Name: Aslam Khan

Age: 24

Village: Chorbhatti, Chhattisgarh, Central India Occupation: Auto rickshaw owner

For many years Aslam roamed the streets, relying on the meagre income from

his performances with his bear. He would sometimes find himself hit at or cursed

by people who did not approve of his livelihood. But these days his life is very

different. He loves his job as a Rickshaw driver and regards the new opportunity

provided by WSPA and WTI as a ‘second birth’. Aslam now makes 10,000 rupees

a month – enough to take care of all the needs of his family. Since giving up his

bear and making a new start Aslam has also become interested in politics, playing an active role in his village Panchayat (local assembly).

Here's another batch of oldies but goodies from my 35 mm days. These are scanned images of my past prints.

This is me dare I say over 20 years ago! My friend Pete (seated) and I went to a Dead show at the Oakland Coliseum. We were tailgating when this guy came up to us and asked for a burger. He said he was a chemist and had moved within the past year to California. He supported himself by making acid in his home lab.

To make the dancing bears safer to handle - they would file down and or knock out their teeth. These procedures were performed without anaesthetic or painkillers and never by someone with veterinary training (usually a village elder with crude instruments).

When Kalandar bear owners agreed to take up an alternative livelihood after weeks of discussions with WSPA/WTI, the Sloth bears in their possession were surrendered to the forest department. This bear was sent to the Kanan Pendari Zoological Park situated in the outskirts of Bilaspur city.

A crude iron needle used to sew mattresses and sackcloths, is heated in a coal fire and plunged into the bear's nose with a group of men holding the squealing cub tight. The site of the nose piercing was invariably infected in all the cases observed in the WSPA funded investigation.

Once the rope is put through the tender nose the cub will do anything to protect itself from the pain caused by the tugging of the rope.

A dancing bear and other, less ursine characters await their cues offstage at a performance of scenes from The Nutcracker in the atrium of International Place. The dancers were members of the Boston Ballet Company. They danced on a small stage behind that curtain on the left.

Dancing

Not much dancing going on around here these days. But when I saw the challenge was dancing, I thought of the Grateful Dead Dancing Bears. We have a few around the house... not mine but Kevin's. He is the Dead Head in the family (and right now he is on a Zoom call with DECHeads from our former employ at Digital Equipment Corporation in the early 1990s).

I used the Step and Repeat technique to make the Dancing Bear dance. I added some text from Man Smart, Women Smarter (one of my favorite Dead songs). Added an image from a tourist license plate from Haight Ashbury t-shirt shop. Added other textures and used the Sheer Spring look in Topaz Studio 2. You can see the parts of the image here: www.smugmug.com/app/organize/Dancing-Images
