Experimenting with how one could create a texture, based on the texture of bark, using different types of materials.
This piece explores the links and connections between humans and nature. Having recently visited Rome, I was inspired by the colossal statues of hands, and especially by Michelangelo's 'The Creation of Man' in the Sistine Chapel. The hands represent the stages of life - the first, a newly opened bud, is a child's hand, the second is two adult hands, painted with influence from an iris, the third is an aged hand, painted in more earthy colours to represent the ending of life. The pieces are created in fired craft crank, covered in underglaze colours and then glazed. Their bases are covered in iron oxide, and then topped with soil.
