The faded wall advertisement on the building known as the Dr. John B. Powers Store in Wake Forest revealed evidence of two products- dry goods and shoes. The building also called the Powers-Forensic Press Buildings was constructed about 1897. It is located in the Wake Forest Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a contributing property. The photograph was taken in 2017.

This is a photograph from the start of the 2nd annual running of the Trim AC 10 Mile Road Race and Fun Run which was held in Trim, Co. Meath, Ireland on Sunday 7th February 2016 at 12:00. The race attracted over 650 participants and already the event shows growth on last year's number of participants. The race started on the Trim/Athboy road on the town's ring road and proceded to take an anti-clockwise loop out towards the village of Dunderry and townland of Kilbride before returning back to the Trim Industrial Estate for the finish. The route is all quiet country roads with some hills at 3, 6, 8 mile segments. Today the weather was every runner's nightmare: very cold air temperatures and from mile 4 until the finish a very strong headwind. While the weather was dry without any rain the windy conditions made a very fair course challenging. Waterstops were provided at the 4.5 and 7 mile marks on the course. All access roads were well stewarded. The event was sponsored by Bewleys 1840 and many local business establishments. Credit must go to the Trim AC team for their flawless organisation. This race will continue to grow. For runners around the North Leinster area this 10 mile race serves as a perfect training progress stepping stone to the Bohermeen Half Marathon which will take place in March 2016 and is located only 15 minutes drive from Trim. This yet again proves that a great club with great local support and volunteers can organise great road races!

Timing and event management was provided by SportsSplit. Their website is here [www.sportsplits.com/] and will contain the results to today's race.

We have photographs from the one mile mark and the finish at 200 meters to go - they are all available on Flickr [https://www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/sets/72157664217257512]

USING OUR PHOTOGRAPHS - A QUICK GUIDE AND ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS

Can I use these photographs directly from Flickr on my social media account(s)?

Yes - of course you can! Flickr provides several ways to share this and other photographs in this Flickr set. You can share directly to: email, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Tumblr, LiveJournal, and Wordpress and Blogger blog sites. Your mobile, tablet, or desktop device will also offer you several different options for sharing this photo page on your social media outlets.

BUT..... Wait there a minute....

We take these photographs as a hobby and as a contribution to the running community in Ireland. We do not charge for our photographs. Our only "cost" is that we request that if you are using these images: (1) on social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter,LinkedIn, Google+, VK.com, Vine, Meetup, Tagged, Ask.fm,etc or (2) other websites, blogs, web multimedia, commercial/promotional material that you must provide a link back to our Flickr page to attribute us or acknowledge us as the original photographers.

This also extends to the use of these images for Facebook profile pictures. In these cases please make a separate wall or blog post with a link to our Flickr page. If you do not know how this should be done for Facebook or other social media please email us and we will be happy to help suggest how to link to us.

I want to download these pictures to my computer or device?

You can download this photographic image here directly to your computer or device. This version is the low resolution web-quality image. How to download will vary slight from device to device and from browser to browser. Have a look for a down-arrow symbol or the link to 'View/Download' all sizes. When you click on either of these you will be presented with the option to download the image. Remember just doing a right-click and "save target as" will not work on Flickr.

I want get full resolution, print-quality, copies of these photographs?

If you just need these photographs for online usage then they can be used directly once you respect their Creative Commons license and provide a link back to our Flickr set if you use them. For offline usage and printing all of the photographs posted here on this Flickr set are available free, at no cost, at full image resolution.

Please email petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com with the links to the photographs you would like to obtain a full resolution copy of. We also ask race organisers, media, etc to ask for permission before use of our images for flyers, posters, etc. We reserve the right to refuse a request.

In summary please remember when requesting photographs from us - If you are using the photographs online all we ask is for you to provide a link back to our Flickr set or Flickr pages. You will find the link above clearly outlined in the description text which accompanies this photograph. Taking these photographs and preparing them for online posting takes a significant effort and time. We are not posting photographs to Flickr for commercial reasons. If you really like what we do please spread the link around your social media, send us an email, leave a comment beside the photographs, send us a Flickr email, etc. If you are using the photographs in newspapers or magazines we ask that you mention where the original photograph came from.

I would like to contribute something for your photograph(s)?

Many people offer payment for our photographs. As stated above we do not charge for these photographs. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. If you feel that the photograph(s) you request are good enough that you would consider paying for their purchase from other photographic providers or in other circumstances we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.

Let's get a bit technical: We use Creative Commons Licensing for these photographs

We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?

The explaination is very simple.

Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.

ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.

Above all what Creative Commons aims to do is to encourage creative sharing. See some examples of Creative Commons photographs on Flickr: www.flickr.com/creativecommons/

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.

I want to tell people about these great photographs!

Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably http://www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets

One of the fundamental responsibilities of higher education is to provide open and equal opportunities for students to learn, succeed, and positively contribute to their local, national, and global societies. Great strides are being made in increasing educational access, retention completion, and success, yet there is still work to be done particularly for students from disadvantaged or marginalized groups. Unprecedented shifts in migration patterns are causing demographic changes around the world. Additionally, governments, societies, and higher education institutions are increasingly recognizing the need and responsibility to create legal and institutional frameworks for providing more and better opportunities for people from historically marginalized groups to gain access and achieve success at the university level.

