I was supposed to write an essay based on the idea of Francis Alys' Guards (2004), but somehow didn't write an essay at all and got very carried away. It went from a critical look at the place of walking in modern art to attempting to dissolve all logical meaning entirely. Initially a snide piss-take, I wrote a ludicrous non-story about the City of London and its inhabitants. After that the form of the essay went out of the window too. The "Cut up" of writing was pioneered by Dadaists and later used by Beat Generation poets. I didn't manipulate individual lines or letters but instead used chunks of text and sewed them back together to turn the written text into something more visual and dissolve meaning even further.

Annette and I shared a porterhouse steak that I grilled. This is cutup along with peas and sweet potato. The original steak was about 1 1/2 pounds.

Chinese Rocks. A marvellous idea for a font that was inspired by stenciled lettering on imported merchandise containers. Chinese Rocks looks like it was a hand cut rubber stamp, used about a million times. Uneven line thickness and odd stem widths combine with sharp corners to create the effect of letters cut out with a box knife in a hurry.

Beide Tools entstanden im Kurs "cutup.20 – fulldome und immersive medien" im Sommersemester 2010 unter der Leitung von Professor Klaus Dufke.

Came alongside me at speed, they were in the left turn only lane, I was going straight ahead on the outside lane designed for that purpose. Cut me up to get through the fast disappearing gap. Blew my horn when I realised what was going to happen and got 'the finger' from all three of them. Combined age approx 200.
