Amtrak train 135 crosses the Connecticut River at Old Lyme, CT on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon.
I was scanning some negatives from the archives last week and found this image from a motorcycle trip I took in 2001. Remi, Tinto, and I went from Danang, where we were all living, to Saigon, via the Ho Chi Minh trail through the Central Highlands. This was taken on the first day when, maybe 70 km outside of Danang, we ran into this river. The road ran parallel along the other side of it for miles and miles, but there was no bridge in sight. We knew we had to get across it, and kept asking people, whose funky country central accent threw us (Remi and I both speak Vietnamese- he better than I). It sounded like people were saying "you have to take the bridge!" And I would say, "where's the bridge?" To which they would answer, "there's no bridge! (cackle cackle cackle) Take the bridge!" I finally realized that "bridge" and "boat" rendered in the local dialect were sounding kind of similar (normally easily distinguishable). It turned out we'd passed the dock ages before. We drove back until we finally found where there was a boat that ferried people across. It was a tiny thing, but the guy insisted that we roll our three motorcycles- plus the scooter of another guy- on to the planks he'd laid out across the boat (it was only about a meter wide). We spent the trip across discussing what we would do if and when the boat tipped and we had to watch our bikes go in the drink. Luckily, that didn't happen. I shot this to commemorate our successful crossing.

Crossing at the lights in the Krasiński Square in Warsaw New Town.
The New Town of Warsaw, established by the early 15th Century, is on the one hand only new in relation to the Old Town; on the other hand, it has been almost completely rebuilt since 1954, after being almost completely destroyed by German bombardment during the Warsaw Uprising.
Indeed, it had already been rebuilt in the late 17th and early 18th Centuries in what were then the latest styles after destruction by the Swedes; its late 20th Century reconstruction after destruction by the Germans was in fidelity to the baroque period.

The pedestrian crossing at the intersection between the town centre and Yu-Jeong's estate, crossing six or eight lanes of traffic.
The black shopfront to the right is a rather pleasant pastry shop where Chris and I occasionally had breakfast. My favourite was a thing like a danish pastry but with cheese and onion and other delightful stuff.

CN 516 holds short of Knowles Ave in New Richmond while the conductor repositions a bent crossing arm. There has been an intense blizzard raging over the Minneapolis Sub all day and 2515 east is the first train to traverse the line. The track is burried and 516 is operating as lite power in order to open the line. Knowles Avenue in New Richmond has been called in with a bent crossing arm. The 2515 has eased up next to the depot and the conductor is on his way out to move the crossing arm out of the way.
