I'm useless at keeping secrets for too long so might as well talk about it now. I'm working with anime production studio JC Staff to breathe 2D life into our Mirai Suenaga. This work will be for the opening and ending of Mirai Millennium which I will initially use as the OP to Season 2 of Culture Japan.

JC Staff will be working on the animation and I will be working on the backgrounds, editing and sound mastering. You can see some of the backgrounds in the headers of the new design of the site that I hope you like - but its not finished yet and we are rolling out the changes in stages.

What I would like to ask is what are your fave anime OPs? Just want to get an idea of what you like and hopefully get some inspiration as I do the editing. There will be a scene where Mirai is walking as the background scrolls - Mirai with wavy hair and all. A few cuts of her in Summer uniform and some in her Solar Marine uniform too.

I'm currently getting a load of inspiration from the OP of Diebuster - one of my most fave anime OPs.

Do share your fave OP and ED with a link from YouTube pasted in the comments like www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFQ5WGHpo48

If there are any particular inspirations that I use then I promise to stick your name in the credits ^^

BTW, photo taken at the JC Staff studios the other day - tis of Mirai-chan in Twin Angel. Will show you how they make anime and got more nitty gritty than our last visit to Production IG.

Ah, and before I leave you - the following video is quite a laugh and a half which no doubt my anime opening will end up looking like too ^^;

Many fear that the human race will not be able to survive much longer. But just when all hope seems lost, Kodai Susumu and Shima Daisuke retrieve a capsule sent to them by friendly aliens known as the Iscandar.

The composer for Space Battleship Yamato 2199 is Miyagawa Akira [宮川彬良], the son of Miyagawa Hiroshi [宮川泰] who composed the music for the original Space Battleship Yamato. The opening theme for Space Battleship Yamato 2199 is Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199 [宇宙戦艦ヤマト2199] performed by Sasaki Isao [ささきいさお]. Each of the movies has had a different ending theme, so why not have a listen?

The plot below copy pasted from Wikipedia.

Yōto Yokodera is a second year High School student who is arguably the biggest pervert at school. His problem is that he is not good at showing his real emotions. One day, his equally perverted best friend completely transforms and gets rid of his “impure thoughts”; a feat he attributes to the power of the statue of "warawanai neko" (the cat that won’t laugh).

As the rumors suggest, wishing upon the statue and giving an offering(eg. stuffed animal, etc.) you can wish to remove a personality trait from yourself that you do not wish to have anymore. What they do not realize at the time is that it will remove the unwanted trait and give it upon to someone who does need it. As he’s making his offering to the statue, a girl (Tsukiko Tsutsukakushi) arrives at the same place. Tsukiko also hearing of the rumors of the warawanai neko, was there to make her wish. She wishes to be able to be more like an adult and not show her emotions so easily.

Both of them wish upon the warawanai neko and to their surprise the next day at school, Yōto is unable to tell a single lie, and Tsukiko is unable to show any sign of emotion whatsoever (aka kūdere). After realizing that they do not like the change that happened, they work together to try and find out who has received their trait that was taken away in order to get it back, bringing in another character into the mix, Azusa Azuki.

An ojōsama type girl who is the most beautiful first year that has just transferred. She is always being confessed to by many boys in school, the odd thing is that she has no friends and is always alone. Yōto finds out that Azusa is the one that received his unwanted trait and that is where the love triangle and plethora of problems begins.

A summary of the previous meeting is posted by the government a few weeks later on the METI website. Below is a translation of the summary.

The preconception that foreigners will only buy bootlegs and cheap products needs to be stopped. The need for official products overseas is very high. The market environment needs to be improved in order to sell more Japanese products overseas.

Smartphone content and social games are a powerful industry in Japan and can easily be focused on to have an influential economic effect.

There are almost no children in Asia that don't know of Japan's anime and games, however there are no sales of these anime and games in many of these regions. Many first think it’s best to combat pirated versions, but on the other hand there are many customers who currently enjoy pirated content. In order to understand these needs better, companies should create business models that incorporate small transactions through hardware such as smartphones which are used worldwide.

A mix of traditional and modern, West and East are incredibly important in achieving new innovations. A part of promoting 'Cool Japan' is to proactively take part in such endeavors.

Businesses that want to expand overseas are currently often left unable to purchase land. The reason for this can often be attributed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in other countries or government funding. The situation calls for measures that overcome these problems.

The worth of products won't be conveyed effectively if products are simply sold as is, what's important is how exactly this worth is built up in the eyes of consumers. Particularly in overseas countries, products won't become popular without this build up. It may be best to first develop new things locally and attempt to improve this 'worth'. It's also important to convey the background and concept of products to consumers, as well as have someone who can pass this information on effectively.

