1837 entwickelte der Grobschmied John Deere (* 7. Februar 1804 in Rutland (Vermont), † 17. this is one of the dragons that visited me last summer and he really wasn’t bothered about how close i got – if only i had an mpe! (it’s a cool macro lens)

he also started doing these movements (see below) – there was another male very close by at the time – does anyone know what he was doing?

also the very last shot is to see if someone can ID him for me – he was just by the dragons, but didn’t stay still for long!

I spotted this insect on the Hostas just as I came home from my afternoon walk with the dog. It's been a foggy drizzly kind of day, just right for some cool macro shots. Hope you like!

First test with focus stacking. Only now learned that this is a viable method for creating cool macro shots (amongs others) and wanted to give this a try.

This is composed of 6 shots, using Helicon Focus (www.heliconsoft.com/heliconfocus.html), which has a free 30 day trial. Very easy to use.

As you can see there's still some spots that are blurry, which I think means I need more shots. Learning is fun!

ok, so that’s a slightly modified paraphrase of what i yelled when i found this little beast in my sink one night in africa. sheesh! can’t a girl brush her teeth in peace? apparently not.

actually, this thing was really neat looking, and i remember thinking to myself “ooooooh, cool macro!”. but it had the rather unfortunate habit of holding completely still for unpredictable but long-ish amounts of time, then suddenly leaping 8 inches into the air like some sort of reptilian jackie chan. a small freak-out later, i abandoned my macro dreams and got reacquainted with my zoom lens.

so, bad light, bad angle…too bad.

Shot on iPhone 4.

I had to go to Sydney today to interview a writer (Nicholas Sparks) and a film director (Scott Hicks). That meant an early morning, which is not good because I've had a week of early mornings in the battle with Lucy the possum who is terrorising my house.

So far what I've learnt about Lucy the possum is that she's not very smart; and yet she's out-smarting me.

As for today's pic, I really wanted to get a shot out the window in the style of 365 mate Giovanni, but my shots didn't look anywhere near as good from my little window way at the back. The top shot was taken though the window of the cab at 5.30am. The cab driver quite liked the idea of a 365. And I've added an instagram architecture shot in comments I took in Sydney today because, well, I like it.

And for my 365 mates, he's a story that will give you nightmares. Dennis Eagles is in our 365 (he lives in Brisbane, like me) for those who don't know him. He does wicked macros. Anyway, he falls asleep on the couch the other night and wakes up at 11.50pm knowing he hasn't taken a picture. In the end, he does a cool macro just in time. The Exif shows he shot it at 11.59:49. That 11 secs up his sleeve kept him in the game.

I'll catch up with you guys tomorrow. I'm beat and have to get a few hours sleep before Lucy starts mucking up.

Looking down at the seat, I found an interesting pattern and got a cool macro ...

Just something i thought would be a cool macro.

There's nothing really special about it.

The 2nd bread and butter lens for most pros and photojournalists. The EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L weighs 980g! (too heavy for me!). It comes with a huge lens hood which makes it look very serious and cool! :) Macro capabilities is impressive. Weathershielded from dust and moisture/water. Lens code UX.

The zoom range suits my shooting style on crop sensor (40D). Compared to the cheaper EFS 17-55mm f/2.8 IS, it is not as good in terms of sharpness and IQ. The 17-55mm lens is actually quite a bit better than this heavy lens, but being an EFS lens, non "L" and lower build quality, people's perception is lower range and thus, resale value suffers and many opt for the 24-70 L lens instead. The "real" photographers knows better and buys the EFS 17-55mm. It is probably the best all-rounder / standard zoom lens for Canon.

The (rumored) replacement EF 24-70mm f/2.8 IS L should take back the crown as the best Canon standard zoom lens (and hopefully reduce some weight as well).

I've taken inspiration from malodora, with her use of older canes... and from rubarb, and TinaT (and many others!) with their 3D flowers.

Not colors I'm fond of (hence the reason this was an unused, older cane!) but it turned out kind of cool!

This cool macro attachment I made for my Chinon 55mm 1.4 emanates an aperture of .95 . While it obviously has it's downsides being a DIY macro lens/attachment, for it's specific purpose of getting some of close detail sharp, it does the trick.

In politics and sociology,

divide and rule

(derived from Latin divide et impera) (also known as divide and conquer)

is a combination of political, military and economic strategy of gaining and maintaining power by breaking up larger concentrations of power into chunks that individually have less power than the one implementing the strategy.

In reality, it often refers to a strategy where small power groups are prevented from linking up and becoming more powerful, since it is difficult to break up existing power structures.

Sunflowers have to be one of the most fascinating plants. When you get up close and personal with one, and really look at what is going on, it's wild. Nature never ceases to amaze.

I went to wikipedia and it turns out this shot is basically a mathematics illustration. What you see in the spiral pattern is a, "golden angle, 137.5°, producing a pattern of interconnecting spirals, where the number of left spirals and the number of right spirals are successive Fibonacci numbers. It is a form of Fermat's spiral. The angle 137.5° is related to the golden ratio."

All that in the heart of a sunflower? Dig it. And here all I was trying to do was snap a cool macro! As for understanding the above math jargon? Well, that's a whole 'nother story! :D

I'm in Spain... I've been with my family for two weeks... I've been catching some sun tan and been swimming at the beach a lot after two years without... I'm in Barcelona until Monday, the city that I love... the one where I grew up to be the man I am today, where I formed myself as a journalist, where I learned what being a gay man was about... and I see some friends, hang with my sister, and share all this with Anton by my side...

And meanwhile, at home in NYC, wonderful things keep happenning, even when I'm gone...

Yes, my iPhone photography keeps opening some more doors... and I feel happy and proud, and very motivated to never stop trying to improve and learn more about the format. In fact, expect some very cool macro shots taken with a special lens for iPhone that my brother-in-law Tatsuya had delivered for me all the way from Japan, only place selling them.

So yes... things seems to be lookin up... and I smile while I can. Hope all is great with you too... and I apologize once again for not having the chance of catching up with your photos. I'll get up to speed once I'm back in New York.

Have a great weekend!!

'Narcissistic Fred' On Black

I had to go do house crap this morning, but we are moving just a few miles from my friends ranch so I stopped by for a visit. This is fred- he sat and showed off for no one (his hen his on eggs elsewhere in the yard) for a couple of hours. He is sooo full of himself! Definitely gorgeous and he knows it too!

Since this is the only chance I have had to shoot lately, you may have to deal with peacock photos for the next week or so if you are one of my contacts. Lots of cool macros though since last years chicks are hand tame and trained to be held!

The new, risqué game of life. Also a cool macro photograph. Way better when it's bigger on black, especially since you can see the halftoning on the board.

Not far from my house is some of these green plant.. semi-rose pattern... uuuhh... thingers! They were damp so I took advantage of some cool macro shot attempts. I did this one back in August, and here it's nearly the end of September, heh [going through my older files]. I'm also glad that the specs of dirt towards the center of this interesting plant came out so clearly.

Note: a big Thank You to artist Heidi Veronica for the info regarding this plant, it's called "Hen and Chicks" and it's a succulent.
