reviving old enameling techniques in England was Alexander Fisher (1864-1936), who trained as a silversmith until inspired by French artisan Louis Dalpayrat with whom he studied. Fisher was an influential teacher and author on enameling, and his pieces are generally associated with the Arts & Crafts movement. He contributed to the art magazines of the time, such as Studio. He published his book in 1906: The Art of Enamelling upon Metal: with a Short Appendix Concerning Miniature Painting on Enamel; it’s available online at archive.org/details/artofenamellingu00fishuoft

His major work was a series of enameled plaques showing scenes from the operas of Richard Wagner. The plaque with two scenes from Tristan and Isolde dates from 1896 and is made of nickel silver, enamel and opals. An 1898 plaque with three figures is made of enamel and silver. Both are on display at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond

Achilla Millefolium - The name dates back to Greek Legend when Achillies upon the advice of Chiron applied Yarrow to his friends wound at the seige of troy to stop the bleeding. Yarrow is also a derivative of an Anglo Saxon Herb for "Healer" - it has a number of other names such as carpenters weed, soliders woundwort, nose bleed - all of which realate the plants ability to stop bleeding and also has antiseptic properties. In its history it has been used for magical potions and associated with the devil in the 16th and 17th centuries. It is also really good for dogs as it works in a simialr manner to humans. Anyway it is found in most fields and grasslands in the UK but it isnt well recognised anymore - anyway this is a plant I am growing in my garden.

The H. H. Simon and Jude Church is a Roman Catholic church in the town Ootmarsum Twente in the Dutch municipality of Dinkelland. The church is dedicated to the Apostles Simon and Jude Thaddaeus.

The H.H. Simon en Judas of Ootmarsum is the only example of a church in Westphalian Romanogothic style in The Netherlands. It largely dates from the 13th century. The original Romanesque tower was replaced by a new facade and a small wooden tower in 1842.

Katasraj temple is a Hindu temple situated in the Chakwal district of Punjab in Pakistan. Dedicated to Shiva, the temple has existed since the days of Mahābhārata and the Pandava brothers spent a substantial part of their exile at the site. The Pakistan Government is considering nominating the temple complex for World Heritage Site status. It also proposes to spend about Rs 20 million in three phases for the restoration of the complex.

Most of the temples, located some 40 km from the modern city of Chakwal in the Potohar region of northern Punjab in Pakistan, were built during the reign of Hindu kings. These several temples were built around 900 years ago or more, although the earliest of the Katasraj temples dates back to the latter half of the 6th century A.D. Scholars believe that most of the temples were actually constructed when the Shahi kingdom, driven from Afghanistan when their ethnic cousin Mahmud of Ghanavi came to power, fled to the region and set up base there.

The temple was abandoned by local Hindus when they migrated to East Punjab in 1947. It has always been the site of holy pilgrimage for people of various faiths. Even nowadays, worshippers from all faiths perform pilgrimages to the temple every year and bathe in the sacred pool around which Katasraj is built.

The Katas site houses the Satgraha, a group of seven ancient temples, remains of a Buddhist stupa, a few medieval temples, havelis and some recently constructed temples, scattered around a pond considered holy by Hindus. The temples at Katas are mostly constructed on square platforms. The elevation of the sub shrines seems to form a series of cornices with small rows of pillars, crowned by a ribbed dome.

The Ramachandra temple is situated to the east of the Hari Singh Haveli and is closed from all sides except for an entrance on the east. The double-storied structure has eight rooms of various dimensions on the ground floor and a staircase at the south leading to the first floor. The temple has two jharokas (balconies) that have been severely damaged.

The Hanuman temple is on the western extreme of a high rectangular enclosure with entrances on the south and the north. The temple's ceiling is undecorated, and lime-plastered. The Shiva temple is also built on a square platform. Its entrance is a recessed round arch with faint cusps and a rectangular opening to the north.

Katasraj temple complex is believed to date back to the Mahabharata era. There are stories about the Pandavas spending time there during their long exile. The lake in the complex is believed to have magical powers and supposed to be where Yudhisthira defeated the Yaksha with his wisdom to bring his brothers back to life.

This timber-framed building dates back to 1353 and is perhaps the most famous of all Thames-side pubs. The open timber work of the interior is impressive.

It isn't in the small village of Clifton Hampton itself, but just across the narrow, high-arched Victorian bridge that spans the River Thames that flows at the bottom of the pub’s grounds.

The Barley Mow was notably featured in chapter 18 of Jerome K. Jerome's 1889 novel Three Men in a Boat, a short novel of the humorous misadventures of three men and a dog taking a two weeks rowing holiday from Kingston upon Thames to Oxford and considered a minor English classic. It's style is surprisingly modern and is still an enjoyable read today:

"If you stay the night on land at Clifton, you cannot do better than put up at the "Barley Mow." It is, without exception, I should say, the quaintest, most old-world inn up the river. It stands on the right of the bridge, quite away from the village. Its low-pitched gables and thatched roof and latticed windows give it quite a story-book appearance, while inside it is even still more once-upon-a-timeyfied."