Fashion is generally a small to medium-sized industry, so it's probably best to create a base of operations overseas and advance into the market from there. Somewhere to collect and put together information is necessary to expand.

Even with the Senkaku island problems in China, there is still a demand for Japanese products.

When expanding overseas, it's important to consider how you intend to customize your business or products for the local market.

Japanese fashion is attracting a lot of attention throughout Asia. There are more copies of fashion magazines across the rest of Asia then there are in Japan. The current problems however are those of trademarks and pirated goods. In order to further develop the fashion industry into the overseas market, it is necessary to join up with various other industries.

At Japan-related events hosted overseas, people from all sorts of different countries sing Japanese songs. These are mostly songs that are popular on YouTube. Many foreigners used to pick up pirated versions of these songs, but are now picking up more and more official versions instead.

The reasons behind this is because official products actually include sound and often because they are limited editions which include special bonuses. From the view point of a Japanese person, these are worth about 20000 yen. It's likely best to target these wealthy consumers first.

Just as the Japanese Embassy of Italy has Ferrari exhibitions in Japan, Japanese Embassies and consulates overseas should open up to such ventures for businesses.

Businesses should first put effort into privately expanding overseas. While there, they can learn more of what supportive measures are available in each country.

Blended interaction with customers (inbound and outbound) should be considered. Japanese markets have proved they can draw in customers through inbound methods that pull the customer in, which means if they attempt to go out and sell with outbound methods, they are likely to succeed.

Step one is the dissemination of information, and not only with new content but also simultaneously through a mix of the Internet and broadcasts, real events and social networking. When it comes to social networking, people are the key to effective transmission of information. How much of a personalized, influential network you can create is important to consider.

There is only so far you can go by expanding overseas by opening up a retail store. It's important to think of new types of products, but they should always incorporate Japanese culture as a part of them.

Consumer content, commercial establishments and simple consumer goods and services need to all be fused together into a single package to create a boom. Connecting all these together will lead to more effective trade, and this connection is an important role of Cool Japan. These basic roles need to be further discussed.

A revised budget of 15,500,000,000 yen (1.5 billion USD) has been allocated for the localization and promotion of content into the overseas market. Step one is to consider how to use this proactively to achieve effective results.

The round table is only 1 hour so we dont get to cover a lot. From the next meeting however, we are required to submit reports. For the second meeting (which will be summarised at the METI website in a few weeks) I raised a point that its important to allow fans of Japanese content to help spread Japanese culture.

There does not seem to be many rights issues in Korea which is one of the reasons why Korean content can be distributed easily but most of that distributing is done by fans of Korean culture.

If you go to a KPOP concert, you are usually allowed to take photos or video footage - much of that is shared on YouTube and you can find about 340,000 results on YouTube for "KPOP Concert" - and the results actually show KPOP Concerts.

If you do a search for "JPOP Concert" on YouTube however, you get 35,000 results and hardly any concert footage.

The reason is that management of Japanese artists/record labels dont allow fans to take photos or videos and even if somebody did, the record labels usually use music matching to automatically pull any footage that contains music that they own from YouTube.

A friend of mine set up a facebook fan page for a Japanese artist - only to have the record label make a claim to Facebook to shutdown the page and give the fan a warning - talk about stabbing fans in the back.

Information about Japanese content in English is few and far between so fans help by creating websites and fan pages - but the Japanese content owners go and do their best to remove that information from the internet.

After raising this issue, the minister took these points as being in need of serious revision of how Japanese artist and content rights are managed.

Some announcements and updates that I should have made earlier but just didn't get round to it ><

I'm presenting on a new TV show called Check Time which starts next Tuesday April 2nd in Japan on Tokyo MX TV where I share Japanese Pop Culture on more of a business level for the domestic market.

Unlike Culture Japan, there are no plans to broadcast the show in other parts of the world but I'll be uploading my bits n pieces to the Internets just like Culture Japan.

The filming for the show starts tomorrow (2012/03/30) ^^; I'll be in Akihabara at about 3pm interviewing fellow gaijins about their favorite places to visit in the holy land. If you would like to meetup and be on the show - just show up outside Gamers and keep an eye on my Twitter.

This weekend, I'll be at the Anime Contents Expo doing some work for King Records. After that, I'll be doing a live NicoNico broadcast from the King Records studios together with my co-host Yoshimi. It will be just like the Good Smile broadcast but focused on anime. Bring King Records, who knows who shall drop into the show ^^;

The broadcast URL is at live.nicovideo.jp/gate/lv86806373

The broadcast time is 2012/03/31 (saturday) 10PM - 12AM JST

You can add this event to your Google Calendar with the button below!

