Nelson House, Burnley
A Brief History of Nelson House,by Stephen D Gilliver
Nelson House was built in 1805. George III was King of England, William Pitt the Younger was Prime Minister and Europe was in the midst of the Napoleonic Wars. Admiral Horatio Nelson dashed Napoleon's plans in a naval battle at Cape Trafalgar off the Spanish coast on the 21st of October. Lord Nelson died as the foundations for Nelson House were prepared.
For the better part of the next sixty years, the property was the home of the Holgate family. The land on which it stands was part of the Pickop Farm that stood on the site now occupied by Greenhill Club in Manchester Road. From around 1400, the Tattersall family owned 69 acres that included Pickop Farm and an adjoining farm called Hoodhouse. The estate was divided and sold in the 17th century with the Halsteds of Bankhouse securing Pickop Farm, which, in 1729 was passed to the Halsteds of Rowley.
The earliest document concerning the building is a Deed of Covenant dated 3rd April 1806. This relates to the completion of the sale when Messrs. Lawrence and Nicholas Halsted, gentlemen, sold the land to Mr. John Holgate, merchant, for £309.00. Other documents dating from 1840 show that the property remained in the hands of the Holgate family until 1862 when the estate was broken up and sold at public auction. Nelson House passed into the hands of William Roberts, cotton spinner, of Thorney Holme in Pendle Forest, and other plots of land were sold to Thomas Sutcliffe of Brownhill, Burnley.
Planning permission was granted in June 1876 for the addition of billiard rooms, and the building became the home of the Liberal Reform Club for the next forty-seven years. Planning permission was granted in May 1894 for the erection of a new conservatory, and from about this time, until 1930, this was used as a dance hall and catered for balls, functions and private parties. For a time, the conservatory was the headquarters of the "Burnley Wheelers". The building became known as one of several "Assembly Rooms" which were situated throughout the town. The Club's tenancy continued until 1921 when the property was purchased by the Burnley Masonic Hall Company.
The Burnley Masonic Hall Company Limited was incorporated in November 1920. The first Masonic meeting at Nelson House was held at 7.00pm on Tuesday 9th January 1923 and took the form of a united meeting of the three Craft lodges that met in Burnley at that time. Nelson House has served as Burnley's Masonic Hall ever since.

Selection of a CXCR4-using variant above the 454 sequencing error threshold during persistent viremia suppression in Subject 26.Panel A, antiretroviral treatment history, virological and immunological evolution. Continuous line, HIV-1 RNA levels; dashed line, CD4+ counts; horizontal bars, time period during which a given antiretroviral drug was prescribed. Vertical lines indicate the timepoints when 454 sequencing was performed. LPVr, lopinavir/ritonavir; AZT, zidovudine; ddI, didanosine; RAL, raltegravir. Panel B, maximum likelihood nucleotide-based phylogenetic tree including V3-loop haplotypes present at a frequency ≥0.6% in the virus population in plasma (triangles), PBMCs before therapy initiation (circles) and PBMCs after persistent viremia suppression (squares). The tree is rooted at the most frequent plasma sequence before antiretroviral treatment initiation. Filled symbols show predicted CXCR4-using viruses; open symbols show predicted CCR5-using viruses. Symbol size increases proportionally to the V3-loop haplotype frequency in the virus population in 10% intervals. Node reliability was tested using 1000 bootstraps; bootstrap values ≥50% are shown. The V3-loop aminoacid sequence translation is shown next to each taxon. Aminoacid changes relative to the predominant sequence in plasma are highlighted in bold and underlined. Gaps correspond to aminoacid indeterminations. A Geno2Pheno [coreceptor] false positive rate (FPR) equal or lower than 10% was used to define CXCR4 use. The actual false positive rate of each sequence is shown. *Sequence #2 was identical to one detected in 0.04% of PBMC-associated viruses, below the error threshold, before treatment initiation.

We're alive.
Still trying to piece together what happened.
Not out of danger, yet.
More later.

