A dancing bear and other, less ursine characters await their cues offstage at a performance of scenes from The Nutcracker. The characters -- members of the Boston Ballet Company -- were dancing on a small stage in the atrium of International Place.

With five sons and four daughters to feed and clothe, Sher always struggled to support his large family on the minimal wage he earned from performing with his bear. Moving from village to village meant his children could not attend school. After handing over his bear in 2008, Sher purchased four acres of land with support from WSPA and WTI. He now raises two crops every year earning about 150,000 rupees annually. Sher’s school age children now attend classes and he says he no longer wants to keep bears or has any desire to perform with them.

To make the dancing bears safer to handle - they would file down and or knock out their teeth. These procedures were performed without anaesthetic or painkillers and never by someone with veterinary training (usually a village elder with crude instruments).
