Straw Bear, Baby Bear and their Minder
The 34th Straw Bear Festival 2013
In Whittlesea, from when no one quite knows, it was the custom on the Tuesday following Plough Monday (the 1st Monday after Twelfth Night) to dress one of the confraternity of the plough in straw and call him a 'Straw Bear'. A newspaper of 1882 reports that "... he was then taken around the town to entertain by his frantic and clumsy gestures the good folk who had on the previous day subscribed to the rustics, a spread of beer, tobacco and beef".
The tradition fell into decline at the end of the 19th century, the last sighting being in 1909 as it appears that an over-zealous police inspector had forbidden 'Straw Bears' as a form of cadging.
Revival
The custom was revived in 1980 by the Whittlesea Society, and for the first time in seventy years a 'Straw Bear' was seen on the streets accompanied by his attendant keeper, musicians and dancers, about 30 in all. Various public houses were visited around the town as convenient places for the 'Bear' and dancers to perform in front of an audience - with much needed refreshment available.

A Paradise for Bears
DANCING BEARS PARK Belitsa was founded in the year 2000 by VIER PFOTEN. Although the training of these animals to become dancing bears has been prohibited in the country since 1998, in May 2007 there were still three registered dancing bears held in captivity.
In June 2007 these three bears were freed and brought to the Belitsa dancing bears park. Officially these were the three last dancing bears in Bulgaria!

I just love that they made a replica of their first brewery in Brimfield inside the new facility in Charlton. A reflection back to their beginnings in 2011 to even more expansion today.

This 7 month old bear cub was rescued from poachers who were condemming him to a life of incredibly cruel treatment in the dancing bear trade. When they had bought him, the bear dancers would have first disarmed the cub for their own protection, they would have pulled out his claws and smashed out his teeth, all without anaesthetic or subsequent pain relief. Then they would have pierced his nose with a red hot poker in order to insert barbed ropes through his muzzle to control him.
Now his days are filled just being a bear; learning to forage for food he likes such as termites and fruit, and growing up into a happy, healthy, well adjusted bear .