Day: Sunday
Time: 04:11
Torrential rainstorm complete with thunder that's shaking the house and such violent, successive flashes of lightning that we can clearly make out the pale faces of the black-clad singers who are surrounding the house.
We've been filling Devon in on the madness that's been going on here, using the notes in my journal to flesh out the details. (Not my notes about the ghosts, of course, or my suspected mental breakdown. There'll be other times to deal-and-reveal if/when we get out.)
He and Ramirez are having a little brandy in front of the fire, in the study. I'm sitting at the desk, trying to figure out what actually happened in the clearing, and what I might have imagined.
At the moment the "minister" brought down the dagger to kill Devon, Ramirez fired.
His aim was off, and rather than hitting the minister in the chest, he hit him in the shoulder, not only throwing off his stroke, the head headcase actually stabbed himself in the thigh.
The singers, who were in full frenzy, screaming and chanting, stopped. They froze, in sound and motion, as if the scene had been put on 'pause,' with only the flickering candles and torches to prove it wasn't a still life. Devon continued to struggle in his bonds while the minister slowly turned his gaze from his bleeding thigh, upward, to the "bulge" in the sky overhead.
I dashed between the still singers, butcher knife drawn, telling Ramirez to "cover me" in wonderfully TV cop drama style, Devon looked shocked to see me. Hell, I knew how he felt. I was shocked to be doing what I was doing.
I sawed frantically through the ropes binding his feet, totally ignoring his safety, so he was lucky I didn't take off a foot. I dragged him off the altar stone, leaving his bound hands for later, if there was a later, and shoved him back the way I'd come, between the still-immobile crowd. The minister's scream stopped me in my tracks, and I looked back.
The bulge in the sky -- reached for him. Imagine that clear balloon suddenly sprouting a dozen clear arms. No, not arms, tentacles I guess. That's closer, yeah. He screamed, but he didn't try to escape. He seemed transfixed, staring up at the bulge with wide, bugging eyes, and I could see a dark spot "opening" in the middle of the bulge.
Ramirez yelled for me and Devon to get our asses out of there, but I saw a book fall from the minister's billowing coat, and I HAD to go back for it.
Devon and Ramirez have no idea what I meant when I told them I had to go back for the book. They think I meant that I couldn't resist because of my curiosity, or something, and I'm happy to let them think that because what I really meant only points toward my suspected insanity.
When I say I had to go back for the book, I mean that my body suddenly stopped responding to what I wanted it to do. I stopped, turned, and ran back between the statue-like throng. Back to the altar where the minister was screaming in one long, thin, high note, reminding me of a tea kettle left to long on the boil.
I didn't look up from where I knelt at the base of the altar stone, my fingers closing on the warm, leathery hide of the fallen book. I think I could have, it was only my arms and legs that seemed bent on rebellion, but I thought it might be very bad for me to look up, into that opening in the bulge -- to see into that place where the tentacles were dragging the minister.
Once my fingers were securely upon the book, I could feel control over my body return to me. I turned to run, but a hand closed around my wrist, stopping me. I raised my eyes to discover that my captor was the hooded figure! I couldn't see beyond the shadows of the hood, and I felt unreasonably grateful for that inability. I didn't want to know what it was.
I mean who it was, don't I?
No. No, I don't.
There was no accompanying pain in the grip. Pain wasn't required, because the power in the hand that held me was so much greater than mine that struggling had absolutely no effect.
As the iron grip began to pull me closer to the shape, I distantly heard a shot, and the grip released. The head of the hooded figure jerked, a guttural grunt emerging from the shadows of the hood. The moment I was released, I ran. The crowd began to stir as the minister's wail faltered, changed, became a series of ragged, agonized shrieks.
When I reached Ramirez and Devon, we made for the house as fast as we could, using the overgrown trail and going back to the window through which we'd originally crawled out, hoping the throng would take the better-travelled path and go to the doors, which they did. And that is how we got back inside and, eventually, once we were assured they couldn't break in, were back in the study having brandy and telling Devon everything we'd been through.
The journal is another one belonging to the doctor, all in Latin, so Ramirez is studying it and telling us what he's learning, while we wait for the rescue party Gary will send back for us.
05:48
And I thought I was losing touch with reality?
If the other things we've read made us question the sanity of the people who used to live in this house, THIS journal just confirms it.
