Donner Lake Statue in Truckee, CA 1921

The memorial statue of the pioneer family was unveiled on the spot on June 6, 1918, its figures standing atop a stone pedestal 22 feet high, the same depth as the Donner Party's snow. ... Three elderly survivors attended its dedication.

Back in 1846 it wasn't so easy, as the group of pioneers known as the Donner Party discovered.

They didn't plan well for what turned out to be the World's Worst Road Trip. The families, some 87 immigrants, embarked in their wagon train into the mountains too close to winter, and stalled out near Donner Lake, with snow 22 feet deep in places. Only 48 were rescued the following Spring. Survivors provided accounts of starvation and of some of the group resorting to cannibalism.

I came by these wonderful old B & W photos by way of my aunt. She was at a Scrap Booking convention/ retreat in the Red Woods of northern Calif. This woman sitting at the same table as my aunt, threw out three old photo albums full of family photos & post cards from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. The lady said the albums once belonged to her mother in law and since she didn't know the people in the photos she tossed the albums in the trash. My aunt later went dumpster diving and initially gave me one album and she kept the other two, then had a change of mind and gave me the other two albums.

You don't have to know the people to enjoy the photos. Well just like the old sayings go, "A picture is worth a 1000 words", or "One man's trash is another man's treasure"

Hey I could use a little help. If you recognize people or places or vehicles please speak up, add your comments please.

Two part series I recall seeing at a Comics and Comix store in Citrus Heights, CA back in the mid/late 1980s, before I knew what the hell it was about, only that the character designs looked like something out of Robotech. ^_^;

Boy meets girl. Boy meets friend who has a super-cool futuristic bike. Friend gets killed because he showed his friend what he wasn't supposed to see. Boy gets caught up in this, and is fleeing for his life, and wants the truth known. Fun, though quite sad.

Harmony Gold bought the film, screwed it up by adding meaningless crap scenes from Robotech, and commissioned a studio in Japan to shoot a "happy ending" to it, in order to turn it into the "Robotech: The Untold Story" movie Gah....)

See the original, though it's probably long out of print with the "demise" of ADV Films - Find those DVDs if you can, and perhaps Megazone 23 Part 2 as well!

These two books comprise a photo-novel version of the first OAV film.

The book on the left features our "hero", Shogo Yahagi, and the book on the right features the girl he picks up at the beginning, Yui Takenaka

Good old 1980s sci-fi mecha with a twist goodness... ^_^;

Now THIS was what made winning the drawing worthwhile. (I swear, I had a feeling of "What if I did win the drawing?", but I dismissed it - When I heard my name called (and mispronounced) over the PA system, I totally freaked out - "Oh, My GOD!!!", and freaked out a few people near me. ^_^;

Anyway, this set comprises the entire first series figure release, Columbia (A Groupie), portrayed by "Little Nell" Campbell, Dr. Frank N. Furter (A Scientist - "He's the hero -- That's right, the hero!" ^_^;), portrayed by the one-and-only, Tim Curry (It kind of broke my heart somewhat when I saw him on some Poirot show on public TV where he looked really old and overweight. ~_~;), and of course, Riff Raff (A "faithful" handyman), portrayed by the one who brought us this cult classic, the incomparable Richard O'Brien.

Oh, they had a bigger figure of Dr. Frank N. Furter, in his surgical smock from the Rocky Horror birth scene ("Tonight, my unconventional conventionalists...") - Oh, I wanted that one too... Maybe they'll still have it in December... Oh, man...

I'm happy for what I have, in any case.

A good day out, indeed. It could have been better in some aspects, but I won't complain - At least I was once again, in the right place, at the right time. I seem to have a knack for that lately. ^_^;

Take a look at some cools stuff from some of my contacts. Check them out, and let them know how good they are.

This very cool model of an Asian-style eatery - complete with cushions, mats, and flagstones - was on display in a backalley shop in Seoul's Insa-dong arts district. The DPRK may have the best dioramas, but the ROK is no slouch when it comes to models. (Of the artistic variety, eh, not governments...heh heh) ;-)

Had a blast at the Naples Zoo Wedding Photo Shootout. It was like a candy store and I could have whatever I wanted!

A fun fringe benefit to my job is that I get to play with lots of toys. Here's I'm holding a random chunk of (somewhat dusty and finger-printed) aerogel that I use for demos and to show clients (we use it for insulation, mostly)

On my way from one dance club to another, in search of a real party.
