We're taking a family vacation to Germany in less than two weeks. I've checked a few books out from the library on German history, and a few on WWII. This book also is a good reality check on the usual glorified Stephen Ambrose stuff. My dad was stationed in Germany as a US soldier during the Korean War in the early 1950s, lucky break. My mother is German and her epic story of survival during the war gives one another perspective. Her father, my grandfather, was a German soldier participated in the invasion of Poland and part of the German occupation of France. He died in 1941 under suspicious circumstances, more on that at a later time.
Really liked how this one came out...other than it getting a little grainy in the sky to the left. Not sure why. Either way...
Since the first edition on Nintendo Cube, I really enjoy this title.
Yesterday they published the european version of the last chapter ANIMAL CROSSING "let's go to the city".
Not too many improvements but always very relaxing.

This is an incredible pedestrian crossing at Shibuyia, Tokyo.
As usual in Japan, when all the 4 street lights for the vehicles are red, the pedestrian go in all for directions of the crossing, plus in the diagonal (as an X in the middle).
This is the most crowded crossing in the world.

Crossing Mnisose (“minne-show-she”) tells the story of one of America's first feminists, Sacajawea, and draws a line from a completely original view of Lewis and Clark to the present day, as descendants of the Dakota and Lakota Nations continue their fight for the Mnisose (or what Europeans named the “Missouri River”) and the lands that contain the burials of their ancestors. From celebrated playwright, activist, and attorney Mary Kathryn Nagle (Cherokee Nation), whose Manahatta captivated audiences at Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

The Clark Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge across the Mississippi River between West Alton, Missouri and Alton, Illinois. Named after explorer William Clark like the bridge it replaced, the cable-stayed bridge opened in 1994. It carries U.S. Route 67 across the river. It is the northernmost river crossing in the Saint Louis metropolitan area.
The new $85 million, 108-foot-wide bridge replaced the old Clark Bridge, which was only 20 feet wide. The truss bridge was built in 1928. The new bridge carries two lanes of divided traffic in each direction, as well as two bike lanes. The old bridge carried only two lanes (similar to the upstream Champ Clark Bridge). The bridge is sometimes referred to as the Super Bridge. Its construction was featured in a NOVA documentary entitled Super Bridge, which highlighted the challenges of building the bridge, especially during the Great Flood of 1993. Designed by Hanson Engineers under contract to Illinois Department of Transportation (DOT), the Clark Bridge was the first in the United States in which "such a light steel-framed cable-stayed design was combined with a cable saddle type of pylon." The bridge used 8,100 tons of structural steel; 44,100 cubic yards of concrete; and more than 160 miles of cable wrapped with four acres of yellow plastic piping. (source: wikipedia) View On Black

Sept 6, 2013. These signal lights are at the railroad crossing on Wallace Ave, just west of Lansdowne.
In the richness of the afternoon sunlight, the modern grade crossing in Canterbury, NH sits in silence. While these are active railroad tracks, trains operating on them are very rare, and some the line will be shut down for the winter season, allowing the lines to be used by snowmobilers. A far cry from the days when this line was a through route for passenger and freight trains.
Crossing the road can be a hair-raising experience in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) Vietnam. Pedestrian crossings appear to hold no authority and even the pavements offer no sanctury. When eventually the tsunami of motorcycles manages stop at a red light, it just appears to wait, daring you to still be on the road when the light switches back to green.
At Sawmill Golf Course in Stillwater, Minnesota. I loved the tattered look of the sign. It almost reminds me of a barber's pole.
Freedom Crossing Monument, Lewiston New York

Freedom Crossing Monument is located on the bank of the Niagara River in Lewiston, New York, and honors the courage of fugitive slaves who sought a new life of freedom in Canada, and to the local volunteers who protected and helped them on their journey across the Niagara River. It was dedicated on October 14, 2009.
It also highlights and celebrates the historical importance of the Niagara River as a gateway to freedom on the Underground Railroad during the mid-19th century.
It was the first project to receive the endorsement of the Niagara River Greenway Commission and the project conception, planning and fund raising was done entirely by volunteers of the Historical Association of Lewiston, Inc., the monument's sponsor. The Association advanced the concept of the monument in 2006.
Primary funding was provided by the Town of Lewiston with Niagara River Greenway Plan funds which were received from the New York Power Authority, and with supplemental private support from the Margaret L. Wendt Foundation and the KeyBank Foundation. No tax dollars were used. Total project cost was $230,000.