The maid was responsible for bringing the minister and his rabid flock to the estate, but the doctor was responsible for bringing them to their new "god." Not just the, whatever it is that causes the air to bulge, but the deformed child as well.
The child is alternately called a demon, or the son of a god, but what kind of "god?" Apparently, the same flock was convinced, by the same sort of activities we'd so recently witnessed, to believe the doctor had a direct pipeline to the fearsome, wrathful god they'd been so devoutly worshiping all along, and that the child was a son of that same god.
I have a feeling that there was more than mass hysteria going on, since the doctor was using chemicals to control the monstrous child, and there was an incredible volume of communion wine being imbibed. It would have been easy enough for him to dose the entire flock, maybe even causing them to hallucinate.
Hi first act, to convince them of his power, and his direct connection to this savage god, was to sacrifice the original minister for being a heretic because, predictably, the minister decried the doctor's excessively warped version of god.
Unfortunately, whatever it was that the doctor could summon, IT could respond, and it did, consuming the minister before the awed and terrified eyes of his congregation. The doctor's status was assured after that, and sacrificing "heretics," and the "unworthy," and the "unbelievers" became a frequent function until -- hell, now? Still?
Well, that certainly explains some things, and if we were worried before, we're freaking terrified for our souls, now! More brandy might help.
This purge of the "faithless" must have continued until only the most fervent believers remained in the town, and local vicinity. Sickeningly, there was more; every female member/mental case who could become pregnant was duty-bound to give herself to the "son of god," the deformed child (by the time of what Ramirez is reading, a teenager), in order for him to -- this is a quote -- "sanctify her womb with his holy seed." Gross.
So, I'm feeling queasy, but what else does it mean? Back then, they had a handful of drug-and-religion-addled fanatics running amok and breeding a congregation. A congregation of -- what?
What the hell is out there, and how do we --
06:15
The fog is back. The rainstorm just stopped. We can't see them, but we have to assume the singers, the black-clad worshipers of -- whatever, are still out there ... watching.
Someone else is going to have to get us out of here, because I don't think we're getting out on our own.
08:03
Damn it, I dozed off. And while I slept, Devon went through this journal.
He was deeply hurt that I ever suspected him of being involved in this madness, though I pointed out to him that I later absolved him. He was also concerned about MY concern regarding the stability of my mind. He's watching me right now, as I write this, having demanded that I show him the room where I think I heard and saw the "ghosts." I'm going to take him up there now.
09:47
I'm not sure how I should explain what happened when I took Devon up to the collectible room.
Hysteria? Maybe the power of suggestion?
I mean, it's not possible for Devon to have gone off his rocker in the same way as I did, but could he have been influenced into seeing what I did after reading my journal? Still, that doesn't explain why he saw and heard the same things I did, this time, because they were different from the previous "vision," or whatever it was.
Ramirez assured us he'd be safe enough in the study. In fact, he was more concerned about me and Devon wandering around in the house, but we were relatively sure of our security, and planned a super quick trip, with no "wandering" per se.
It didn't turn out to be as quick as anticipated.
Devon's having another brandy, to steady his nerves, while I write these notes.
We got up to the storage room, and with Devon there, I was feeling pretty silly about what I'd imagined seeing and hearing -- until the whispering began again, and Devon's the one who alerted ME to it, not the other way around.
The same man and woman were whispering, but this time, the man said he knew how to put an end to the evil on the estate. He said it meant he'd have to kill her son at a key moment during the sacrifice. That's what Devon and I stepped out of hiding, and both of us clearly saw a woman and man clad in period costumes, turn toward us. (Let me make a quick note, here, that I saw the Native American man held a bone club in one hand that looked similar to the one previously discovered by Ramirez and I, though the one he held looked to be in pristine condition.)
The oddest thing was that, once again, I could swear they caught a glimpse of us, in the split second before they "weren't there" anymore. Before rushing back to Ramirez, I took an extra moment to locate the bone club, taking it back with us. Devon's telling the whole story to Ramirez, and he's looking through the journals for any reference to the club.

