My first entry into the book for my project, the Dryad was my test to see how well I could twist typical human anatomy to make something fantastical yet believable. Dryads, in Greek mythology, are typically female tree spirits, youthful in appearance, who look to be made out of wood, and typically have their life force linked to a tree.

My way of presenting this, was to use the grain of wood to mimic joints, having random twigs growing out from her body, to have vines crawling up her, rooted feet and fingers ect.

Done with fine liner and water colour pencil, this took about 1 hour.

A Nessie diptych I stitched up as a surprise for a far-away friend and fellow cryptid appreciator. You can see the metallic floss mixed with DMC pretty well at this angle. It's stitched on what I think is linen from my fabric stash.

Window Installation at Bear and Bird Gallery -- 160 Jay Street in Schenectady, New York -- October 2022.

We asked our old artist friend Skot Olsen, who now lives in Portland, Oregon and works as a tattoo artist - to do some silhouette illustrations of the creatures he creates. He provided us with a great trove of options so we could put together this fun window installation at our Jay Street location!

All of the illustrations are by Skot, but the window itself was laid out and built by me and my family! Brenda at Truly Yours Custom Framing in Glenville, NY helped out with a couple of the cut outs too!

We hope you got to see it in person and enjoy it!

‘Ghosties, Psychics and Cryptids. Oh my!’: A panel exploring the classics of skepticism, headed up by Richard Saunders (Dr Lynne Kelly, Dr Susan Blackmore, Sam Hutchinson, Beth Darlington, Carrie Poppy)

A friend of mine told me about these cryptids native to Michigan. Apparently witchy dogs are phantasms whose preferred prey are teenagers who park in secluded areas. I drew this on top of one of my photographs I took in a foggy park one night.

Since about 2006, Lake Windermere has produced about ten 'lake monster' sightings. Reports date back to the 1950s of a strange creature living in the waters of Windermere, just a few hours drive from the infamous Loch Ness. Our guest Andy McGrath, cryptozoology enthusiast and author of Beasts of Britain with over 25 years of research and obsession about the unknown creatures weighs in on Windermere’s lake monster named "Bownessie" named after the nearby town of Bowness.

An American Werewolf in…America?

There are evil fictional werewolves barking at the moon in the films, “An American Werewolf in London,” and “An American Werewolf in Paris,” but did you know many people believe one is roaming the wilds in real life in the northeastern parts of America? There’s allegedly been sightings by people who lived to tell the tale of the Beast of Bray Road for many years (and maybe some sightings by those who didn't live to tell the tale!).

The Beast of Bray Road, also known as the Bray Road Beast, is a fascinating cryptid that has been spotted multiple times in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, since the 1930s. This creature is generally referred to as a werewolf and there have been sightings in other areas ranging from southern Wisconsin to Vancouver Island, Canada.

An entry in my final book for my project "Creatures and Cryptids", a project inspired by fantasy creatures across the world. The project featured things from vampires to more obscure creatures like the "Krasue". This was my entry on mermaids, or merfolk. Taking different mythology into account, the version I decided to depict was a more sultry and violent pack hunter. I took real world animals into account, giving her gills and webbed limbs. I made her colours blend with that of sea weed, giving her more, while still beautiful, of an alien/ethereal look. I wanted the book to appear handmade and aged, so I intentionally smudged a few lines, and kept the paper withered. I chose this style after researching some amazing ways people have depicted mythological creatures through out history, such as medieval wood carvings, or even more recently, TV shows like "Grimm".

Done with fine liners and water colour pencils, this took about an hour for both pages, not including research time and brainstorming, which would push the whole time total to about 2 months,

“Faeries are nice beings, they grant wishes. Right?” – Unknown

While some certainly do nice things and some may even grant wishes; others still play harmless pranks to fool the mortals they encounter.

To most the fae are mischievous tricksters on the surface and no true threat. However the fae hierarchy stretches and grows like the roots of the oldest trees in the forest and for every bit of light and shimmer as branches raise high in the sky; there is dark and shadow as roots dig deep into the earth.

The Duskfall Court is the seat of shadow and where pranks are rarely harmless. Those who abide by its laws find themselves watched over by the nobility of the court.

Those who tread these woods best watch out because the woods watch back and will not hesitate to ensnare the unwary.