Add this event to Google Calendar!

Moekana sold much more than anybody expected - the first production run sold out during the pre-order period! We are currently doing the second production run now. Thank you to everybody who ordered! There will also be Moekana tournaments at Anime Festival Malaysia but you will obviously need your own pack to participate to win a load of goodies.

Moekana should be with you in April.

I have some Japanese comrades in the industry taking a break in Rothenburg Germany during May 25th - 30th. If you speak some Japanese and would like to be a guide for them for a day then let me know in the comments.

The StarWars documentary that I'm in called The People VS George Lucas is currently showing in cinema's in Japan.

I think thats about it for now ^^;

Now that I've got the PHP developers that I need, I'm now looking for Ruby on Rails developers who I can work with to increase our client base of otaku related companies. So far we've got:

goodsmile.info

bushiroad.fm

starchild.fm (King Records)

www.loveplusphotoclub.konami.jp (Konami)

mikufes.com (Sega)

tkmag.jp/ (Ascii Media Works)

twin-angel.tv (Kadokawa)

kidnemo.fm

figure.fm

doll.fm

tsubuyaku.fm

culturejapan.jp

And I think we got a few more but I forget ^^;

If you can speak Japanese, have a high level of Ruby and can work well with Chris (he makes the hiring decision) for an initial trial period of 3 months, I'll bring you to Japan and sponsor your visa. I'll pay for your ticket and hand you a months wages up front but you need to look for housing on your own - but that should be no problem as you can speak Japanese.

Unfortunately you need a university degree (any) as that's what the government requires to issue a work visa for Japan. I need somebody of the following description.

Has an online profile which proves that the candidate understands the importance of sharing.

Is a user of social media such as Facebook, Twitter and understands the API's needed to work with data from social media sites.

Has examples of previous Ruby on Rails projects online.

Has a web camera and can communicate online through videochat on Skype.

Can communicate on a high level of Japanese (read/speak).

Otaku preferred as I want somebody who can work on the contents that they love - anime, games, figures and manga.

"High level of Ruby on Rails" means just that - you are able to build any application given a functional spec.

If you fit this description then email me at jobs at mirai dot fm. I'll leave the format of the email to you but you already understand what I'm looking for so you should be able to provide me with the info that I need. I do need to see samples of code that you have written however.

Folks who cant speak Japanese but think they are a dab hand at Ruby on Rails should still contact me for remote work. I'll pay you during our trial period and we can decide after if we should pursue a long term working relationship. Salary is based on level of skills. I say "our" trial period because its not just me deciding whether I want to work with you - you are also deciding whether you want to work with me ^^

Please share this with folks around you. If you introduce somebody to me who ends up as a full time employee then I'll pay you 1000 USD via paypal as your referrer fee. This position is for immediate hire but I can wait for folks who need to tie up ends in their current country of residence.

As for the Moekana illustration - its "Ru" [る/ル] for "ルビー" - pronounced "ru-bi-" meaning "Ruby". Mirai-chan has found her ruby and now I'm looking for mine.

BTW - just like I learned all my programing skills from Google Sensei (and Japanese through self study) - Chris learned all his skills including Ruby from Google Sensei too. Its never too late to start learning. Don't learn stuff because you *have* to at school or work - learn stuff because you *want* to and do so *in your own time*.

Discovering Japanese culture has completely changed my life as you may have read and I feel an obligation to continue to share this wonderful culture with the world - I currently seek somebody who feels the same about Japanese culture and would like to help me.

All these are part-time positions. Some require you to be in Japan - some do not. Will be updating this page as more positions are made available.

About your Free Return Ticket to Japan

I'm paying for only one (1) return plane ticket.

You choose when you want to come but you must travel during 2013 - I'm not sure if I will live to past 2013 and want to make sure you travel while I'm still alive so that I can sort out your ticket and meet you.

We will choose the airline you travel by - I won't purposely go for the cheapest ticket and make you transfer 20 times but I won't go for the most expensive either. Will choose the route that makes the most sense.

Once your ticket is booked, I will issue you an e-ticket. You then need to apply for a visa yourself depending on your nationality.

If for whatever reason you cant get hold of a visa then its a message from god - the ticket will be cancelled and given to another reader who will be chosen at random. Many nationalities are issued with a 3 month tourist visa on entry to Japan - ask Google Sensei to see if you are applicable.

The person flying gets the air miles.

You can give the ticket to a friend or family member - but you can't sell it!

Ticket is to Japan only.

