Crocus

Canon EOS 70D + Sigma 180/3.5 Apo macro @ 1/800 f/3.5

A close up of one of the crocuses I planted in our communal garden when I first moved here nine years ago

Each year I post a photo of the first Prairie Crocus

(Anemone patens ) that I see. Back in 2016, I saw the first one on March 19. In 2018, it was as late as April 24. This year, April 13 and perhaps the last of the snow is disappearing.

When I'm not waiting for spring, you can find me on Twitter

Tommasini's crocus, early crocus, or woodland crocus

"Crocus tommasinianus [...] was named after the botanist Muzio G. Spirito de Tommasini (1794-1879). It is native to Bulgaria, Hungary, Albania, and the former Yugoslavia."

In the Botanical Garden of the University of Vienna, which is located right next to the Belvedere Garden

Crocuses, it turns out, are in the iris family. I don't have an album for crocuses, so will put this photo in my iris album.

Thank you for looking. Isn't God a great artist?

A break in the clouds highlights a lone purple crocus in the lawn.

Der Winter ist zurück!

Winter is back!

it's no secret that hoverflies also exist, I think there is one in the crocus, because bees look different. Don't they ?

Thanks for taking the time and looking at this, I really appreciate it!

Crocus angustifolius

Standing directly above this little flower, I pointed my macro lens downward, capturing its silky petals and its crimson stamens.

Saffron, the most expensive spice in the world, is made from the stigma of this little flower. Each flower only produces three stigmata and they are picked by hand, a labor intensive process. It takes approximately 75,000 individual stigmas to produce just one pound of saffron!

A floral image today to celebrate the first day of spring.

I hope everyone enjoys this image! :D

The veins of this yellow crocus made the back view more interesting than the front. The crocus season seemed short this year (in Surrey, BC) because the heavy rains took the blossoms too soon. Despite that, they were beautiful while they lasted and so welcome after a long winter.

J'adore le printemps et son explosion de couleurs.
