im off to paris today for a robot workshop! i made these to bring to my friend who lives in the us and will be there, asked me to smuggle in some cupcakes but i thought cookies might be a bit more easier- i asked him to bring me candy hearts and sprinkles :D
I LOVE the way these turned out. A woman I work with asked for some cupcakes for christmas...something polka dot and whimsical she said. The day before, when I asked her what flavor she wanted she gave me the ole, "You're too busy! That's okay! Never mind..." But I wasn't going to let her off the hook because I'd already envisioned these and knew they'd turn out so cute.
Ok, cupcake stores are pretentious. The amount of people they had working behind the counter was ludicrous. Seriously, one guy took your order and there were three people (!) assembling my 4 cupcakes in my box.
All that aside, the chocolate mint one was pretty damn good. The red velvet came in 2nd, and the toasted marshmallow and vanilla were just good.

I made new gumpaste flowers in various colors but will make even more vibrant color( its like storing for winter but these are for spring and summer bakings)

Altered notepad #3. Jumping on the cupcake bandwagon-- I loooovve cupcakes, doesn't matter if I'm eating them or staring at them (take a peek at my early flickr favorites. they're all of pretty and outrageously decorated cupcakes!).

David and I baked cupcakes (from scratch!) and a loaf of bread for Erica's birthday. I gotta say, I'm no cake baker, but these cupcakes came out pretty darn great. We ate them in the back of a McDonald's, along with burgers, nuggets, and fries. AWESOME.
PS - Erica doesn't like frosting, hence the bald cupcakes.
with carob frosting... I didn't taste it, but Fritzy seemed to like it fine and shared it with his neighbor, Poncho. Purchased at the Noe Valley Pet Store for a ridiculous $1.99. I will never buy another.

I took my white cupcakes and crushed some candy canes on top. Zach liked them so I think they're a success!

Lovely buckwheat cupcakes I baked over holiday break. There is infact no cocoa or chocolate in this recipe, yet the deep color was imparted due to buckwheat flour.

i ate so much candy tonight. i'd have a hard time as a food photographer.
question or two - a friend has asked me to put a few photos in a show that's coming up. i'd like to do a few really large prints, like 3'x4' or so. how do you think this would look large? another thing i am wondering these days is what is the difference between art and advertising? is this just "food photography?" would anyone want giant cupcakes on their wall? besides me, that is!
grr, deciding what photographs i want to blow up and hang on a wall for the world (well, some of it at least!) to see is rather nerve-wracking.
for the strobists, this was lit up by an sb-600 shot into a silver umbrella camera right and high, with a white bounce next to the cupcakes camera left, to try to get rid of the blue haze that is showing up in my studio shots. ugh. and yum.

Cupcakes come in elaborately decorated varieties...they really are the perfect treat. They have captured the hearts of millions. Cupcake shops are popping up in neighborhoods everywhere.
The first cupcake was created in 1796 (written in 'American Cookery' by Amelia Simmons). lemon cake with lemon zest cream cheese frosting. just the perfect hint of lemon flavor. the cakes were so good i ate 3 right out of the oven, before frosting. after a day the frosting on the cupcakes set up a little firmer, which is how i like it.
