Barn Swallow feeding fledgling
(Boardwalk, JE Poole Wetland, St. Albert, Alberta)
The parent bird dashed in and out so quickly that it's hard to see how it delivered the food into an open mouth.

It's been several years since I was able to take advantage of a snow covered city for doing photography. The last few Winters have given us milder temperatures and've been almost completely snowless. This year we've been having a lot so I've made a commitment to get as many Winter shots in as I can as there just aren't that many in my portfolio.
We had a heavy snowfall and when I got up and when I saw that it was still happening, I jumped to it, got dressed quickly and dashed out the door, iPhone at the ready.
It's a wholly different beast shooting with a lot of snow around. The camera reads it as very bright and compensates for the tremendous amount of reflective "bounce" that's saturating the air with light. With muted, cloudy skies this tends to bleach out all the colour from the world and leave only basic earth tones and varying blacks and whites.
So in processing this I decided to keep that almost monochrome feeling but emphasizing how much this red brick house stands out on a muted, grayed-out, snowy day. I eliminated all the other colour except for red and added a hint of "ancient text" texturing for a softer touch.

I hope everyone's weekend is wonderful and in full on happy mode! It has been stormy in Georgia today. Here in SL, I am off to a bougie soiree, but before heading out, I dashed through the farm's guest cottage kitchen where I stash my peach vodka to grab a few bottles to get me through the night. Introvert/lush/I'd rather stay home coping mechanism.
And the guest kitchen has been newly glamourized with gleaming coppery beauty thanks to gems from my dear friend Bambi's nostalgic kitchen collection! It adds the perfect elegant mixed with rustic touch, and I so love this gleaming copper! Bambi is such a brilliant whirlwind of landscaping, decor and everything in between creativity, and is truly all around wonderful, generous and kind on top of that. Her Melody sims and her Oh Deer shop are must visits in the SL realms! 💖
Sending everyone lots of love! xoxo 💕🍷
On this morning, my hopes were dashed for a wonderous Summer sunrise. Dashed by the dark storm marching over the river to invade the marsh. I found the form and symmetry interesting on this morning along with dappled tones in the water. I chose to preserve the feel of ripples in the water as the breeze moved inward.
I once had dreams of becoming a beautiful poet
But upon an unfortunate series of events
Saw those dreams dashed and divided like a million stars in
the night sky
I was always an unusual girl
My mother told me that I had a chameleon soul
No moral compass pointing me due north
No fixed personality
Just an inner indecisiveness that was as wide and as
wavering as the ocean
I am alone in midnight
Been trying hard not to get into trouble, but I
I've got a war in my mind
I just ride
Who are you?
Are you in touch with all of your darkest fantasies?
Have you created a life for yourself where you can
experience them?

EXPLORE #185 October 12, 2008 Thanks gr8fl89, Kassel and bombthebase70 for the news!
Yesterday was a cloudy day. It rained a bit. The sky was colorless. Not a great day for taking pictures. I heard something rustling in my apple tree and looked up to see a squirrel trying to pick an apple. The squirrel froze for just a second when he saw me, then dashed away with his apple in his mouth. Amazing to watch them pulling at apples with their hands. I don't know how the squirrels manage not to fall from the tree!
I got lucky with these. I called in on my way to Howden for Crossbills, saw a few Hawfinch, decided to unpack the camera and stayed but got nothing. www.flickr.com/photos/johndickenson/ caught some nice looking shots early on in great light around the same time in a different tree, we stuck around for about 3 hours with no further joy. John left, I was about to go and was packed away, when I saw some guys obviously photographing something in another part of the churchyard.
I went back and there they were. So dashed back, unpacked the gear again and set up, in time to catch about the last 5 minutes of the action. Not great light, but they were close enough for it not to matter too much, though got a good few with motion blur due to compromise between shutter speed and ISO. Dead jammy really!
Never made it to Howden!
Thank you everyone for the faves and comments on this and previous photos - they are appreciated. My apologies if I haven't looked at your pics this last few days, not been well, the M.E. again.

I got to work Monday morning, dashed around back hoping to find some fog lingering over the lake. Instead, found this...
Hope your weekend kicks off in full colour :)
As we drove along the roads adjacent to Iguassu Falls, NP, suddenly, a troop of Capuchin monkeys dashed across the road in front of us. I was able to get a few shots before they all vanished in the dense forest.
The Milky Way rises over Saddlerock Lake, in the Eastern Sierra Nevada.
I took this shot at Saddlerock Lake just below Bishop Pass in the Eastern Sierras. My hopes had been dashed for grabbing a reflection of the Milky Way on the lake at around sunset when the wind started picking up and continued throughout the evening. Despite the harsh winds I managed to find a spot next to this semi-petrified tree stump that would be relatively unaffected by the wind and still include the lake.
Thanks for taking the time to take a look at my photos, and as always, your views, comments, faves, and support are greatly appreciated!!
Have a great weekend my friends!! :)
If you have any questions about this photo or about photography in general, I will do my best to help, just post a comment or send me a Flickr mail and I will respond as quickly as possible.

