Long before the new bus station was built and a Red Rover cost £1.10. An off peak travelcard 32 years later is £6.30, who says London fares are high?

Was wondering how long it would be before I bumped into this again...

It was once said: "the aristocracy buy Daimlers, the nouveau riche buy Rolls-Royce".

As a massive Rolls Royce fan I'm inclined to disagree, but I do agree that when it came to buying luxury cars when hitting the jackpot, the Daimler wasn't exactly everyone's first choice, which is something I can't understand why.

It can be said that their cars were just as luxury and capable as even the most top range machines Rolls Royce and Bentley could produce, and for Daimler, nothing topped their crowning achievement, the DS420.

The Daimler DS420 first entered production in 1968, being based on the chassis of the Jaguar Mk.X and being powered by a 4.2L Jaguar Straight-6 engine. The car was built largely to replace the earlier Daimler DR450, but also had a hand in seeing off the Vanden Plas Princess, and luxury version of the Austin Princess.

At the time of production Jaguar had just been nationalised into British Leyland, and by extension Daimler, which had been under ownership of the company since 1960. The DS420 was styled internally by the folks at Vanden Plas, who created probably the highest luxury car British Leyland had to offer, indeed locking horns with the Rollers of the day.

So beautiful and sleek was this machine that it made its way into the State Households of many European governments, including the British, Danish and Swedish Royal Houses.

But even though this car was truly magnificent, it never truly took off in the numbers that Rolls Royces were. Although bought off by aristocratic families and certain wealthy business executives, most of these cars found their way into the trade of Wedding Limousines, Hotel Transfer cars and, most prominently, Hearses.

Even so, the car did soldier on through the dark days of British Leyland, escaping the shoddy workmanship and striking unions that surrounded it, and managed to finish production in 1992 with 4,100 members built.

This one however is a truly fantastic example of one of these few remaining cars in motion. Although you may see a few still in the care of European Royal Families, private ones are very rare indeed. But the ones that continue to exist in private car will usually look as immaculate as this.

Or, if you're really desperate, invite yourself to someone's wedding, chances are one will show up there!

No number plates on this one. The RAC badge with Daimler symbol within it, is probably quite rare now.

I was recently very kindly given a disc of old car show photos from the mid to late 70's which were found on glass slides in a skip and then scanned to disc, i thought i'd uploaded them to here, there are over 1100 images so it could take me a while!

Edinburgh's only close comparison to Birmingham's football specials was the buses they used - Birmingham style Daimlers - and here at St Andrew Square fleet 115 a 1949 Daimler CVD6, with Met-Cam 56 seat body awaits departure for Tynecastle. Its fair to say at that time numerous routes passed or went close to the stadium of Hearts FC, including the 1, 2, 3, 4, 22, 33, 34/35 and 44 hence less requirement for specials.

Neither was there much requirement to the other main football ground at Easter Road as a special train service dropped fans at Easter Road Park Halt, located at Lochend Park very near to the Hibs FC stadium although interestingly this served to set down only so fans would have to use bus services to return by services 1, 34, 35 or 42. Can recall a 'wee laddie' boarding in Easter Road enquiring why maroon buses were allowed to come down Easter Road ! On that tact the boy walking with his mother isn't boarding the bus and looks like an afternoon shopping for him !

In 1955 these Daimler buses operated from two depots Gorgie and Central, my guess is 115 worked from the latter. It remained in service until 1962 when most of the Daimler (CVD) engined types were withdrawn. Note the nearside advert for Gilroy Car Sales located near to Edinburgh's Central bus garage. Note the paper bill in use on nearside front window yet 'Football Match' screens were in use with service number 3, so can only presume these have still to be set or weren't available on bus that day in August hence white cover on driver's cap.

Daimler's from three different Midland's bus fleet's,all big users of the Daimler Gardner specification. The three fleets are Coventry, West Bromwich and just visible one of the "odd" Walsall Fleetlines.

Surprised me to see how late this one was registered, though apparently Daimler versions of the 420 did continue in production for a little longer than their Jaguar sister.

