found in album with photos dated 1897-1901

I came by these wonderful old B & W photos by way of my aunt. She was at a Scrap Booking convention/ retreat in the Red Woods of northern Calif. This woman sitting at the same table as my aunt, threw out three old photo albums full of family photos & post cards from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. The lady said the albums once belonged to her mother in law and since she didn't know the people in the photos she tossed the albums in the trash. My aunt later went dumpster diving and initially gave me one album and she kept the other two, then had a change of mind and gave me the other two albums.

You don't have to know the people to enjoy the photos. Well just like the old sayings go, "A picture is worth a 1000 words", or "One man's trash is another man's treasure"

Hey I could use a little help. If you recognize people or places or vehicles please speak up, add your comments please.

(Update! PIcked up a copy of it on eBay from a seller in San Rafael, CA for about $15 - It's in better condition than my Uncle John's - Thanks for the suggestion, Uncle John! I am happy! ^_^;)

I first read it when I was 9 or so when I was at my Uncle John's house.

This is the book that accompanies National Lampoon's "Animal House" film from 1978.

This is one of my favorite comedy films, and not just for John Belushi's unequalled performance as "Bluto" Blutarsky.

I wasn't old enough to appreciate it when it first came out, let alone see it. (First saw it on cable, and a rare mostly uncut version on KTXL TV-40 (Sacramento, CA) when I was a teenager - I eventually owned it on video.)

I have two version on DVD - the initial basic release and the "Double Secret Probation" special edition.

This book brought back memories, primarily when I read out loud a certain scene, and freaked my parents out. (Clue: A main character is having a debate between both sides of his conscience, with the bad side encouraging him to "F*** her..." ^_^;)

Uncle John has let me borrow it. I'll seek out a copy of it online, and hope it doesn't set me back too much. I've heard of copies of this in good condition going for US$80.00

I was also fortunate enough to see the short-lived TV tie-in series, "Delta House" when it ran on ABC shortly after the movie came out.

TV Trivia: John Vernon "Dean Wormer" and Stephen Furst "Kent Dorfman/Flounder" James "Hoover" Widdoes, and Bruce McGill "Daniel Simpson Day/D-Day" reprised their film character roles for the TV series.

True Story: I actually wore a bedsheet toga to go to a "toga party" dance at the CSU Stanislaus campus with friends of mine, but by the time we got there, the dance was more or less deserted, or had barely got underway... Gah.

"P.O. Bosx, Shartlessville, PA at the famous Shartlesville Hotel. A little old style store that's almost a museum. Featuring Dutch gifts, antiques 'Hex' signs, Dutch foods and delicacies."

Newspapers had a nice run and all but it appears that they're time of delivering news to the world is almost over. The concept of actually reading the news simply can't compete with hot female news anchors reading it to us and nobody thinks Garfield is funny anymore. And seriously ... who uses coupons?

Unexpected art at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport: an underground sound and light experience. "The Light Tunnel installation features glass panels with sand-blasted artwork created by Foxfire Glass of Pontiac, Mich., which are illuminated by nearly 9,000 ft. of LED lighting designed—and synchronized to an original score —by Mills James of Columbus, Ohio. The display is one of the first, large scale uses of color-changing LED lighting in the United States." www.metroairport.com/TravelerInfo/GeneralInfo/CoolStuff/T...

Floriston, Calif. 1917

The town of Floriston in Northern Calif. was built by the Floriston Pulp and Paper Company in 1899 to house employees of their paper mill. It was said to be the second largest paper mill in the world in its time, with 500 employees.

Title of this is a reference to the King James Version of 1 Corinthians 13:12, which reads, "For now we see through a glass, darkly, but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known." According to answers.com, the meaning of the verse is, To see "through a glass" -- a mirror -- "darkly" is to have an obscure or imperfect vision of reality. The expression comes from the writings of the Apostle Paul; he explains that we do not now see clearly, but at the end of time, we will do so.

The pictures within the square represent obscure or imperfect vision of reality. The whole thing itself -- the three dimensional square and the images in it -- is inspired by psychedelic rock band Traffic's CD covers for the albums The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys and Shoot Out at the Fantasy Factory. I guess the whole thing could be psychedelic in a way. Guess the images are familiar as well as not so familiar to the public. The beetle with the face on its back and the creature with a face and two legs both represent uncertainty because perople are uncertain as to what the future of this nation looks like, except for maybe looking like something surreal like the two images do. The cross -- being the centerpiece -- not only represents Christianity, but also the return, or second coming, of Christ. It has to do with the fact that at the end of time, we'll see clearly even though we may not at the moment. The gun represents war these day and its effect on the economy. Those fighting for this country probably shoot to kill, but I wonder if they shoot to spend for the government to spend more as well. And the moon and the "Z" on the four circles that are close to each other both represent solitude and separation from chaos. The latter perhaps being an allegory to God because when His people spend time with Him, especially indoors, they are typically, in a good way, cut off from this corrupt world. Think I explained it all pretty well.

The Traffic CDs I mentioned can be found here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Low_Spark_of_High_Heeled_Boys here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoot_Out_at_the_Fantasy_Factory

Guess that's it.

Unboxed, it came like this. It's going to be fun finding a way to keep him standing up. He didn't want to stand up when posing him on my car for this photo.

The story went like this (Bear with me, I'm remembering what I read in Bob Woodward's classic "Wired" book) - In the early episodes of the first season of SNL, the 3rd one, where Rob Reiner was hosting, John Belushi came on stage in a bee costume like this one, interrupting "Meathead's" opening monologue. When the future film director remarked about how he hated working with bees, John Belushi countered with how it felt, as an up-and-coming actor, to have to portray a bee. (It was a running gag in the first few episodes of the season)

Suffice, after that episode, the bees were there to stay for a while, at least. John Belushi hated the bee costumes.

He and Dan Aykroyd remarked about it, and they made a promise to each other - Whoever died first, the surviving one would play the song "2000 Pound Bee," by The Ventures at the other's funeral.

When John Belushi died on March 5, 1982, of drug-related causes, Dan Aykroyd, who would lead the funeral procession out to Martha's Vineyard on his motorcycle, played "2000 Pound Bee" at John Belushi's funeral service.

As his tombstone epitaph said, "he gave us laugher" - Alas, he was taken too soon...
