First National Bank. The name alone tells you about the company. They take themselves seriously, and... their logo shows no sign of it. The words beneath the logo are in a standard computer font, and the logo has more then a couple issues. The forced ligature between the 'F' and 'n' makes the bottom of the logo look like it says 'mb', not 'Fnb'. The counterspace in the 'b' is off-center, and because it's not actually knocked out and is instead an oval, at smaller sizes the b would look like a white blob.

 

The drop shadow doesn't exactly hurt the design, but also doesn't help it in the slightest. It takes what is already a bad logo and just makes it look like it was thrown into Adobe Photoshop. The modifications to the 'F' are both distracting and puzzling - the crossbar on the 'f' is a much more informal take on the letter then the rest of the logo, but the hardness of the continuation of the top of the F is completely at odds to the roundness of the font.

 

Overall, it seems that the designer of this logo knew just enough about typography to be dangerous. All the 'fancy' things that a designer learns that they can do are all stuffed into this logo.

No more window! Added a stove and a tremendous amount of storage+counterspace to this side. Added an industrial vent over the stove, that vents through the last cabinet on the upper right cabinet. Love my "jolly roger" skull and crossbones mat.

This is such a cute alternative to a bar for a small space.

a full size refrigerator stocked with my stuff, a stereo system on top of the fridge and a fan in the summer, heater in the winter. (i am in the basement BUT it is the best room in the house, i did not renovate the back half yet. it contains more storage, counterspace that is higher for cutting, the laundry and a full bathroom.

My kitchen doesn't have any built in counterspace so I bought this IKEA counter as a workstation and storage for pots and pans. This is a view of my countertop. I keep some serving bowls out on the right as well as my sugar bowl, pepper mills, a recipe that I'm going to be cooking, and some tea in a little blue will transferware bowl. I swap the vintage fan out on the left for my rice cooker or foreman grill when needed, but it's a handy addition in the summer. I'd like to better organize the stuff that's hanging from hooks -- it doesn't look that attractive to me. The magnetic strip on the right is handy. It holds my knives and kitchen scissors. I clipped my grocery list to it with a binder clip, and sometimes clip recipes there too. A Todd Boontje serving tray from Target was a christmas gift. I use it when we have breakfast in bed!

This picture is taken from the northeast side of the room, looking towards the dining room door and the "garbage room" door.

 

The kitchen is huge, with lots of storage for food, appliances, and counterspace for cooking. There is a dishwasher, double sink with garbage disposal, and vintage stove with 6 burners, two small ovens, and two broilers. This is a dream to cook in!

The old kitchen had a dropped ceiling with the older fluorescent style lighting, laminate tops, and minimal counterspace....... the owners wanted a kitchen they could comfortably entertain in..a litte more open , and extra cabinets as well as built in appliances

Responding to the historical erasure and scarcity of informal community spaces across the city, the Pavilion references and pays homage to existing and erased places that have held communities over time and continue to do so today. Among them are: some of the first mosques built in the city, such as Fazl Mosque and East London Mosque, cooperative bookshops including Centerprise, Hackney; entertainment and cultural sites including The Four Aces Club on Dalston Lane, The Mangrove restaurant and the Notting Hill Carnival. The forms in the Pavilion are a result of abstracting, superimposing and splicing elements from architectures that vary in scales of intimacy, translating the shapes of London into the Pavilion structure in Kensington Gardens. Where these forms meet, they create a new place for gathering in the Pavilion.

The Pavilion is built of reclaimed steel, cork and timber covered with micro-cement. The varying textures, hues of pink and brown are drawn directly from the architecture of London and reference changes in quality of light.

 

For the first time in the history of this commission, four Fragments of the Pavilion are placed in partner organisations whose work has inspired the design of the Pavilion: one of the first Black publishers and booksellers in the UK New Beacon Books in Finsbury Park, a multi-purpose venue and community centre The Tabernacle in Notting Hill, arts centre the Albany in Deptford and the new Becontree Forever Arts and Culture Hub at Valence Library in Barking and Dagenham, which was established this year to commemorate the centenary of the UK’s largest council housing estate. These Fragments support the everyday operations of these organisations while enabling and honouring gatherings of local communities that they have supported for years. A gesture of decentralising architecture to include a multitude of voices, the Fragments extend out into the city the principals on which the Pavilion was designed.

Since its inception, the Pavilion has become an established home for Serpentine’s Live Programmes. This year the Pavilion will also host a specially commissioned sound programme Listening to the City that features work by artists including Ain Bailey and Jay Bernard, connecting visitors to the stories and sounds of selected London neighbourhoods. The design process has also extended into thinking through more equitable, sustainable and imaginative institutional structures by creating Support Structures for Support Structures, a grant and fellowship programme that supports artists who work in, support and hold communities in London through their work.

This spacious kitchen area gives plenty of room to let the house chef work their magic. The built-in microwave saves counterspace and also serves as a overhead fan for the stove. This space is so large, we even have a nice little breakfast table setup in the kitchen just to the left of this picture.

SACHET DISCRET: When I was a kid, these bags could be found at virtually every public toilet in Switzerland. The "flower counters" constitute one of my earliest type memories – I remember being quite fascinated about them.

7:30 A.M in the morning.

 

Our bathroom is small, there's no counterspace next to the sink so most of our toiletries are crammed into shelves behind the mirror. Our bathtub is dated with an odd showerhead. The toilet flushes slowly. There is a window with an old wooden frame over the toilet that creaks loudly when opened.

