Damaged book

The placename is probably derived from Irish Dún mBó, "hillfort of cattle," suggesting that a Gaelic Irish fort was on this site before the later castle.[3] The castle was built for the D'Arcy family in the mid-15th century and marked the western edge of The Pale. According to the Civil Survey (1654–6) Thomas Darcy owned the entire parish and on the premises there was ‘a Castle, a Church, a Mill, an Orchard and a fishing weare’.

During the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland in 1649 the Castle was fired upon from the south bank by passing troops on their way from Drogheda to Athboy, but avoided any real damage.

According to legend, the occupant, George d'Arcy, entertained King James on the night before the Battle of the Boyne (1690) and King William the day after, inspiring the couplet: "Who will be king, I do not know, But I'll be d'Arcy of Dunmoe."

The two-storey building attached to the east may be an 18th-century addition. A drawing of 1795 shows the castle intact. It was burned down during the Irish Rebellion of 1798. Now only the two southern towers and some walls remain.[4][5]

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Quite a few trees in the woods with damaged boughs.

Of course, this female mallard was unable to tell me about what happened, but the damage to the bill is quite evident. More subtle in the picture is that it appears part of the tongue is missing too. Still able to function normally since the injury, based on what I was seeing, but who know the cost to longevity if there is more energy being expended to stay nourished.

For the Macro Mondays Theme: Pink

A roze koek ("pink cake") is a Dutch pastry. It consists of a round, flat, dense cake with a layer of pink fondant icing, similar to black and white cookies. Normally they are a lot bigger, nowadays they are also made in a tiny mini variant which I used here. Same yummy taste, less calories!

With this kind of photography it's always difficult not to eat the subject.

Happy Macro Mondays

Thank you very much for your time, faves and comments, it is much appreciated.

A big radial spiderweb that has sustained damage but is still hanging in there. Found at the Adelaide Zoo.

Creake Abbey is just outside the village of North Creake, a few miles south of Burnham Market in Norfolk. The vast majority of our abbeys and monasteries were destroyed in the Dissolution by King Henry VIII in the mid-late 1530s. But Creake Abbey, founded by the Augustinians as a priory in the 12th century, had come to grief long before that. A fire swept through the abbey in 1483, damaging the church and several of the other buildings beyond repair.

Subsequently, although extensive rebuilding of the quire and presbytery had made good progress an outbreak of the 'sweating sickness' wiped out the monastic community in 1506, the abbot himself being the last to die. This was a mysterious and contagious disease that struck England and later continental Europe in a series of epidemics beginning in 1485. The disease was last recorded in 1551.

The abbey site and estate was given to Lady Margaret Beaufort in 1507, and ended up in the ownership of Christ's College, Cambridge. The abbey ruins are Grade I-listed and in the care of English Heritage. They are freely accessible to the public.

Pileated Woodpecker - Male

Caught another opportunity to take some photos of this woodpecker. He apparently found a tree he really liked because unlike the previous encounter, he spent a good 20 minutes pounding away at this dead tree. Managed some nice debris shots like this one.

Though this part of the road was not underwater during recent heavy rainfall, the shoulder became a real mess due to lots of running water going downhill. The water ended up undercutting the pavement. I called the authorities when I discovered this unsafe situation.

Thanks for views,faves and comments:-)

Very pleased to see this one, a fairly early example? Departement 23 is Creuse, a little way north from where I saw it.

Colour is similar to the Majorette diecast version I have. I think that has a slightly damaged front bumper too.
