You can find a good photograph in some of the funniest places. For instance, this picture. Walking out of a public bathroom late morning and spot a heavily shaded area of Hostas with some light peaking through the canopy above.

This shot has been a decade in the making. Sometime in 2007 I was introduced to the Carrizo plain through an amazing photograph of multicolored flowers covering hillsides. That photograph like these flowers has disappeared only to be replicated when the conditions are right sometime in the future.

I was ambitious and set out in late March 2008 to find these flowers. I approached from the S and could not believe how incredibly remote and vast the plain felt, being out there at dawn and sunset had a magical feeling. I spent most of my effort on the W side rising high above the plain I found hillsides of flowers but not quite like I had envisioned. As I approached Soda Lake the flowers gradually spread out in all directions turning into a sea of yellow. Ending on Elkhorn rd at sunrise the Tremblor range drew me in and I knew it would be the place to focus on.

2010 presented another super bloom in the plain and I would not get the opportunity to witness the event. Eager to return, the following year I would enter the plain from the 4wd roads (Hurricane rd) from the E, to further scout the Tremblor mountains. 2011 presented a significant challenge, a drought took hold of the state and would not release its grip for 5 years. No flowers on this spectacularly horrifying entrance...my desire laid dormant until murmurings of a superbloom 2017.

Initially I had no intention of making the long journey to the plain, but the endless stream of superbloom emails and photographs was impossible to ignore. An opportunity for 2 days in the plain and perfect weather...I was off. Initially it was a rocky start spending too much time at Soda lake, trying to hike into the tremblors from a random wash, burned/dead flowers in the lower elevations, then finally finding the hidden hiking spot just a little too late (Its 8.5 mi from Highway 58 S on Elkhorn rd as you turn toward the mtns you'll see a gate or 5 mi N from Hurricane rd). After getting my bearings straight I hiked the corresponding ridge to the colorful hillside that became the hallmark of the superbloom. Then I was drawn further and further then down into this canyon breaking trail for miles to this hint of spectacularly vibrant yellow. It all came down to a small bend near 4,000ft to find this nook that was filled with peaking wildflowers. A symphony of meadowlarks complimented the scene as I took as much time possible; having lunch twice, walking away then back 5 times, filling up my phone with photos, it took my batteries dying to pull myself away from the scene.....worth it to an incredible level

The historic Grosse Point Light is located in Evanston, Illinois. Following several shipping disasters near Evanston, residents successfully lobbied the federal government for a lighthouse. Construction was completed in 1873. The lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 8, 1976. On 20 January 1999, the lighthouse was designated a National Historic Landmark. It is maintained under the jurisdiction of the Evanston Lighthouse Park District, an independent taxing authority.

The site of the Grosse Point Lighthouse is the purported site where Father Jacques Marquette landed in 1674 during his trip down the west side of Lake Michigan to visit various Illinois Native American tribes. This tale is largely anecdotal as there is no real historical proof that this ever occurred.

Another image from our new year nature walk.

This was a very twisty wooded path where the the trees created a lovely tunnel to walk through.

Captured with iPhone and edited on the iPad with lots of apps.

Unfortunetly my version of iPhoto/iCloud is not keeping track of my apps like it use to do.

Some apps it does some not so much.

I know I did basic image corrections and cropping in Snapseed. I also imported it into Hipstamatic and applied a Sergio and Hackney film and then it went into VSCO for some more edits using WWF preset.

Then I converted all of those edits to black and white. Not sure which app was used for that final step. Could have been another Hipstamatic camera and film combo or Fotograf.

Happy Polaroid Week, everybody! :) ♥

I've been looking forward to this week for ages - very excited to see all of the fab 'roids from everyone this week :) hope you've all been happy and healthy!

Taken a few years back during a workshop I was leading in the Palouse with Kevin McNeal. I completely forgot about this image until processing it recently. At the time this image was captured the light is normally pretty bright at this location of Steptoe Butte.

On this morning we had very heavy fog to the point that the only real view was down near the bottom of the butte. This helped provide some spectacular light as it found it's way burning through the fog. As usual with this area it took a telephoto (280mm) to isolate this scene from the other elements that did not balance well. This helped keep it clean and simple.