Chatwick Harpax I'm glad you're liking it. (I totes meant to have more today, but when my friends showed up for the shoot I discovered that my neighbor set up some snow emitters...and they're emitting across the backyard, through the whole house, all the way past my front porch! I immed her, politely asking that she relocate them so they don't encroach, but it put the installment shoot on hold.)

Lets hear it for the brandy mates, nothing like a stiff drink after defeating an antagonist. So we can all assume the hooded chappie was not a friend like our young lad was hoping?
Cannot wait for the next installment, excellent bit of storytelling!

The fog could just be a result of all the Brandy that is being consumed, lol . Liking the atmosphere you're building up here lass, black shapes in the mist sounds rather sinister. I think I'll toddle if for a snifter to soak up the full effect . Cheerio until the next install

I escaped from work on Saturday morning and dashed across to Healey House to try and Catch John Myers four motors on their way to join the Meltham War Weekend parade. I got there with a minute to spare, unfortunately, as on a previous occasion, it was difficult to catch the old motors without modern ones stuck between or behind the slow moving wagons. Having got what I could I drove in to Meltham and wandered around taking photos until the parade at 12.30. I ended up staying until 3.00-still in my filthy work clothes. The original plan was to go home and change but I'd got myself a handy parking place and due to my dodgy ankle not lending itself to walking far I decided to stay put. It was very dull until around 1.00 and then someone switched the sun on and it was a glorious afternoon. It certainly seemed to be very busy, it deserved to be as there was an awful lot going on, obviously a lot of hard work behind it so well done to the organisers. I took around 300 shots and I will upload in batches as I have time, at the time of writing (Fri) they are all edited.
On Friday, February 7, 2014, high school and middle school students dashed into the icy Atlantic as part of Special Olympics Virginia’s largest fundraiser: The Polar Plunge and the Cool School Challenge.
“Raising one million dollars for the fourth year in a row is incredible,” said Rick Jeffrey, Special Olympics Virginia president. “More importantly, though, these funds will help us to build bigger, better, more inclusive communities across the state of Virginia.”
In addition to the money raised, they got to take the icy dip into the Atlantic, all while earning a Friday “pass” from school, earn community service credit, Costume contests – prizes for best dressed male and female, prizes for teacher or team sponsor, and freezing photos.

As I went for my walk this afternoon it started raining just as I walked out the door, so instead of turning around I dashed over to the Britomart Trainstation (which is underground) so I could walk to my heart's content without getting wet :-) I have worked out a circuit - which involves lots of stairs - and managed to do 3500 steps - not quite 10 000 - but better than nothing.....
Any case - as I came down the stairs I noticed this girl and her friends (below) just before they got on the train. As I walked passed the train she was sitting like this waving to her friend outside - so I quickly pointed my camera and managed two stolen shots......unfortunately I cut the top bit of the window off - and the ligths inside the train blew out the top of her ears - but I still like the candid snap I managed :-)

Karen Abu Zayd, the Head of the UN Agency that provides food, health and housing to millions of Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) was at the European Parliament Thursday (11 September). She was there to hold talks with Members of the Foreign Affairs Committee. In an exclusive interview she told us that 60 years of refugees status for the Palestinians is nothing to celebrate, of her concern over Israeli settlements and that "periods of hope...have all been dashed and things have got worse".

