Being a January born

Being a true Aquarian

Is no less than fun!

Here is a picture taken from a pull-off along US 2 where it passes from Schoolcraft County into Mackinac County. If you recall all those genealogy posts I did about my genetic ancestry a few years back, you might remember that Mackinac County is my genetic ancestral homeland, and I always enjoy passing through here. That's not why I'm posting this, though. It's kind of a nothing picture, and I wouldn't even bother with it except it happens to pop up at a convenient moment to make one of those procedural announcements only I ever care about.

I don't know who pays attention to albums on this site, but those who do might have noticed my obsessive tendency to categorize all these photos in about fifty different ways using 1,095 albums sorted into 24 collections. I do this for a couple of reasons. One, it helps me find things when I'm looking for one of the (as of right now) 16,176 photos I've posted on here. Two, I think that kind of thing is fun.

One of my favorite ways to sort these photos is to divide them up by state. I've been lucky enough to have visited every state in the Union, and I've given each of these United States its very own state album. But I spend more time in some states than others -- for instance, the state where I live -- and after a while the number of pictures in a state album becomes too unwieldy. I've set my limit at a thousand photos.

I don't want to stop posting photos to the state album, though, so here's what I do. Once a state album reaches a thousand photos, I create a separate collection where all the pictures from that state are divided up into albums dedicated to counties. So far, I've only done that twice, for Illinois, where I live, and Kentucky, where I grew up and where most of my family still lives. (Things are more complicated with Illinois, because I've posted 2,121 pictures just from the the city of Chicago, plus probably another 700 or so from greater Cook County. But I'm trying to keep this explanation simple.)

But if you glance over there to the right, you'll notice that this is the 999th photo posted to the Michigan album, which means it's time to break those guys out, too. I went ahead and did that yesterday. So if you're into exploring some random internet dude's obsessive tendency to sort things geographically, you can look at the Michigan by County collection here.

Some numbers: Of Michigan's 82 counties, I have posted pictures from 45. I've posted the most pictures, 243, from Alger County (Munising and Pictured Rocks), followed by 104 pictures from Mackinac County (Mackinac Island and St. Ignace), 87 pictures from Keweenaw County (Isle Royale National Park), 86 pictures from Mason County (Ludington and the Nordhouse Dunes), and 65 pictures from Leelenau County (Sleeping Bear Dunes). Berrien County, the county occupying Michigan's southwest corner and therefore the Michigan county nearest to us, only has 54 pictures. Shiawassee County, the county where I came into this world, only has five pictures, because I've barely ever been there.

Following Michigan, the next state in line for this treatment is Colorado, where we've vacationed enough for me to post 778 pictures. After that, it's Indiana with 766 pictures, California with 684 pictures, and Texas with 501 pictures. The state least likely to ever receive this treatment is Delaware, which has only 33 pictures. Delaware has only three counties, though, so maybe I'll just go ahead and break them out anyway.
