Light is at the heart of our photographs. Understanding the nuances of light’s interaction with the camera is critical to our craft. The temperature, intensity, source of light, ISO, aperture, speed, camera type, lens type, focal length, and filters… the combinations are myriad and multilayered, revealing the beauty in even the darkest of scenes.

This is a photograph from the sixth annual running of the 'Streets of Athboy' 5KM Road Race and Fun Run which was held in the town of Athboy, Co. Meath, Ireland on Friday 9th August 2019 at 20:00. Tonight's event follows on from the very successful previous five runnings of the event. The race event was organised very successfully again by Mick Priest and his team of volunteers and helpers from the local athletics club Father Murphy AC and the local community. The Fr. Murphy club is based in rural Meath between the towns of Ballivor and Athboy. A credit to their establishment the club boasts facilities on 17 acres including a grass 400m and 1KM all weather walking track. Proceeds of the race this evening will contribute towards Fr. Murphy AC's efforts to build a tartan track at the club facility in Frayne. The support shown by the running community highlights the support which Fr. Murphy's AC has within the county of Meath and beyond.

Event management and electronic chip timing were provided by Popup Races (www.popupraces.ie)

The race itself starts on the Navan road approximately 1KM from the Registration Hall. The race follows a route away along the main street of Athboy and then turns left at the Cosy Pub onto the Kildalkey Road. This brings participants through a series of bends before a long straight stretch leading to a country laneway where there is a short loop before returning back onto the Kildalkey road. This returns back on the route where the race started on. The race finishes in the grounds of Athboy Community Centre. It is a good fair course and many participants feel that it offers the opportunity for fast running and setting personal bests. The first mile is well recognised as being particularly fast. Prizes were given in all of the usual categories. There was also an opportunity for those who registered early to get a lovely technical t-shirt for the race. Overall the race, as part of the Meath AAI series of races, continued and maintained the high standard of road race organisation in County Meath by Meath running and athletic clubs.

This shot is one of seven that I contributed to a large collection of new photos that hang in our church foyer. The theme for the project was, "The Church Unleashed," which refers to Christians being turned loose into the world to do God's work.

This one was printed on canvas at about 20x30". It pictures my then-91-year-old grandmother doing one of the things she does best--praying for her family and friends at her kitchen table. This was a posed shot that I had envisioned specifically for this project. The light is natural from a north-facing picture window.

In 1896, Archeologist Jesse Walter Fewke described Wukoki Pueblo as one of the most impressive masses of aboriginal masonry in the Southwest. He noted that from a distance it resembles an old castle. Despite exposure to the elements for 800 years, Wukoki which means "big house" in Hopi, stands as a tribute to the Puebloan ancestors who paused to farm here during the 1100s. Meticulous corners and lines of masonry rise up from the bedrock to a three-story height. (Source: National Park Service)

Wukoki is one of the best preserved prehistoric structures within Wupatki National Monument, but it has not been reconstructed. The National Park Service partially reinforced the pueblo in 1941 by installing wood braces, props, and wedges. Cement and mud mortars were used to further stabilize the walls. Later, a stabilization survey was conducted and the wall were again remortared with mud. Test trenches were dug in two of the rooms. This is the only modern excavation of the site. By 1954 more extensive stabilization was required. Workers used Portland Cement covered with clay mortar made from local soils. They braced the walls internally, using half-inch reinforcing steel, flat steel bars and concrete. Hidden within the masonry, these reinforcements help ensure the stability of the structure. Current preservation involves annual stabilization of walls, condition monitoring of both the pueblo structure and the surrounding hillsides, invasive plant removal, and trail maintenance. Stabilization differs from reconstruction in that it involves repair of existing wall only. Stabilization is an on-going project and is necessary to prevent the pueblos from deteriorating further. (Source: National Park Service)

Wupatki National Monument is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and Wukoki Pueblo is a contributing site.

This project fills a need for convention hotel product, expanding the City’s higher-end product offering, and contributing to growing a year-round resort destination.

The Cavalier project has a total cost of $235 million; it has several components, and was first approved for incentives by City Council in July 2013 with the renovation of the historic Cavalier Hotel, preservation of the lawn, and the Marriott with a parking garage on the Oceanside, for a total of $18 million. In February 2014, City Council also approved the project for the State’s Tourism Development Financing Program, (TDFP), which returns to the developer the 1% local sales tax paid by the project each year (along with 1% of the state sales tax, and the 1% access fee paid by the developer to the State). In March 2017, City Council approved an amendment to the TDFP, to include the Embassy Suites and an expanded parking garage on the oceanfront, increasing the value of the local TDFP to $8.17 million to be paid in annual installments of initially of $110,000, which will gradually escalate to $600,000 by Year 7. The total $8.17 million is estimated to be paid over approximately 14-to-15 years.

And it looks good too.......

The Jonathan Green House is in the Swansboro Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a contributing property.

Missoula,MT (Missoula County)

The Fort Missoula Historic District is composed of 32 contributing structures, a post cemetery, two historic parade grounds, and two groupings of foundations (those of the 19th Century Officers' Row and those of the World War II internment camp barracks) that date from the district's period of significance from 1877-1944 and are directly associated with the historical development of the Fort.

Fort Missoula, the only permanent military post in Montana west of the Continental Divide, was established in June, 1877. The strategic intent of the choice of the Fort location was for greater military control of the Indian tribes of western Montana and to assure the protection of white settlers from hostile Indian attack. By 1877, however, reservation lands had been established in western Montana and few major uprisings occurred which involved the soldiers.

Fort Missoula's significance rests less with its direct military role in quelling uprisings and more with the sequence of non-combative military uses of the property by the federal government and the consistent contribution Fort personnel have made to local economic development. Through the years, Fort Missoula has been used as the headquarters for the Black 25th Infantry Regiment, the place from where the potential military applications of the bicycle were explored, a government training school for skilled mechanics to aid in the World War I effort, the largest Civilian Conservation Corps Headquarters in the United States during the 1930's, a detention camp for Italian artists and seaman as well as Japanese-Americans during World War II, and, for a short time following World War II, Fort Missoula became a medium security prison camp for American soldiers. Engine No. 7 (1923) is a rare, Shay-type locomotive originally used by the Western Lumber Company of Milltown, Montana. It was later featured in the locally produced movie, “Timberjack”. (2)

This Khalsa School has been contributing wonderfully in spreading environment values among their pupils and area. This year the school organised a variety of programmes to commemorate the Sikh Environment Day. The celebrations began with prayers followed by painting and rangoli decorations competition, a special clean-up drive by kids and staff and finally food was served to staff and students in pattals in a very environment friendly way, where no disposables were used.