As I sat at my desk, trying desperately to convince my wayward mind that I in fact really did want to be doing my assignment, my eyes came to rest on a picture of an iMac that hung from my cork board reminding me of the sweet days that would soon be upon me, and any chances of concentrating on something that was not an iMac, were dashed.
My visions of 24” screens, Quad Core 3.2GHz Intel Xeon Processors and sleek packaging that draws me close to weeping with anticipation, were blinded by a startling solution. Not only could I get out of my hot box of a room, and the guilt that follows me around the house whispering softly in my ear every time I sit down to watch an episode of the Amazing Race, but I could also be doing something directly related to my education thus silencing my guilt completely. I jumped onto the Internet with a speed that normally accompanies the arrival of a new DVD in the mail, and found that there was a free Art Show in Fremantle, on which I could base my shortly due Critical Analysis on. I felt a sense of accomplishment usually reserved for after I finish cleaning the house, and proceeded to rifle through my closet trying to find an outfit most closely resembling that of a young, funky yet slightly nerdy art critic.
Putting aside my disappointment at finding a closet full of jeans and t-shirts, I headed towards Fremantle with a smile on my face and Traveling Wilbury’s in my ears.
As my first 30 minutes at the Art Centre passed with only displays of old Merry-go-Round horses and examples of the cells in the old insane asylum in sight, I began to wonder if I had in fact come to the wrong place. The plethora of old people wandering the grounds seemed to confirm my concerns as I expected to be girt by appropriately dressed, young, arty, Fremantlians. Although I was pleased to be the best looking person there, the lack of an art show ate at me like a flesh eating bug. I wandered the grounds trying wretchedly to look like I belonged and wasn’t in fact lost and finally stumbled upon the exhibit I was looking for, that was tucked away right at the back, unsigned and so vague in it’s actual location that I thought they must have done it on purpose to make it more creative. Or to drive off the stupid people, as their displays were so mind blowingly interesting that it was only safe for intelligent people to view. As I found the majority neither mind-blowing or particularly that interesting, my thoughts were filled with worry that I wasn’t as smart as I professed to be, as I sauntered back to the car, finding the outside surrounds far more engaging than the exhibit itself.
My thoughts swiftly turned to food, as I realised how hungry I was. As my blood sugar dropped, my thoughts turned more often to orange juice, jellybeans and hash browns and before I knew it, I was indicating and pulling into my old favourite hangout, the local organic store. Now when one is working full time and earning a decent wage they can be forgiven for indulging in expensive organic produce, but the knowledge that I am now a poor student loomed over me as I tentatively entered the store, wondering if I would set off the ‘poor people’ alarm. The silence and lack of security guards tackling me to the ground shouting, “Can you afford to be here Miss!!” set me at ease and a comforting fondness palliated my tense demeanor. After completing my initial circuit of the store I reviewed my purchases and calculated roughly that to pay for what I had stashed in my basket, I would have to somehow get pregnant, give birth and sell my child on the black market, all in the next 5 minutes, before the old Nonna in front of me finished unloading her San Pellegrino and Pasta Lensi. I again used my superior math’s skills to calculate the odds of accomplishing that feat and my answer caused me to return all but three essential items in my basket. I progressed through the checkout with my drastically desolate purchases and was surprised that I found myself cringing at the exorbitant total as I was quite aware when I entered that I would be using up a weeks worth of icy pole money.
I traveled home, munching on my bio-organic licorice rope and sipping my organic fat-free choc milk, whilst Rod Stewarts voice skipped from the back to the front speakers every time I went over a bump in the road. I opened the window and with my mouth full of licorice, exclaimed to the world “Bring over some of your old Motown records”