 

I love the bathroom though and the early morning rituals.

 

Now the mornings are relaxing and slow. Just the sound of the coffeemaker, the birds in the trees outside the windows and The wooden floors creaking under Eric's feet as he goes through his morning routine.

“The Pavilion’s design is based on past and present places of meeting, organising and belonging across several London neighbourhoods significant to diasporic and cross-cultural communities, including Brixton, Hoxton, Tower Hamlets, Edgware Road, Barking and Dagenham and Peckham, among others. Responding to the historical erasure and scarcity of informal community spaces across the city, the Pavilion references and pays homage to existing and erased places that have held communities over time and continue to do so today. Among them are: some of the first mosques built in the city, such as Fazl Mosque and East London Mosque, cooperative bookshops including Centerprise, Hackney; entertainment and cultural sites including The Four Aces Club on Dalston Lane, The Mangrove restaurant and the Notting Hill Carnival. The forms in the Pavilion are a result of abstracting, superimposing and splicing elements from architectures that vary in scales of intimacy, translating the shapes of London into the Pavilion structure in Kensington Gardens. Where these forms meet, they create a new place for gathering in the Pavilion.

The Pavilion is built of reclaimed steel, cork and timber covered with micro-cement. The varying textures, hues of pink and brown are drawn directly from the architecture of London and reference changes in quality of light.

 

For the first time in the history of this commission, four Fragments of the Pavilion are placed in partner organisations whose work has inspired the design of the Pavilion: one of the first Black publishers and booksellers in the UK New Beacon Books in Finsbury Park, a multi-purpose venue and community centre The Tabernacle in Notting Hill, arts centre the Albany in Deptford and the new Becontree Forever Arts and Culture Hub at Valence Library in Barking and Dagenham, which was established this year to commemorate the centenary of the UK’s largest council housing estate. These Fragments support the everyday operations of these organisations while enabling and honouring gatherings of local communities that they have supported for years. A gesture of decentralising architecture to include a multitude of voices, the Fragments extend out into the city the principals on which the Pavilion was designed.

Since its inception, the Pavilion has become an established home for Serpentine’s Live Programmes. This year the Pavilion will also host a specially commissioned sound programme Listening to the City that features work by artists including Ain Bailey and Jay Bernard, connecting visitors to the stories and sounds of selected London neighbourhoods. The design process has also extended into thinking through more equitable, sustainable and imaginative institutional structures by creating Support Structures for Support Structures, a grant and fellowship programme that supports artists who work in, support and hold communities in London through their work.

 

Sumayya Vally of Counterspace said of the design:

“My practice, and this Pavilion, is centred around amplifying and collaborating with multiple and diverse voices from many different histories; with an interest in themes of identity, community, belonging and gathering. The past year has drawn these themes sharply into focus and has allowed me the space to reflect on the incredible generosity of the communities that have been integral to this Pavilion. This has given rise to several initiatives that extend the duration, scale and reach of the Pavilion beyond its physical lifespan. The contemporary kitchen has under-cabinet lighting, microwave, and copious counterspace.

This is a picture of our old kitchen. No counterspace, no storage, LOTS of clutter.

Awkward layout, little counterspace, little storage space, poorly sized and placed windows. Time for a serious upgrade!!!

I've always (well, for a while, at least) wanted a KitchenAid stand mixer, but I knew I wanted to leave it out on the counter (these beasts are heavy!) and I didn't have enough counterspace in the old kitchen, so I knew a present to myself as soon as the kitchen remodel was done was going to be one of the beauties. The toughest part was picking out a color. John actually picked it out because I couldn't narrow it down - it's the Cinnamon Gloss - a nice deep, dark red. Neither of use were fans of the bright "Empire" red. (not that it's a bad color, it just didn't go with our kitchen as much).

i did this project in 2006 called omgsnax, where i tried one new recipe a week for the entire year. i had a website set up for it, took lots of photos, tried a bunch of new things i'd never tried, & although the best posts came when i fucked up recipes or they tasted like ass (sweet potato gnocchi, i'm looking at you), i actually added quite a few new dishes to my repertoire that i still make these days.

 

i miss the food blog b/c it was fun & i do love me a project every now & then, but what really struck me as i paged through the old posts & copied recipes into a book i can use in the kitchen (b/c until i get a laptop, i'm unfortunately paper-bound while cooking) is how little i knew about food then. i'd never used a shallot before, or roasted a bell pepper. i had no idea what i was doing with some dishes & it was so obvious & hilarious.

 

i'm getting back into cooking more these days b/c the kitchen is finally in good shape, we have a working sink, a butcher block, adequate counterspace, & now that all the annoying holiday stuff is far behind us, i'm actually home most nights to cook. during what would have been my winter break were i still in school, friends came over a lot to be fed (especially ian & caleb & staci & sometimes even sarah) & i really got back into the habit of making dinner every night. cooking is something i really love, especially when it goes right, & so pictured here is a galette i made based on a recipe from smitten kitchen. it has onions (which should have been caramelized but which i was too hungry to finish up properly), squash, yams, turnips, & fontina cheese in it, & it was damn good.

  

one time a few months ago, daniel told me that he misses omgsnax & thinks i should consider writing a cookbook. of course i don't usually make up my own recipes so i don't think that'd really fly, but it did sound like an awfully fun project to take on & one day i might consider it.

The stack of phone books at Peppers....odd that they have this giant stack, and no payphone. They have the smallest kitchen area, they don't even have full size refrigerators...but they have counterspace for 15 phonebooks.
