Inspired both by the BBC adaptation of Great Expectations and a rare day without rain we decided to explore the heart of Dickens country.
The great nose of marshes that sticks out north of Rochester along the southern shore of the Thames estuary is associated with Great Expectations. It is where the real Dickens and the fictional Pip grew up. Cooling Church, pictured, is the scene of the opening scene where Pip is accosted by Magwitch and scared into stealing for him.
The recent adaptation had quite a heavy CGI look to it, which I have tried to approximate

Friday evening before a Bank holiday weekend -- I thought this guy looked as if he'd had a long, tiring day on the pedals.

When LA natives brag to people from other cities, one of the things that comes up is "mountains to the sea." The idea is that in the winter you can hit the surf in the morning and be on the slopes in the afternoon, or vice versa. It's a story we like to tell, and it happens to be true. On the 6th I went with my friend Stalkerazzi to help on an assignment from his day job (he's a local college's staff photog): get shots of the school mascot, on the same day, playing in both the sand and the snow. We hit Mt. Baldy and Santa Monica, which if you check a map are just about 60 miles from each other.
I wore the tiger suit. Needless to say, it was a blast posing as the mascot. The weather was glorious, both at Baldy and at Santa Monica, and families were out playing at both locations. Lots of strangers wanted shots with the Tiger, of course and I was happy to oblige. We even ran into a member of the college faculty at Baldy, who you can see on the Oxy College story here:
Here's another shot, juxtaposing the sand and snow:

Note, because I know people are going to ask: My 365 is a chronicle, not an inflexible set of rules. I obviously didn't take this picture, but I participated in its creation.