Heading up Church Street in Beaumaris (off Castle Street). For a late afternoon explore of the town centre.
George & Dragon public house.
Grade II* Listed Building
History
Probably built in 1610, the date (now concealed) recorded on a roof truss in the 1930s, and originally timber-framed with jettied upper storey. The George & Dragon is shown on the 1829 town plan and 1889 Ordnance Survey with a house and shop immediately to the S which has now been incorporated into the public house. The present front is a C20 remodelling subsequent to the amalgamation of the 2 properties, when the upper storey was under-built, with later alteration.
Exterior
A 2-storey public house, with a neo-Georgian style front of pebble-dashed walls with smooth-rendered architraves and upper-storey sill band, slate roof, roughcast stack L of centre and 2 tall stone stacks to the rear. In the 6-window front, the lower storey has a 12-pane hornless sash window to the L end, then a modern door, a segmental-headed, studded cellar door with small window above it, two 12-pane hornless sashes, a doorway with panel door and glazed panels, a tripartite 12-pane horned sash window and boarded door at the R end. Between storeys is a rendered inscription band with raised letters and the date 1410. In the upper storey are 4-pane horned sashes, unequally placed and including a tripartite window at the R end.
Additions have been made to the rear, on the R of which is a C17 or C18 kitchen.
Interior
The lower storey has been modernised but retains cross beams and timber-framed partitions, one with exposed wattle, in the lower storey. One of the brackets that formerly supported the upper storey has also survived. The lateral fireplace on the R side survives partially, and has a timber lintel under a moulded cornice. The L gable end has a later, plainer but larger fireplace with stop-chamfered lintel.
In the upper storey, at the N end, is an arched-brace truss on a wooden bracket, and 2 timber-framed partitions, and cusped wind braces. One of the partitions, the gable end of the original building, has herringbone struts in the gable. The other partition retains fragments of wall painting, including 2 horned devils in a roundel to the R side, and a cross with bleeding heart beneath the apex. Below a beam bears the restored inscription 'PAX DEUS VOBIS REQUIE DEFUGE DEUS PROVIDEBIT ...'.
Reasons for Listing
Listed grade II* for its exceptional interest as an early C17 house with later modification and alteration to a public house, with especially fine C17 interior detail.

Last night I finally saw the show. Mak Yong – Titis Sakti was amazing!
Based on Shakespeare’s Midsummer Nights Dream, the dance musical had buatiful dances, amazing charecterisation and provided such humour. We laughed our heads off.
I loved the crowds reaction and interaction, the casts improvisation at times to the live show. There was one point one of the cast members accidentally laughed when she was supposed to be frozen, and immediately one of them exclaimed “eh power tak cukup ni” “eh my magics power is not enough”! Or at the beginning when someones phone rang and they made a snide remark on that.
I had so many favourites – the absolute favourties were the 2 comedian palace helpers (jester?), Cempaka Sari’s father, cempaka sari (the heroine), titis sakti,
The father was going around the audience asking for his daughter, and at one point started asking me in English “you see my daughter?” I said NO “Oh no you didn’t!” lol
I was wondering earlier why I was being flashed with a red light and I guess I was picked to answer.
The musics awesome, the relevance to current times comedy, the use of handphones and the right scenes for the adaption really worked. Eventhough its in a thick kelantanese slang, I could understand most of it!

Temmo the Puppy going nuts trying to debug a squirrel on our rain walk earlier today. Half a second before shooting this, had perfect squirrel face close-up lined up, but it dashed to other side of pole at last instant.
Langdon and Vittoria dashed to the main entrance of the church of Santa Maria deVittoria and found the wooden door locked.
The short dashed line on this scan alongside Grove Green Road between Leyton and Leytonstone sits largely on the line of today's A12. In the original plan for London's Ringways it would've been an enormous and destructive scheme to drive the M11 and parallel Eastern Avenue into central London. Also shown on the map is the proposed north-eastern section of Ringway 2, today's A406. Taken from a Texaco Route Map of Greater London from 1971.

Friday evening felt like the first proper midsummer evening in ages. Dashed out to this spot five minutes from home to try and catch the late evening light.
Like the way the light plays on the wheat.
Will need to return when the wheat is ripe for the full effect...

An event in commemoration of World AIDS Day, in which runners dashed up and down the Stone Arch Bridge in red underwear in the midst of a blizzard.
I was literally sat drinking coffee, in my pyjamas, when I noticed the amazing sky outside. I hurried to get dressed, dashed out the front door and quickly assembled my camera, tripod and filters to fire off a few shots before the colours faded away. I tweeted the photo, and was then contacted by BBC Wiltshire and Ian Fergusson (presents the local weather) complimenting me. Shortly after, BBC Points West featured the photo as the backdrop during their regional weather broadcast!

