In Monaco in November 1960, the official visit of French president Charles de Gaulle became famous because of their exchange in connection with the incidents of October and more largely in connection with the nuclear experiments. The ambassador of France had suggested to Prince Rainier any meeting be avoided; but Prince Rainier did nothing to prevent the presence of Cousteau at the time of de Gaulle's visit to the oceanographical Museum. The President asked the Commander in a friendly way to be nice with his atomic scientists; Cousteau answered "No sir, it is your researchers that ought to be kind toward us."

This PBY-5A cn 2141 seen in Columbia California approx 1963. After a few years in fire fighting it went to the Cousteau Society in Los Angeles as N101CS. In June 1979 the PBY was doing high speed taxi tests to confirm no water leaks when it suddenly crashed and broke up. Phillipe Cousteau was at the controls and unfortunately he did not survive the accident. Slide scan from my collection.

I stole the title from an episode of Jacques Cousteau's adventures on TV, aired 40 or more years ago. I heard the phrase dubbed into Spanish with a fake French accent and it stuck, probably because it sounded so farfetched then, I didn't know what vermillion was. And when I saw this photo of a pink sea I had taken in Punta del Este, Uruguay, the phrase came back to me. Isn't life strange?
