…to our place. A house was leveled and a flood control project was installed years ago. Almost all of the trees and plants seen here grew since the flood control project was completed.
From 2010: Our flood control project was completed a month or so ago and it looks great. Twice now It has prevented flooding in this neighborhood. And with the extremely rainy weather we've had over the past few months, the timing could not have been better. This is the view from the curb at what used to be 2557 Little John Trail SE. The street at the back is Crockett Drive, where the house behind this address was also demolished for this project.

On a walk around Mona Vale May 7, 2016 Christchurch New Zealand.
Mona Vale, with its homestead formerly known as Karewa, is a public park of 4 ha in the Christchurch suburb of Fendalton. The homestead and gate house are both listed as heritage buildings with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust (NZHPT). The fernery and the rose garden, and pavilion with the setting of the park along the Avon River, add to the attractiveness of the property. It is one of the major tourist attractions of Christchurch.

A couple weeks ago I walked over to Durand Eastman Park for my morning reading and prayers. I put the Argus C3 in the daypack. The sun was filtering through the trees most delightfully. I took several photographs around me from where I was sitting as the light changed, and one more straight up.

This shot reminds me of some of the Chinese paintings of villages or kingdoms precariously perched on steep mountain sides. In actuality, it's a moss- and fern-covered road cut partially illuminated by a few patches of sunlight filtering through the redwoods in the upper stretches of Bixby Creek, Big Sur, California.

More lovely cold, crisp, sunny light this morning. Had a really busy and tiring day at work - my colleague Rosie and I gave a presentation to another organisation, over the phone in the end, as they couldn't get the video call to work. It went well, but I do find these things really tiring - think it's all the nervous energy I burn off doing them!
Phoned my Mum at lunchtime and had a nice quick catch up with her. She's feeling pretty good, having made it back to her keep fit class yesterday for the first time in many months, and is looking forward to visits from a couple of friends soon. Good to hear her sounding happy :)
I was due to go to a talk at LSE with Rosie tonight, but flaked and came home instead. So tired and also fighting off a cold, so thought a night in might be a better idea.

Wayfarers Chapel is small chapel made mostly of glass that overlooks the Pacific Ocean South of Torrance, a Los Angeles suburb. It is very well known in the area and it is a popular wedding location. The Chapel itself and the grounds are very picturesque and it has great views of the Pacific Ocean as well. It's easy to see why it is such a popular wedding destination. I'm sure the wedding photographers love shooting there as well. In this photo, I was fortunate to capture the Sun bathing the alter in bright dappled light (because of the glass roof) with a clear view of the trees on the outside of the Chapel.
Designed by Lloyd Wright, son of Frank Lloyd Wright, it continues Frank Lloyd Wright's principle of organic architecture, building in harmony with nature. Wright fans will enjoy stopping by and strolling the grounds to take it all in.
One of my favorite things about walking through dense forest is the dappled light that reaches the forest floor when. Occasionally it will serendipitously fall in a great spot to really draw something out. After passing this mountain stream on the way to Sol Duc Falls we were inclined to stop again briefly on the way back. About mid way up the stream from the footbridge there was this small spot where, among the soft light hitting most of the forest floor, on particular mossy rock was directly lit and stood out subtly from the rest of the scene. I'm not sure it really carries through to this photograph, I may have actually diminished in impact in processing the image, but that's what I tried to capture here.
At this point I had put my ND400 filter away and didn't bother to dig it out to do a proper long exposure here. Instead I set up the tripod and took four identical exposures at a modestly 'long' 1/2 second. I blended the exposures together to give the effect of one longer exposure. I'm not as happy with this approach as with simply doing one long exposure (which when you factor in the time I just wasted in post-processing would have been much faster in the long run). As a rule of thumb I'll have to just keep an ND filter handy any time I plan to shoot waterfalls.
I did intend to keep up with one Olympic upload per day this week but missed yesterday - I'll try to compensate with another photo tomorrow (that's for John, who called me out on it). :)

Tower Hamlets Cemetery instead functioned as a burial ground for London's working classes. It quickly filled and ceased as a functioning cemetery in 1966, but still remains a cemetery park"

I've seen some cases on Flickr where people have been highly offended and fly off the handle at the slightest criticism of their work, but I will always welcome it as it helps me improve.

The Freeze church and cemetry was one of the places in my list to Photograph in Palouse. But what happens when you finally get to the church on a memorial weekend sunday ? Well you get cars parked all over the place. As if nature couldn't help messing around, it started to drizzle. So we decided to hit the (dirt) road and look for prospects elsewhere. As we drove away from the church, there was this brief moment when the light made it through the cloud cover lighting up the landscape and revealing the dark veil of the storm system. So we pulled over and grabbed a few shots before we bid adieu.
Using a ploarizer and underexposing the shot slightly helped me get the intricate details of the storm clouds that was causing the drizzle over the landscape.

A view of the pine plantations that dot the landscape around Oberon and the Jenolan Caves. This is a shot from Jenolan State Forest on the central tablelands of NSW about 20km from Oberon. Oberon is a little town that's on the Great Dividing Range and usually gets dustings of snow each year when the cold fronts roll in during winter. The forests in the area are renowned for their saffron milk cap and slippery jack mushrooms that are in abundance in autumn.
