I didn't know what this was when I saw it in the park. A consultation with Mr Google revealed that it was a cucumber beetle, and now I see that there are two cucumber beetles. Apparently they are serious pests and can cause severe crop damage: not just because the beetles and their larvae eat plants but because they can spread viruses and bacterial infection.
Cucumbers came fast and furious by late August. We were astonished by how many we picked. We ended up giving many away because we couldn't eat them fast enough.
For gstrader, to illustrate the dialogue we were having about cucumbers. This is half of what we in Europe call a cucumber, which as you can see is bigger than and different to a US salad cucumber...
This came from our garden. It's like an English Cucumber. The skin is thin and edible. I've made lots of dishes with them including Cucumber Salad. We also slice them on our green salads. They are really delicious!
This was just a shot taken while setting up for the knife shots, but I kinda like it :)
SB800 diffused through frosted perspex camera left, SB600 underneath the cucumber slices, both on manual (can't remember the ratio but the strobe underneath was just giving a tiny burst of light to make them glow) and CLS triggered.
Serves 2
1 cucumber, halved, seeded and sliced
5 leaves napa cabbage, shredded
2 scallions, chopped
1/2 cup toasted and salted peanuts, chopped
2 tbsp rice vinegar
2 tsp sugar
2 tbsp chili sauce
1 garlic clove, minced
1/2 cup cilantro (or less but I love cilantro)
1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
In a small bowl, mix vinegar, sugar, chili sauce, garlic, cilantro and red pepper flakes.
In a larger bowl, mix cucumber, cabbage and scallions.
Pour the sauce on the vegetables and let sit for an hour or two in the fridge.
Sprinkle with peanuts before serving.

Coming back through these pictures again, I really like that you can see so much of color of the first part of the near-cave beside Cucumber Falls. I didn't notice that previously. You can see a bit more of the color in the picture below.

Believe me I am not bored, but do like macro work and enjoy the endless posibilities of composition and shape. It is suprising what you can come up with once the ceative juices start to flow.
