To keep things cool the coachwork is peppered with louvres - on the sides as well. I think this one was the V8?
This was one of the participants in the Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally in Heaton Park, Manchester in September 1996. It's an ex-Manchester City Transport 1969 Daimler Fleetline with a Park Royal body. A note in the programme of the event said this about the vehicle:
Daimler Fleetline, Park Royal Body, NNB 598H
Entered by Hycote, Royton, Oldham, Lancs
Former Operator - Manchester City Transport. Hycote recently purchased this vehicle to save it from going to scrap. The company intend to use it for exhibition purposes but retain the exterior vintage livery of Manchester City Transport. The vehicle has been exposed to weather for 5 years, hence the poor paint finish.
The weekend of 14-15 September 2013 was the heritage open weekend and various places were open to the public in Northampton. They were linked by four vintage buses. Three ex-Northampton Corporation Daimlers and an ex-United Counties Bristol RE.

I was born in 1971 and the Daimler Type "D" double-decker was a common scene in the 1960s and 1970s in Hong Kong
This model is made by a company called Cars Workshop, which specialises/ specializes in Hong Kong buses.
The three yellow bands in the front of the bus indicates that this bus only has one conductor, and boarding was allowed from the front-door only. Prior to the change, apparently passengers must board from the rear door.

Apparently this driver wanted a picture of me just as much as I wanted a picture of him!

It was once said: "the aristocracy buy Daimlers, the nouveau riche buy Rolls-Royce".
As a massive Rolls Royce fan I'm inclined to disagree, but I do agree that when it came to buying luxury cars when hitting the jackpot, the Daimler wasn't exactly everyone's first choice, which is something I can't understand why.
It can be said that their cars were just as luxury and capable as even the most top range machines Rolls Royce and Bentley could produce, and for Daimler, nothing topped their crowning achievement, the DS420.
The Daimler DS420 first entered production in 1968, being based on the chassis of the Jaguar Mk.X and being powered by a 4.2L Jaguar Straight-6 engine. The car was built largely to replace the earlier Daimler DR450, but also had a hand in seeing off the Vanden Plas Princess, and luxury version of the Austin Princess.
At the time of production Jaguar had just been nationalised into British Leyland, and by extension Daimler, which had been under ownership of the company since 1960. The DS420 was styled internally by the folks at Vanden Plas, who created probably the highest luxury car British Leyland had to offer, indeed locking horns with the Rollers of the day.
So beautiful and sleek was this machine that it made its way into the State Households of many European governments, including the British, Danish and Swedish Royal Houses.
But even though this car was truly magnificent, it never truly took off in the numbers that Rolls Royces were. Although bought off by aristocratic families and certain wealthy business executives, most of these cars found their way into the trade of Wedding Limousines, Hotel Transfer cars and, most prominently, Hearses.
Even so, the car did soldier on through the dark days of British Leyland, escaping the shoddy workmanship and striking unions that surrounded it, and managed to finish production in 1992 with 4,100 members built.
This one however is a truly fantastic example of one of these few remaining cars in motion. Although you may see a few still in the care of European Royal Families, private ones are very rare indeed. But the ones that continue to exist in private car will usually look as immaculate as this.
Or, if you're really desperate, invite yourself to someone's wedding, chances are one will show up there!

On paper not much separated the Jaguar XJ6 and Daimler Soverign, asides from trim and detailing differences. This late series 2 car would have easily have been classified as a classic car by the time this car was photographed in 2002/03. Its popularity in banger racing too, would mean very few would remain in scrapyards for too long. Jaguars brilliant styling on this car must rate it one of the worlds most balanced and attractive 4 door saloons, but proved to be a difficult accolade to live down, as styling cues for the 4th incarnation of Jaguar XJ were still evident as recently as 2009.

1897 lasted until mid '83 and was then stored before sale to Ensigns and scrapping early in '84. 1907 lasted longer, ending service in '83 then becoming a mobile benefits office for the GLC, until that was abolished, after which it performed similar roles for a number of other bodies before ending up as a Christmas tree in Lydney?