I named this Ground Rainbow for the array of colors each layer offers from top to bottom.

Willow Emerald Damselfly / chalcolestes viridis. Strumpshaw Fen, Norfolk. 15/08/16.

Red Letter Day - Metallic Green Beauty.

This is the first Willow Emerald Damselfly I have ever seen and the first image I have made of one - therefore, of particular significance to me!

I found it perched at head height on a willow leaf beside a shady ditch. What could be better for a first encounter? Well, the fact that it was so confiding I'd say!

My experience of damselflies is that the slightest movement makes them take flight. Not so with this gorgeous insect. I was able to view it closely, from all angles before starting to make images and there it remained, without so much as a wing twitch! Fantastic.

It is always thrilling to see something for the first time but to get a quality encounter such as this is very, very special indeed.

A beautiful, old bridge with buildings on it leading to a campsite just outside Moissac in France.

Not all scenes on my wild camp were taken at crazy times in the morning or night - this one was shot as late in the day as 10:30am! It certainly felt much later as we'd been up since 4:30 am. I was drwan to how the sunlight moved across the slopes in the middle distance and chose my spot and patiently waited until that light fell just right. Fuji XT1, 18-55mm lens at 18mm, f13, 1/25sec, iso 200, 0.6 graduated ND filter, polariser, tripod, cable release.

I'll escape from the forest one day ! Meanwhile a late afternoon, for Autumn, produces low light & dense colouring.

Thanks for looking in.

As you can see by this picture, there are no changes to be seen!

I still remain very excited for my new greenhouse to be sited in this spot, but the weather has not been kind and has delayed our work for yet another week! .... living in hope, i carry on and tend to the rest of my garden.

A dreamy woodland scene enveloping the ancient Penmachno Bridge in North Wales. Moss-covered rocks and the gently flowing stream create a serene foreground, while sunlight filters through a dense canopy of twisted trees. The old stone bridge—half hidden by foliage—arches gracefully over the stream, exuding the mystery of forgotten paths and timeless nature.

... the sun breaks through

This was welcome shade on a very hot day in the Elan Valley ,Mid Wales .This shot was taken just down from the very nice visitor centre they have there .The suspension bridge is no longer in use but right next to it but not visible is the newer road bridge .....Well worth a visit

RIcketts Glen State Park, Pennsylvania

An early Fall photo, taken the second week in October 2014..I just wanted to capture the dappled light coming through the trees when I took the shot.To see what the fountain looks like see the tag below. The 1932 fountain was funded by financier and philanthropist Frank Bailey as a memorial to his wife.It was renovated twice since then in 1956 and 2005,respectively.Please comment.Thank you for viewing.

One of my favourite bluebells shots taken this weekend at the Blickling Estate. The white flower in the foreground is wild garlic and you could smell the stuff a mile off.

Tough to shoot but something about it I like!

Funeral procession for a fire fighter ~ Mount Kisco, NY

Smoke from the burning of dried leaves in our backyard.

I love the dappled effect in this one.

Eastern part of Yosemite National Park. Mt. Lyell, just left of center, is the highest point in the park at 13,114'. The Lyell Glacier, with dappled shadows, is no longer active and is considered a permanent ice field. Mt MacClure to its right, Rodgers Peak the sharp peak on the left, Helen Lake just below center. Taken from "Granite Divide", a granite peak located on the eastern park boundary, between the metamorphic Mts. Dana and Gibbs. Mono Pass is below and out of sight in the deep cleft on the left. The divide between the reddish metamorphic rock and the granite beyond is about at the far shore of Helen Lake.

Canyonlands National Park

Moab, Utah

This scene is located in the Islands in the Sky section of the park. The people walking on the near by butte provide some sense of size for the photo. Looking at the people, you can indeed get a sense that they are walking on an island.

The canyons, mesas and buttes were formed by the erosion of the colorful Colorado Plateau by the Colorado and Green Rivers. The park covers more than 300,000 acres and seems much less crowded (at least during the summer when it is hot) than other national parks. Arches National Park is also located near Moab. The La Sal Mountains which are part of the Rocky Mountains are seen in the distance.
