i've been wearing tshirts and shorts for a few days because i've been at dan's without a selection of packed clothes, so when i got home, i put on a skirt and fancy shirt (and then a sweater because the windows are open and it's FREEZING. no i do not live in australia. yes it is summer here).

the forecast was calling for rain earlier for this afternoon, but based on the blue skies i can see through the curtain, i'm not sure this will happen (i hope not.)

The history of Muiden Castle begins with Count Floris V who built a stone castle at the mouth of the river back in 1280, when he gained command over an area that used to be part of the See of Utrecht. In 1296 Gerard van Velsen conspired together with Herman van Woerden, Gijsbrecht IV of Amstel, and several others to kidnap Floris V. The count was eventually imprisoned in Muiden Castle. After Floris V attempted to escape, Gerard personally killed the count on the 27th of June 1296 by stabbing him 20 times. The alleged cause of the conflict between the nobles was the rape of Gerard van Velsen's wife by Floris. In 1297 the castle was conquered by Willem van Mechelen, the Archbishop of Utrecht, and by the year 1300 the castle had been razed to the ground.

A hundred years later (ca. 1370-1386) the castle was rebuilt on the same spot based on the same plan, by Albert I, Duke of Bavaria, who at that time was also the Count of Holland and Zeeland.

The lion (Panthera leo) is a member of the family Felidae and one of four big cats in the genus Panthera. With exceptionally large males exceeding 250 kg (550 lb) in weight, it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger. Wild lions currently exist in sub-Saharan Africa and in Asia with a critically endangered remnant population in northwest India, having disappeared from North Africa, the Middle East, and western Asia in historic times. Until the late Pleistocene (about 10,000 years ago), the lion was the most widespread large land mammal beside humans. They were found in most of Africa, much of Eurasia from western Europe to India, and the Bering land bridge and, in the Americas, from the Yukon to Peru.

Lions live for approximately 10–14 years in the wild, while in captivity they can live over 20 years. They typically inhabit savanna and grassland, although they may take to bush and forest. Lions are unusually social compared to other cats. A pride of lions consists of related females and offspring and a small number of adult males. Groups of female lions typically hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates. The lion is an apex and keystone predator, although they will resort to scavenging if the opportunity arises. While lions, in general, do not selectively hunt humans, some have been known to become man-eaters and seek human prey.

Counting stars by candlelight, all are dim but one is bright;

The spiral light of venus, rising first and shining best,

On, from the northwest corner, of a brand new crescent moon,

While crickets and cicadas sing, a rare and different tune,

Terrapin station.

I made this fun little guy but did a bit different on the face, arms and whites of the shoes using "Glow in the Dark" yarn by Bernat!

While I was sitting in the back of my sister's car two weeks ago I took this photo of street lights. No post-process here.

LIVE at the Big E Springfield MASS 10-04-2015

This is a representation of what I see in the morning and the evening. The crows fly east in the morning and they fly west in the evenings. Large groups of them. I wonder where they are going? And I have been wanting to get a picture of this behavior.

William James "Count" Basie - "The Kid from Red Bank"

Native son of Red Bank, New Jersey, Jazz Musician, Legendary Band Leader.

This bust of the "Count" is located next to the historic Red Bank Train Station.

As a child, I remember challenging myself to count to 1000, 1 million, or 1 billion. I don’t think I ever made it.

Why do we aimlessly count? How long would it take to count to a billion?

Counting to a Billion is a device created to fulfill the desire to count. The electronics consists of a microcontroller, a speech module, and a speaker powered by a rechargeable battery. There is no/off switch. The voice will keep counting when the device is unplugged and if the battery is drained, the count will pick up where it left off when the battery recharges. The voice begins counting at one, two, three and continues counting up until it reaches one billion at which point in time it will stop.

If it took a second to utter each string of numbers, it would take 1 billion seconds or 31.7 years for the device to reach its end. But since it takes more than a second to vocalize many of the numbers in the sequence, it may take upwards of 60 years to complete.

The unit is housed in a solid block of aluminum, cnc milled into a vessel that was designed to withstand substantial abuse over many years.

Counting to a Billion is for sale as an edition of 5.

Materials: Aluminum, custom electronics

Dimensions: 4” (10cm) diameter, 6” (15cm) height, freestanding.

The Zanesville Post Office and Federal Building is significant as displaying the distinct characteristics of the Beaux Arts style of architecture in Zanesville and exhibiting many products such as terra cotta and art tile representing many of the local industries that flourished in the area during the early 20th century. Through its architecture the building reflects the turn-of-the-century concept of the federal government that public buildings should be monumental and attractive while representing both American democratic ideals as well as a local understanding of architectural styles.

James Knox Taylor was the Supervising Architect of the Treasury Department from 1897-1912, the branch of government that controlled the postal service until 1939. He favored individually designed buildings that reflected classical American traditions. Taylor also thought that government buildings should be constructed of quality materials that would endure. While Taylor's office was responsible for plans of smaller post offices, the designing of larger post offices was often contracted to outside architects. The Zanesville Post Office was of the latter category, and was contracted to Cleveland architect George Francis Hammond. Hammond, a native Bostonian and MIT graduate, had his own architectural practice in Boston from 1884 until he moved to Cleveland about 1900. Hammond's work shows a broad knowledge and interpretation of classical styles. Other buildings designed by Hammond include the Hollenden Hotel in Cleveland, and later the Ohio Bell Building, the First Christian Science Church, and Lakeside Hospital in Cleveland, the McKinley High School in Canton, and a Master Plan and five buildings for Kent State University.

The building displays characteristics of the Beaux Arts style through its grandiose composition, two story projecting pavilion, paired columns and pilasters, exuberance of classical detail, and enriched entablature topped by tall parapet. On its interior the building displays a rich variety of local clay products including art tile and terra cotta produced by area manufacturers including the Mosaic Tile Company of Zanesville and Ludowici-Celadon of nearby Perry County.
