Named for local dignitary, Mr. Peter Roland, whose family began the history of hospitality in this location nearly 100 years ago, PR’s an elegantly appointed lobby bar, with large comfortable chairs, 65 inch flat screen television and the warming scent of burning wood in a double hearth natural stone fireplace. Bright colors and a glowing fire harken back to the property's century-old history as a bed and breakfast. www.highpeaksresort.com

Some of the essential artifacts from the original Dancing Bears Lounge adorn the new space as a way to remember and pay homage to the past. The two enduring bear statues that once watched over the main entrance of the DBL for example now serve as twirling sentries at the front door overlooking Main Street while the irreplaceable Dancing Bears mural commissioned by Peter Roland now hangs on the wall directly next to the bar. www.highpeaksresort.com

Plate 56. Dancing bear at Mount Abu.

Sharing a Street Level entrance with Dancing Bears, an enticing stairway leads up to Reflections. Here is a place to gather, a place for family, couples, and colleagues to enjoy individually prepared meals beyond compare, with an expansive and diverse wine selection to rival any in Lake Placid. Reflections is elegant, not stuffy. It is calming and relaxing, where a great meal made from fresh local and regional ingredients can be savored, and the day’s events fondly revisited www.highpeaksresort.com

Courtney hugs the Dancing Bear sculpture in one of the historic courtyards near Byward Market. It's the work of Inuit artist Pauta Saila, who created an extensive series of similarly jocular ursine figures.

Name: Sher Ali

Age: 43

Village: Chorbhatti, Chhattisgarh, Central India

Occupation: Agriculture

With five sons and four daughters to feed and clothe, Sher always struggled to support his large family on the minimal wage he earned from performing with his bear. Moving from village to village meant his children could not attend school. After handing over his bear in 2008, Sher purchased four acres of land with support from WSPA and WTI. He now raises two crops every year earning about 150,000 rupees annually. Sher’s school age children now attend classes and he says he no longer wants to keep bears or has any desire to perform with them.

A crude iron needle used to sew mattresses and sackcloths, is heated in a coal fire and plunged into the bear's nose with a group of men holding the squealing cub tight. The site of the nose piercing was invariably infected in all the cases observed in the WSPA funded investigation.

Once the rope is put through the tender nose the cub will do anything to protect itself from the pain caused by the tugging of the rope.
