I took the image on the right with a Canon 350d. As is blindingly obvious I had been shooting something a little darker before and forgot to change the exposure. Never got round to deleting the image. Yesterday I downloaded the Beta version of Photoshop CS6 and had a play. I am not a Photoshop expert by any stretch of the imagination. I mostly work on images for the web and have used Fireworks for years and find older versions of Photoshop so uninituitive by comparison that I only use it if absolutely necessary. Yet it only took me a few minutes to change the image on the right to the one on the left. Heaven knows what a Photoshop expert could do with it.

 

Before this I would have said that the original was way too overexposed to be rescuable at all. Looks like I was wrong!