Morning light, Chugach State Park, Alaska
One of the upsides of visiting Alaska in the winter is that there is no rush to be up early for sunrise. One can enjoy plenty of time for breakfast and a leisurely cup of coffee while waiting for the first light to creep over the mountains. Most of the mornings I was there it was too cloudy to see any color in the sky, but the last day made up for all the other ones!
I was finishing up packing for our departure and as I glanced out the window I saw the aptly named Mount Alpenglow bathed in fiery shades of pink. So I grabbed my camera, threw on my boots and coat and dashed outside. In every direction were mountains aglow with light and color and I hardly knew where to look because I did not want to miss a single moment of it.
In my haste to get outside I had forgotten my gloves, so taking photos in the 10 degrees F/ -12 degrees C temperature resulted in some frozen fingers, but it was well worth the cold. (I also forgot to bring my phone with me with my PeakFinder app, so I am not certain of the names of these specific peaks.)
P.S. Unfortunately I realized once outside that the best and least obstructed view of Mount Alpenglow was actually from my room window. So I did not get any good shots of it. But if you want to see what caught my attention, I have included a photo of the colors through the trees in the first comment below.
Late afternoon I suddenly realised there was a chance of a sunset so dashed down to the beach. There wasn't much wet sand to play with, and all the clouds were up channel away from the sun. For some reason they were all quite vertical so made these quite beautiful patterns. The sky never seems to disappoint. It had a dreamlike quality, so Martha's Dream by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis is perfect.
Work commitments have been such that I've not had the time to up load this from yesterday morning. Had dashed out the house, saw this turned on my heels got the camera, 4 quick shots jumped in the car off to work. Finally tonight catching my breath ...

Yesterday was my first outing with the camera in 2018, and what a spectacular trip it was....
This is mountain photography at it's finest! I had just about every weather phenomenon thrown at me, from howling winds to whiteout blizzards and glorious sunshine to heavy showers. But that's what mountain photography is all about for me. Braving the elements and hopefully coming back with something special at the end of it, which luckily happened on this outing.
The weather was so changeable that I managed to get a handful of images on the round trip which look like totally different days. After a severe snowstorm where I could hardly see 10 paces in front of me, the visibility improved suddenly and I noticed the late evening winter sun was setting in a gap on the horizon, so I dashed to this viewpoint to capture it over the lake of Wast Water.
So here it is. My first sunset of 2018, and hopefully many more to follow throughout the year......
I dashed off down the coast this morning, driving through freezing fog and a cold grey day. When I arrived at the coast I was greeted by sweeping fog banks pouring over the cliffs. The pictures never do this amazing scene justice, and this is close , but nowhere near as impressive and beautiful as it was to just be there. Lost in this world is a beautiful track by Richmond Fontaine, and is a perfect title, as on my beach stroll, I could hardly see the cliffs.
While driving through the preserve, I spotted these two lizards catching some sun on a tree branch. They stayed still long enough for me to snap a quick photo, but they dashed away before I could get another!
(If anyone can help identify I would greatly appreciate it! I believe the one on the left is a broad-headed skink).

As the sun fell on this mid- October day so did the hopes of continuing the season. It is amazing how the small disappointments build the most character.
Dashed out with nearest camera last night. The rain had paused and sun lighted the trees with remaining deciduous leaves.
Took this shot and the sunlight dimmed. By the time I was indoors, the sunset began again, and my husband ran out to capture that.
As shot from RAW. Mostly. You can see that I do not do landscapes. The shutter speed was too low and still set on spot metering ;-)
But I adore seeing your photos.

