The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death are a series of nineteen (twenty were originally constructed) intricately designed dollhouse-style dioramas created by Frances Glessner Lee (1878–1962), a pioneer in forensic science. Glessner Lee used her inheritance to establish a department of legal medicine at Harvard Medical School in 1936, and donated the first of the Nutshell Studies in 1946 for use in lectures on the subject of crime scene investigation. In 1966, the department was dissolved, and the dioramas went to the Maryland Medical Examiner’s Office in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S. where they are on permanent loan and still used for forensic seminars.

The dioramas are detailed representations of death scenes that are composites of actual cases, created by Glessner Lee on a 1 inch to 1 foot (1:12) scale. She attended autopsies to ensure accuracy, and her attention to detail extended to having a wall calendar include the pages after the month of the incident, constructing openable windows, and wearing out-of-date clothing to obtain realistically worn fabric. The dioramas show tawdry and, in many cases, disheveled living spaces very different from Glessner Lee's own background. The dead include prostitutes and victims of domestic violence.

Glessner Lee called them the Nutshell Studies because the purpose of a forensic investigation is said to be to "convict the guilty, clear the innocent, and find the truth in a nutshell." Students were instructed to study the scenes methodically—Glessner Lee suggested moving the eyes in a clockwise spiral—and draw conclusions from the visual evidence. At conferences hosted by Glessner Lee, prominent crime-scene investigators were given 90 minutes to study each diorama.

The cell phones come out as UP 4014 departs the yard in Evanston, WY in spectacular fashion, headed for Rock Springs, Rawlins, Laramie and eventually, Cheyenne.

Although many of the photographers had elected to forego the departure shot here and headed out to their first run-by locations, a pretty good crowd still remained, most of them locals. Although there were only a few people in my shot, there was a large group of people just behind me, not to mentioned several drones in the air, catching the action. The chase associated with the run from Evanston to Rock Springs was FAR less frenetic than the run from Ogden to Evanston the previous day. With the tracks no longer running parallel to the interstate, and the train taking a much more circuitous route, there was plenty of time for chasers to make it to multiple spots, and the spots were typically very wide open, offering a wide variety of angles, usually with very few interlopers in the scene. On this particular day, I shot 5 locations, and I'm not an experienced chaser at all. Take away the pacers and mobs of curious locals that we saw the day before, and the Big Boy chase through Wyoming was actually pretty enjoyable.

We celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied and multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.

We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.

We want to thank you for your interest in our work and thanks for visiting our work on Flickr, we do appreciate you and the contributions you make in furthering our interest in photography and on social media in general.

This is my 4th card for this challenge...the other 3 are in the bin! Finally created one that I like for this week’s SSS Flickr Challenge, and the theme is “Summertime Fun"!

In the summertime, I like to ‘Create’ with lots of bright, fun colors...I used circle die cuts and punches to create masks for the ‘bubbles’, and broke out this really fun die. A few clear sequins, and, that was it!

Thanks so much for stopping by ~

I think I should explain, this is a photo of a wall - nothing else - The image of the man on the right is mine and then superimposed on the wall and the elephant is also a photo I got in the zoo and he was in this pose. I just put it together. See the photo of the man HERE

Creating growing space in Savernake Forest.

Another late night spent at Middle Footscray to catch 9793V accelerate past and onwards to Murtoa to load. Led by C504, G514, CLF3 & BRM001, all 4 combined created a racket that could be heard well before the train was sighted.

G514 is fresh from a wreak rebuild which occurred in March 2023 at Rock View in NSW. This wreak saw CLP1 get badly damaged and scrapped. CLF3 is also fresh from a repaint after being in a full white livery for a couple of years.
