Crisscrossing the bay, looking up at towers that hold cables like loom heddles hold yarn, a bridge becomes a loom becomes a bridge. It’s my body that is woven into remapped coast lines as I shuttle myself from place to place, across bridges and steel cables like looms dressed in yarn that pick up, displace, misplace, and replace stories each time we pass through.

How does one pick up a story-in-motion? I could start with origin stories in Punjab, Vancouver, and Chihuahua. I could start with my grandmother’s experiences on Hollywood sets and the Chemawa Indian School. I could start with my dad skirting the blocks around Toberman Park in Los Angeles and later the halls of Boalt Law School at UC Berkeley. My family fabric is a collision of stories-in-motion, a material that keeps changing as each generation figures out how to pass it to the next.

This work is dedicated to my parents and grandparents who figured out a thousand ways to pass through a U.S.-bounded fabric, to change the shape of it, and to leave the spaces for our story to be heard in present tense and reverberating echoes. It’s because of them that I can pick up and pass through threads of puckered, twisted, folded, shredded, and entangled currents of history.

Kira Dominguez Hultgren (b. 1980, she/they) is a U.S.-based artist, weaver, and educator. They studied postcolonial theory and literature at Princeton University, and studio arts and visual and critical studies at California College of the Arts. Their research interests include material and embodied rhetorics, re-storying material culture, and weaving as a performative critique of the visual. Dominguez Hultgren weaves with the material afterlife of a so-called multiracial family: Chicanx-Indigenous-Indian-Hollywood Hawaiian-Brown-Black. Instead of being passed down, weaving and textile processes are brought up, resurrected from family stories and fabrics. Questions about cultural appropriation and codeswitching, exoticism, and performing cultural misrecognitions occupy their practice.

Dominguez Hultgren has exhibited their work broadly including shows at the Museum of Arts and Design in NYC, Lehmann Maupin Gallery, Ballroom Marfa, the San Jose Museum of Quilt and Textile, the Roswell Museum, Montgomery Museum of Fine Art, and Eleanor Harwood Gallery in San Francisco. Their work has received critical attention including reviews in the New York Times and Architectural Digest; and is in the de Young Museum of Fine Art’s permanent collection. Recent residencies and fellowships include the Basque BioDesign Center in Bilbao, Spain, Gensler, Facebook, and the Headlands Center for the Arts. Dominguez Hultgren is an assistant professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in the School of Art + Design. They are a 2024 Center for Craft Research Fund recipient, 2024 Illinois Arts Council Fellowship recipient, and a 2024 United States Artists Fellow.

Currently the Avoca Museum, it is also the homeplace of Colonel Charles Lynch (brother of Lynchburg founder John Lynch). It was also known as Green Level, and the current house dates to 1901. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

because it's a bangle bracelet! get it? maybe i'm the only nerd.

i handmade the base and handwrapped the structure of this bracelet. sterling silver and blackstone are complemented with bali silver and sterling rounds.

handmade hook and eye clasp, approximately 7.5" in diameter. this is a solid bangle that definitely has enough give to put on but will not stretch flat.

built 1928-1934. The architect was Josef Fanta (7 December 1856 – 20 June 1954 ), who during Imperial times had designed the main train station.

The central part of the eastern façade above the columns is emphasized by figural allegorical sculptures Entrepreneurship, Ingenuity, Perseverance and Truthfulness. The reclining statues with children on both sides of the façade represent Trade and Industry.

The creators of the sculptural decoration are Vincenc (Čeněk) Vosmík and Josef Augustin Paukert. At the time of its construction, the building was already archaic in style, which was attacked, condemned and ridiculed in the press. In 1930, the critic Jaromír Pečírka even faced a lawsuit from the authors of the sculptural decorations.

Doesn't the current look like a snake here? I like to imagine it sneaking out into the water to attack those people in the distance. Weird thing to like imagining, but you see enough monster movies, it makes sense.
