In the world of the ancient Near East, images and beings that combined human and animal qualities were thought to possess supernatural powers. This small yet potent figure, with its human face and serpentine-scaled body, probably represents such a creature, enlivened and charged with magical efficacy whether propitious or demonic. The monstrous figure's most enigmatic and distinctive features are the prominent scar across its face and the two holes pierced into its upper and lower lips. The scar may indicate that the figure was defaced, and the holes suggest that the lips were sealed, literally. Taken together, the scar and the sealed lips imply that the figure portrays a decommissioned being whose power is no longer operational. Having served its purpose, it may have been ritually muted and "killed."

Minneapolis, is the county seat of Hennepin County, and largest of the Twin Cities, the 14th-largest metropolitan area in the United States. The Metropolitan area contains approximately 3.8 million residents. As of 2013, Minneapolis is the largest city in the state of Minnesota and 46th-largest in the United States with 400,070 residents.

Minneapolis lies on both banks of the Mississippi River, just north of the river's confluence with the Minnesota River, and adjoins Saint Paul, the state's capital. The city is abundantly rich in water, with twenty lakes and wetlands, the Mississippi River, creeks and waterfalls, many connected by parkways in the Chain of Lakes and the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway. It was once the world's flour milling capital and a hub for timber. Today it is the primary business center between Chicago and Seattle, with Minneapolis proper containing America's fifth-highest concentration of Fortune 500 companies. As an integral link to the global economy, Minneapolis is categorized as a global city.

Minneapolis' name is attributed to the city's first schoolteacher who combined mini, a Dakota Sioux word for water, and polis, the Greek word for city.

As a young artist, Christopher Marley spent many years in tropical regions the world over where insect populations are flamboyant and profuse. His fascination with the creatures gradually prevailed over an initial phobia, leading to lengthy study of entomology and to arduous excursions to locales where the gaudiest beetles dwell.

Marley's work with insects reflects hs desire to impose order on a scuttling, clicking and swarming world. His minimalist arrangements of outrageous color invite inspection and wonder; preconceptions fade as we contemplate these creatures' breathtaking beauty. Although the ensembles are anything but organic, the colors are natural and not enhanced or digitally altered in any way.

Marley asserts that an increased appreciation for these jewel-like beasts can help slow the willful destruction of their habitat - which, unlike individual collection, is the only true threat an insect species faces.

This puzzle looked a little daunting once the border was assembled, especially since some of the bugs were duplicated. Close inspection revealed that although there were duplicates, they weren't exactly the same. Those tiny differences made it slightly easier.

We started in the bottom left corner, moving slowly along the row. Elsewhere we put together the more obvious sections, joining them to each other as we went along. The larger bugs were able to be placed in their approximate locations, which helped assembly, and after a relatively short time we'd made considerable progress.

Fiddly but fun, and complete.

screen grab from creature from the black lagoon. i recommend it for your kids.

For the third time in over a year I have come across this Wild Night-Creature. It screams with a bone chilling kind of donkey bray, moves fast and leaves a horrid stink behind. Being an avid hunter of endangered species and rare exotic creatures I though it might be a challenge bagging this one. I’m obsessed with a vision of this “thing” stuffed and mounted over my fireplace…”tonight’s the night I go out for the fight”

Traditionally, the Baku has been depicted as a creature that combines a Tapir's head with the eyes of a Rhino, the tail of an Ox and the paws/claws of a Tiger. More recently, the curls of hair that would normally be seen around the head are missing in newer carvings and the tusks have become larger, causing it to look more like the head of an Elephant.

For protection from nightmares, one would only have to recite "baku kurai! baku kurai! baku kurai" (獏食らい。獏食らい。獏食らい。/Eat, Baku! Eat, Baku! Eat Baku!) before sleeping or after waking from a bad dream. One could also write the kanji for baku (獏) on a slip of paper and place it under the pillow before bed for protection.

Although the original idea of a Baku is generally understood to have originated in China, the kanji for Baku (獏) is also used for a Tapir and the description of the spirit animal and it's abilities are currently considered to be found nowhere else but Japan.

This is an image from last night’s class about digital painting scenery in color. There’s a part of me that wants to finish the image, but such is life.

This image shows a detail from one of the creature designs in the film.

The image was created by concept artist Fredrik Dahl Tyskerud.