Ivy dashed through the snow but fell in a heap,
The icy embrace left her cold, head to feet.

Winter may bite, but she’ll keep spirits high.

The second part of the grand tiger tour, this part at Pench NP.
Any hope we had of a lay in were dashed that wheels was at quarter to six, but if you were up even earlier, there was free coffee.
We made it up for the tour and coffee, so we climbed onto the jeep and made ready for the trip to the main gate.
Already the jeeps here were slightly smaller, and that would become an issue when the safety bars would dig into my knees, and there would be no comfortable position to sit.
But that is for later.
Pench felt different, dryer, more spaced out. I mean the trees were, so we drove for half an hour with seeing only a distant Jackal.
Unlike the previous park, there is no communication between vehicles allowed, so there is less crowding of the animals which is much better, but means you might miss seeing something.
We saw a distant male tiger first, then rumours began of a Leopard.
So, off we went.
Somehow, a guide had spotted it at over 100m, lazing on a tree, so we got some distant shots. But then it climbed down, disappeared for a bit, but was then discovered sunbathing on a rocky outcrop, washing slowly.
We stayed ages, but time was getting away, so we drive the half hour to the safe area for a packed breakfast.
You might remember me saying out the interior space of the jeeps here is not so good as in Tadoba, well, three and a half hours of my knees being squashed against a rill bar, and also they being stuck at an acute angle meant they hurt.
As we had had a late breakfast, all that was left really was to drive slowly back to the main gate as our permit had expired.
It was hot, though we were not to know it, literal storm clouds were building. I spent half an hour chasing butterflies outside our cabin.
I told the tour leader over lunch that I would be bailing on the afternoon tour, as I could not face sitting in such cramped conditions again.
That having been said, I got an internet voucher and spent the afternoon uploading images and cut & pasting posts to go with them, then listen to a podcast.
Jools left for the tour at half three, and soon after, the storm arrived.
Claps of thunder, rain, though not much, and gusty winds had chased the butterflies away I wanted to chase, so lay on the bed.
Then in the bed.
And then snoozed.
Then came the first of multiple power cuts. Lights went out. Internet went out. And when the power came back, the internet didn't.
It was almost dark, and in the middle of another power cut when Jools came back. They had seen nothing new, but two more Leopards.
Dinner was the usual buffet, but the beer was welcome, even when the power went out, and two dozen candles lit the restaurant.
As I stepped out of the shower this morning my wife said, "There's a buck out on our path to the lake." I grabbed my camera — still mostly undressed — and walked out onto the deck. This caught the deer's attention and he dashed. But here, he paused and turned, wondering, "Did I really see that?" Then away he ran.
I told Oyet the moment I stepped into San Francisco that I must see the silver bridge printed on so many maroon colored notebooks of my childhood. A foggy weather dashed our first try. It rained on our second and final attempt but I was so determined even a hurricane won't stop me. We reached the bridge drenched by the chilly drizzle. Then the rain stopped as I started shooting...
The Golden Gate after which this suspension bridge was named is actually a strait connecting San Francisco Bay to the Pacific Ocean. Fogs hid the strait from early explorers until it was "discovered" in 1769. The crew of the Spanish ship San Carlos became the first known Europeans to pass the strait in 1775 which until the 1840s is known as the Boca del Puerto de San Francisco. It became known as the Golden Gate in 1846 just before the great California gold rush which is perhaps attributed to John Fremont who wrote in his memoirs "To this gate I give the name of Chrysopylae or Golden Gate..."
The Golden Gate Bridge was started to be constructed in 1933 and was the longest suspension bridge span in the world when it was completed in 1937. It is today one of the most photographed bridges in the world, an iconic symbol not only of San Francisco but the whole United States, and unfortunately the most popular place to commit suicide in the entire world (Wikipedia, December 2010).
