Crocus è un genere di piante da fiore stagionali della famiglia delle Iridaceae che comprende circa 100 specie di piante perenni che crescono dai cormi. Sono piante a bassa crescita, i cui steli floreali rimangono sotterranei, che portano fiori relativamente grandi bianchi, gialli, arancioni o viola e poi diventano dormienti dopo la fioritura

Crocus appartenenti alla famiglia delle Iridaceae dall’aspetto di piccole erbacee perenni dalla tipica infiorescenza a forma di coppa.
Il nome del genere (Crocus) deriva dal greco Kròkos (c'è un esplicito riferimento a questo fiore nell'Iliade di Omero – Libro XIV, versetto 347) che significa “filo di tessuto” e si riferisce ai lunghi stigmi ben visibili nella specie più conosciuta (e coltivata) di questo genere (Crocus sativus). La prima documentazione dell'uso di questo nome lo abbiamo da Teofrasto di Efeso filosofo e botanico greco antico nonché discepolo di Aristotele..
Altri testi traducono questo vocabolo (krokos) direttamente con “zafferano”, ma in realtà quest'ultima voce dovrebbe derivare dall’arabo Zaafran.
Il nome scientifico di questo genere è stato definito nel 1753 dal biologo e scrittore svedese, considerato il padre della moderna classificazione scientifica degli organismi viventi Ad un primo sguardo si può confondere il genere Crocus con il genere Colchicum, che ha un alto grado di tossicità e che tra l'altro appartiene anche ad un'altra famiglia: Liliaceae Le differenze sostanziali sono anche quelle tra le due famiglie : ossia il Colchicum ha 6 stami e l'ovario è superore.

I just hope people appreciate what I went through to give you this photo. Lying on my belly in wet grass in a churchyard trying to manually focus an old Helios lens is not my idea of fun. As all of us of a certain age with bad backs and rickety knees will know, it's not the getting down there, it's the getting back up again that's the tough part. Anyway I thought I'd get my crocus picture in for the year now before Flickr is inundated with them, which it most certainly will be. Much like bluebells in April there are certain subjects that we all try our luck at each year. So here's my 2021 crocus shot. I'm pretty sure it will be my last one for 2021 but never say never...

These crocuses bloom up to two week later than yellow crocuses (Crocus flavus).
Common names: Striped purple crocus, Dutch crocus.

I have expressed this message with a flower. They form a major part of my photography and a garden is where I get great enjoyment, especially if I haven’t had to dig it myself.
Just to let you all know who have communicated with me, have visited, commented or favoured my images over the last week that I will catch up with everyone. I have been in Hospital for about 6 days and had many tests, with more to come.
Wishing everyone all the very best, should be visiting all, I try not to leave anyone out.
