Memorial erected in 2000 commemorating the role women contributed to the construction yards of the Home Front during WWII. During WWII, four shipyards in Richmond with their 27 shipways produced 747 ships, more than any other location in the country. The memorial was built like the hull of a ship, with the size of a liberty ship, overlooking what was once the Kaiser Shipyards #2.

The memorial contributed directly to the establishment of Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historic Park in 2000. The park remains under development.

Contributing building.

Circa 1910. Wide two story corner commercial building with a mezzanine. While side elevation is plain, the upper story of façade features a notable amount of decorative brickwork, including recessed panels under the windows; a band of layered

bricks above the windows; and most notably, a band of bricks laid in a sawtooth-like pattern, a dentil

band, and decorative recessed panels. Original façade windows (grouped in threes) feature a large single

pane capped by a smaller decorative pane with muntins placed in a sunburst pattern. Slender brick piers (with decorative brickwork) extending above the parapet divide the façade into two large asymmetrical bays. Upper floor windows on the long side elevation are replaced. Two of the openings have been lengthened and small balconies added as part of a tax credit rehabilitation project. Two loading door

openings appear to be original.

Was the former city court building, Underwent a large renovation in 2011. Now 7887Main with shops and living space.

Houma, the parish seat for Terrebonne Parish, was incorporated in 1834. Main Street once a central shopping location for the community is seeing itself again with great places to eat, shop and walk around to view the hisoric buildings and beautiful oak trees.

The historic district starts at Barataria Boulevard and extends to New Orleans Boulevard.

It's a lovely area and well worth a visit before heading out to enjoy the Terrebonne treasures of marsh, wetlands and wildlife.

“Our mission is to support charities that contribute to a green and just world and the activities and the mission of the MSC connect seamlessly with this. With a global standard for sustainably caught fish, life in the world’s seas and oceans

remains protected for the future,

the world’s population is fed and

fishermen all over the world have an income. We are very pleased that thanks to our contribution MSC can work on this important mission.”

Merriam Park contributes to The Dream Rocket Project

3/5/2013

A rocket ship that used to take humans to the moon will be decorated with the artwork of Shawnee Mission students.

Merriam Park recently joined “The Dream Rocket Project,” an effort that is collecting thousands of works of art from around the world to be wrapped around the Saturn V Moon Rocket.

Located in the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Alabama, the 365-foot rocket will be transformed into a work of art in 2014.

Each Merriam Park student that participated created a panel of artwork out of cloth. On that panel, they were to share their vision of their own future and the future of the world. The Bears first sketched out their ideas and then used fabric, glitter, and paint to create their submission.

Prior to being wrapped around the rocket, student artwork will be displayed in exhibits housed in libraries and museums across the United States.