No you cant have the money instead. If for whatever reason you cant travel to Japan then I will give the ticket to another reader who will be chosen at random.

I only cover an economy plane ticket - you need to look after your own lodging - check out this list of recommended places to stay in Tokyo.

Destination is Tokyo (Narita or Haneda) but if you want to travel on to Osaka, Kyoto etc then you need to pay for yourself - prepare a Japan Rail Pass before you come.

If I'm not overseas at the time you want to come over, I'll bring you to my office and take you around Akihabara - and maybe visit some of my client offices like Good Smile Company.

Do not overstay in Japan - if you do then its nothing to do with me!

If you are a university graduate, can speak some Japanese and have graphical skills such as Photoshop/Illustrator, editing skills such as Final Cut Pro then I can introduce you to some of my clients who may be interested in hiring you - although I only show you the door - its up to you to walk through it. Check out my profile to see who some of my clients are which include Konami, Kadokawa, Ascii Media Works, Bushiroad, Good Smile Company, Production IG and more - mostly anime and game companies though if you like that sort of thing (like I do ) ^o^

There is a meme going around the Japanese Internets which seem to have been started by Japanese High School Girls called "Makankosappo" [マカンコウサッポウ]. The Kanji is 魔貫光殺砲 and Dragonball fans will know that its a move that Piccolo does which you can see in the video below.

Not sure why Japanese High School girls started this meme but its one of the reasons that prove Japanese High Schools are the best in the world. Period.

The collection of these photos collected from the Internets by Naver and you can find more from the trending topic on Twitter. Makankosappo caught on and now not just the school girls are doing it. Any of you care to try some Makankosappo shenanigans?

Back in December I gave a talk at the My Japan Conference - an event supported by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Japanese tourism agency.

The theme of the conference was "How to make Japan into a country that foreigners want to visit." The theme of the event came about from the amount of foreigners who left Japan (and staying away) due to the nuclear situation after the 201103 earthquake and tsunami.

Many Japanese and foreign speakers attended and talked about how they were doing their bit to share Japanese culture with the aim to inspire others to think of ideas to bring back foreigners to Japan. My talk can be seen in the video below.

I previously talked about how I discovered and became to love Japanese culture. If I wrote down all the things I loved about Japan, the list would probably go on forever! I particularly enjoy Japanese Pop Culture - the anime, games, manga, cute 2D girlies, figures, dolls and so on - it was this culture that helped me discover more about Japan - the traditional and the modern.

Just a few things that come to mind about Japan that I really appreciate from the viewpoint of actually living here.

Transportation - trains, busses run frequently and on time - you can set your watch by the train arrival times!

Non tipping country - folks over here do not need to be motivated by tips.

Diligent and thorough with work. You never see folks with such passion sweeping the streets - its just incredible.

Attention to detail - the Japanese like to pay attention to detail and have a determination to make things perfect - this is known as Kodawari [こだわり]. Many foreigners dont understand the fuss to make things perfect which is one of the reasons why some of them dont get on over here.

Service sector - the service in Japan is just spot on - and thats because everybody just expects it to be. I order something from amazon and it arrives the same day. I can have folks from the post office come to pickup parcels to be delivered, in the event that trains are late, the station will issue proof that the trains were late so that you can show them to your boss.

Honesty - the honesty of Japanese folk is just astounding. I lost my Lumix DSLR at Narita airport just before I got onto the plane (panic!). When I arrived in Singapore, I was approached by staff saying that they found my camera and that I could just pick it up when I arrived back in Japan.

I left 2 new mobile phones on a train (panic!) and after telling a member of staff, he called the next station where they got on to the carriage and retrieved it for me - I went to the next station to pick up the phones.

My intern left is wallet on his chair in a restaurant - went back after 30 mins and managed to get it back.

And so far Japan is the only place where I have seen unmanned stores.

Endless supply of work - but only once you have built a network of connections. As previously mentioned, Folks in Japan generally do business with folks who they know or through an introduction. Once you have built a network for yourself, you pretty much have an endless supply of work - you then just need to continue cultivating new relationships to build your career or business. As I said - these are just some aspects of Japanese society that I love which some folks around the world may not be able to appreciate just through consuming content online. I've been living in Japan for 13 years now and everyday is always a fresh new experience.

I would love to hear what you love about Japanese culture and why. Have you visited Japan before? Have you been learning about the culture with Japanese friends?

Spotted yesterday during a trip to Izu. I'm sure they left out other ways that a person may want to use a toilet. Although I think the bottom right one could mean "No diving."

Are there signs like this in your neck of the woods teaching folks how to go for a dump?