H-NTWGAL pops out of the tunnel on Main 1 at Westminster. Everyones hopes were dashed for a nice chase down the river when they had to pick up 39 cars in Bluff Yard from the previous days H-NTWGAL.
In my previous post I showed the Greater spotted woodpecker seeing off Starlings at breakfast time.
Today it came as I was starting my breakfast and the woodpecker became breakfast for the Sparrowhawk!
Tried hard not to burn my toast under the grill as I dashed upstairs to get the camera and change the lens.
Taken through the patio door.
I was going to upload some more puffin shots but time has got away with me so no time to edit them. Instead a shot taken last weekend at Bracelet Bay , Mumbles. It is supposed to be summer here but gales and rain for most of the weekend. I dashed out in a brief dry slot to get some rough sea shots.
The very first shot I took after we arrived in the Lake District this time. Realising we had got to Windermere just before sunset, we dashed up Orrest Head where there were quite a few sunset worshippers and other togs. The view is of lake Windermere and the western fells again.
Happy Bench Monday!
Got up this morning to a new blanket of snow, HOORAY! Dashed out before it got trampled and yellowed 😂 I managed 2 hours traipsing round the local area before my hands went numb.
Happy Sunday. 😍
Each year in April a charcoal burner gets invited into my hometown by local authorities. This is keeping in line with a long standing tradition of burning of wood and subsequently making charcoal in a nearby safe part of the forest.
A few years back I went to see the customary procedure in the wee hours of the morning. The charcoal burner has to get up every couple of hours to watch the process of burning. He usually sleeps in a self-built wooden shack close to mother nature´s ground. Unbekownst to me, but guessing, the fiery German Schnaps, he surely liked, made it difficult for him to wake up on time.
The moment I arrived the huge heap of wood was burning at full blast. No charcoal can be made in this manner. Important is an even carbonization at a low temperature, a die away and charring. All fluid and gaseous combustion products need detracting. So I dashed to his shack and immediately woke him up. A minute later I photographed him hastily working, whilst listening to his mumbling.
A phone call from the wife on her way to Barton Upon Humber, alerted me to the above scene, to which I then dashed out with camera in tow. In this particular shot you can see the bridge road deck, which kept disappearing into the mist. Also visible are some birds just below the tower, flying in front of the mist, which was limited to the river area itself.
Hag's Head is the name given to the most southerly point of the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare, Ireland, where the cliffs form an unusual rock formation that resembles a woman's head looking out to sea. It provides a vantage point over much of the cliff formation.
A local legend relates how an old hag or sea-witch, Mal of Malbay, fell in love with the Irish hero, Cú Chulainn and chased her would-be suitor across Ireland.[1] Cú Chulainn escaped by hopping across sea stacks as if they were stepping stones. Mal, however, not being so nimble lost her footing and was dashed against the rocks.
Hello Everyone!
Mother Nature treated Winnipeg to hoar frost one morning, so out I dashed with my macro lens. I found some milkweed seed pods that were all dressed up in their frosted finery!
Thanks a million for stopping by and for leaving a comment. I love hearing from you! Have a wonderful day!

While staying near Hilo, Hawaii, I dashed outside after a rain shower. I didn't expect to see small flowers with faces. They looked a bit cranky, so my encounter with them was brief.
Please forgive my excitement for having seen this male Comma in the garden today! It was unseasonably warm enough to sit out for a bit today and along came this beauty and stayed while I dashed for the macro lens 😊!!
It isn't the shot I intended for this weeks theme but as it gave a February 'lift' to me, I hope it does you too!!

Delicious fog this morning so I bundled up and dashed out quickly in spite of a bad cold and cough I picked up recently. Then back home for hot tea and rest.
Saw sun glinting on frost and dashed outside for a belly shot!

Joy (and bokeh balls) and Chinese lanterns (physalis) in the morning! Thanks for looking.
I had big plans to look for rare gulls or wintering sea ducks along the Lake Superior shoreline on this very cold clear day, but alas, those hopes were dashed by all this ice! When life throws you a lemon, make lemonade, they say. I hope you enjoy this sunrise shot at Canal Park, the very same place I used to cool my legs in the lake after running Grandma's Marathon many years ago.
The light broke through the clouds really nicely and lit up the heads of wheat causing them to almost glow yellow. I dashed up the farmers track (being careful not to damage any crops at all) and caught this. I liked the balance between the left side tree full of leaves and the right being barren. Thought it worked okay overall
One of the challenges of photographing a feeding reddish egret is you never know where they are going to dart next. This one quickly flew up and away for a short distance, plopped down and dashed off in seemingly three directions at once. They definitely keep you on your toes!
Thanks to all who spend the time to view, like or comment on my photos! It is much appreciated!

I went to the beach on a not-so-great weather day. On the way to the beach, I saw a gorgeous sky at dawn. I stopped my car and took a couple of pictures. They turned out not great. The sky and fields were black-crushed. By the time I arrived at the beach, the sun had already risen. I cut across grass thick with dew. It was sparkling under the weak sunlight. I wanted to shoot the dew but dashed to the beach because the sun looked like it was about to disappear.
There was a clear sky just above the horizon. The rest of the atmosphere was covered by thick clouds. I barely had time to take a photo of the sunrise. A moment after, the sun was completely hidden by the clouds. The line on the water surface was impressive.
Taken at 6:12 a.m.
While helping out in a friends garden down in Sussex, I spotted this little caterpillar very much in danger of getting stepped on, so I rescued it. My gardening work was forgotten as I dashed to find my camera and macro lens. Despite me having saved it from likely death by squish, it proved to be a most uncooperative subject, very reluctant to hold still to have its picture taken.
Maneuvering it into a suitable position for the head-on shot I wanted proved tricky - I wanted to avoid direct contact to prevent harming the caterpillar and didn't want to touch its tiny hairs which I expected could be irritating. This beautiful face belongs to the caterpillar of the Buff-tip moth, Phalera bucephala.
No caterpillars were harmed in the making of this photograph. When I was finished, it was allowed to crawl to safety underneath a courgette plant.
Rain had been falling all day, but once there was pause, I dashed outside with my camera. I was so pleased to find these tiny raindrops balanced on the edge of a flower petal. I just love precipitation! "Some people walk in the rain, others just get wet."

Yes, I get to carry the bags, do the washing up, tidy rooms, etc, at the B&B but when the view looks like this, who cares? My daughter and wife thought it suspicious that I dashed out late to deliver some shopping to Strontian, 25 minutes away, but I got this and a long roadside (live) meeting with a young pine marten as a bonus.
