This really is a cucumber! I was telling the squash vendor at the Farmers' Market this morning about how something made me call the two-toned squash last week a cucumber. So he pulled this round thing out of a box (where it was waiting for somebody to pick it up -- all these round cucumbers were already sold) and showed it to me, saying that it was indeed a cucumber. I didn't have my real camera but took this picture with my phone.

Made with cucumbers, rice vinegar, sesame oil, chilli, ginger and Sichuan peppers.

A cucumber plant came up in our window box - we figure the seed was in the worm dirt we used to fill the planter. It's using the window screen as a convenient trellis.

With all of the buzz going on about chia seeds, one might think that they are a creation of modern society. However, chia seeds have been cultivated and consumed since around 3000 B.C. in Pre-Columbian societies. Chia seeds were regarded so highly by Mayan and Aztec societies that they incorporated the seeds into their religious ceremonies. The seeds were even coined running food, because ancient warriors used the seeds as fuel for their long journeys.
