I volunteered as a race marshal for the Australian National MTB Champs held last week at Maydena in southern Tasmania.
Duties were to ensure riders and spectators were safe and that accidents could be dealt with quickly and efficiently.
In between races, volunteering gave me the opportunity to stand alone in the forest and simply listen to it breathing.
Early starts also meant that the forest floor was still in relative darkness when I reached my post. As the sun climbed, brilliant sunbeams picked out details like this backlit tree-fern frond (Dicksonia antarctica).
This is an older, previously logged, regenerating forest not a plantation and the dominant species is Eucalytpus regnans or Mountain Ash (among many names). The species grows very quickly and can reach 65m in around fifty years. The trees around the fern here are about that age and it is the butt of one such tree that provides the dark, tapering backdrop.
The tallest known living specimen of the species is Centurion at ~100m tall, just a few kilometres away in the Styx Valley.
Growing so large and so quickly means E. regnans is a fabulous carbon sink with mature trees also providing habitat for countless species of birds, mammals and invertebrates.

The dark forest hypothesis is one of many proposed answers for the Fermi paradox—the observation that advanced alien life is statistically likely yet has not conclusively been observed.
Although variations of the dark forest concept have existed since the 1970s or 80s, the term derives from Liu Cixin’s novel of the same name, second in the Three-Body trilogy. It describes a dangerous universe, where “every civilization is an armed hunter stalking through the trees like a ghost, gently pushing aside branches that block the path and trying to tread without sound”—where advertising your presence can lead to a definitive strike from more cautious, more powerful entities.
Without any external reference, our views of cosmic society are shaped in some way by our own. Are fears of the dark unfounded, or is the universe really a backwards place?

I never really planned on deboxing her, but her box hair was really starting to bug me. Originally I was just going to take her out to redo her hair then put her back in the but honestly she is so gorgeous out of box! Her hair is so thick and so long and it's very brushable once it's washed out.
And sorry for hardly being on here anymore. There's been some family drama going on, so everything has been put on hold for a while. 😜