I was two months away from being born when this one first hit the roads (down on the south coast I think, judging by the registration).

Western SMT had a varying allocation of Daimler Fleetlines through the years at Ardrossan depot. They were shifted out in the mid 1970s and another batch arrived around about 1979. The trio which returned included two which had been allocated to Ardrossan and moved away NR2125/6 (DSD766/7D) along with an Ayr example NR1990 (BCS973C). These were replaced by some JAG -F examples after a year or two. The DSDs had been converted to fully automatic transmission whch made them less pleasant to travel in. BCS on the other hand was a lovely machine and would have made a great purchase for an independent. Here they repose in the sun at Princes Street behind the depot.

With the buses on strike today I was forced to walk back to my apartment, but while on the way I decided to pester the various London Hotels and Car Dealerships by grabbing a few shots of their classic motors.

So first on my list was that always classical Daimler DS420, with its distorted chrome grille rippling the lights of nearby buildings like a babbling brook.

The X308 was introduced in 1997, to a design by Geoff Lawson.

The X308 kept much of the same exterior styling as the X300, with its rounded four-headlamp bonnet, low roofline, sloping tail, and wrap-around rear light clusters. From the front, the two generations can be differentiated by the shape of the indicator lenses (rectangular on the X300, oval on the X308), and by the shape of the fog lamps and lower valance air intake (both of which are more rounded on the X308.)

Available with engines of 3.2 litre 240bhp, a 4.0 litre bhp with 290 bhp and a 4.0ltr Supercharged engine of 370bhp.

The Vanden Plas version were top of the model range with the Supercharged engine as found in the XJR was known as the Super V8. These Supercharged long-wheelbase variants were also fitted with Jaguar's Proprietary CATS adaptive suspension. The "Sports" setup from the XJR application, however, is replaced by a "touring" set-up, exclusive to supercharged Daimler and Vanden Plas variants. It is softer and more compliant than the XJR's Computer Adaptive Technology Suspension system.

This car belonged to HRH The Queen and was used by her private use before being returned to Jaguar for preservation.. It was also the last X308 built.

This was one of the participants in the Greater Manchester Transport Society's Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally at Heaton Park, Manchester in September 1993. It's an ex-Birmingham Corporation 1954 Daimler CVG6, and the programme of the event had this note about the vehicle:

'Daimler CVG6, Crossley H55R, 1954 MOF225

Entered by West Midlands Travel Ltd

One of the last batch of "Birmingham Standards", it had a service life of 23 years and was then restored over a four year period by apprentices at the company's Engineering Technical Training Centre.'

Lots of wood & leather as you'd expect. A nice place to be and all in outstandingly good condition. My only real gripe with the car at all was its lack of head restraints on the front seats.

En route to Narborough via Enderby, Midland Red D13 Daimler Fleetline 6164 (SHA664G) speeds down the Narborough Road dual-carriageway towards the Leicester city boundary. The bus was one of a batch of 103 vehicles delivered in 1969-70 with Alexander J-type bodywork, featuring a second set of doors behind the front axle. They were equipped for one-person operation from the outset. A pair of Bedford TK vans follow.

This shot was taken by me mid 1980s.

The location is Southfield Lane, Great Horton, Bradford which was (is?) on route 680.

It was a curious route, classed as a Circular, yet went into the City Centre. This bus is showing a part wrong destination as its heading for Heaton/City Centre yet shows Holme Wood which is the terminus of the route in the other direction.

I liked these buses a lot although I saw them as the 'younger brothers' to the big 2 door Alexander Atlanteans which Bradford had purchased.

The only other buses I have seen of a design/bodywork similar to this were in Sheffield and Liverpool.

Does anybody know the fate of 2350?

Derby 155 (BCH155B) was a Roe bodied Daimler CVG6 that dated from 1964. By the time this picture was taken in the mid 1970's, the vehcile had lost its green and cream livery, and was wearing the Town's new tow-tone blue livery. The picture is taken in Morledge, outside Derby's old 1930's Bus Station. Sadly, this grand old bus station was recently demolished. :-(