From South Africa’s “Historically Disadvantaged Institutions,” to Brazil’s “Law of Social Quotas,” and a long tradition of “Minority Serving Institutions” in the United States, just to name a few, higher education institutions committed to providing educational opportunities for local communities marginalized along ethnic, racial, religious or other lines can be found on every continent. What’s more, in light of shifting demographics and the growing focus on educational opportunity and access, increasing numbers of colleges and universities will be serving students from marginalized groups. For too long, institutions serving students at the margins have operated in a vacuum, failing to collaborate across institutional types and across nations. This Salzburg session will bring together leaders from institutions serving marginalized populations with policy makers and researchers to develop a platform for finding solutions to these institutions’ common challenges and capitalizing on their strengths.

This program is being designed and implemented in partnership with the recently launched Center for Minority Serving Institutions at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education and with Educational Testing Service. From 2010 to 2012, Salzburg Global and Educational Testing Service collaborated on a series of sessions on “Optimizing Talent: Closing Educational and Social Mobility Gaps Worldwide.”

Calrailfans meet at Haggin, Sacramento, 18 Feb 2017

·

Our February Calrailfans meet was supposed to be at Lodi, however the heavy rain that has been soaking California contributed to a derailment on UP's Fresno Sub near Elk Grove and the line through Lodi was still shut down as crews worked to fix the track.

After considering a couple of other sites, we decided to move the meet to Haggin, as everything going north-south between Stockton and Sacramento would have to run on the ex-WP Sacramento Sub and anything going north from Roseville would also have to go via Haggin, as the Valley Sub north of Roseville is out of service due to the Yuba River bridge in Marysville having been damaged by high water.

So Haggin it was and we could not have picked a busier day to visit. Trains to or from the south that needed to go east or west had to back around the connecting tracks on the north side of the overpass so there were quite a few backup moves in addition to the through trains on both the Sac Sub and the ex-SP Martinez Sub that goes over the Sac Sub here.

The backdrop is the Blue Diamond almond plant, which produces nuts known in many countries.

The dogs had a good time and were a hit with many people.

We had a break between a couple of wet days, and while the weather was mostly cloudy, we did not get rained on.

I've been to Haggin any number of times over the years, but for some folks, it was their first visit. The consensus is that we want to come back, however it is doubtful that we will see Haggin this busy again.

Amtrak is notably missing. The Sacramento San Joaquins were running Stockton-Bakersfield, with bus connections to Sacramento. The Zephyr was only running Chicago-Salt Lake City due to a washout in eastern Nevada.

The education of women is believed to contribute not only to their individual and household prosperity and health but more generally to the development of their nations. However, despite growing efforts to reduce gender disparity in education, according to UNESCO, half of 157 countries in the world were unable to achieve the Millennium Development Goal of reducing gender disparity in primary and secondary education by 2015. Different studies have identified several factors influencing absenteeism or or dropout of girls from school. One such factor is poor sanitation, especially not having separate girls’ toilets, which can discourage girls from coming to school.

The project involves building a female toilet for girls at the Government Bilingual High School Penda Mboko which is in the Littoral Region of Cameroon. When completed, the project will serve girls between the ages of 11 - 17 who are students at the Government Bilingual High School Penda Mboko. Currently, these girls have to use the same toilets as boys and these toilets are have no doors. Therefore, the privacy of girls is not guaranteed and they avoid using the toilet. When finished, girls will have a separate toilet from boys and can use it in privacy. This will also help avoid open defecation around the school.

Great Dixter Gardens, East Sussex, UK: These historic Grade 1 gardens, which surround a medieval manor house, are truly inspirational. They have the most amazing, vibrant, and imaginative planting schemes I have ever seen in a garden anywhere! The level of visual detail and ‘complexity’ in the planting schemes is awesome: with so many different plants all contributing to the overall picture. I often stand for many minutes in this garden just ‘taking in the scene’. The more I look, the more I see and the more I appreciate the level of planning and effort that has gone into creating this visually dynamic country garden.

Although all the plants look very natural growing together, as though they have almost planted themselves in their growing positions, to get a garden looking this good with such exuberant colors and dense planting requires a very high level of maintenance indeed.

The attention to planting detail at Great Dixter even goes down to the superb arrangements of plants in containers located at strategic points throughout the garden. These are a fantastic combination of plant varieties, forms, colours, textures - and with brilliant use of foliage too.

Considering the gardens are built around a medieval English manor house (parts of which date back to the 15th century), the visitor could assume Great Dixter was just another conventional English garden. Whilst the garden structure (much of which was originally designed by the celebrated architect Edwin Lutyens ) has many conventional elements such as topiary, box and yew hedging, garden rooms, etc., the planting schemes developed by the late Christopher Lloyd are far more dynamic than the Gertrude Jekyl ‘muted palette harmonious approach’. In fact, some of the colour combinations in this highly influential and innovative garden are quite shocking, but most of the time they work really well and bring a great energy, vibrancy and life to the garden.

Photo Details: This photo shows a highly creative use of pot plants to produce an attractive display - there is just so much variety here - aeoniums, irisene, purple millet grass, pelargoniums, cannas, with agaves and succulents too.

Location: Dixter Road, Northiam, East Sussex, TN31 6PH, UK.

The gardens are situated near the village of Northiam, about ten miles north of the coastal town of Hastings and to the north-west of the picturesque ancient town of Rye.

Chatsworth House

Chatsworth is home to the 12th Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, and has been passed down through 16 generations of the Cavendish family.

The house is set in expansive parkland, backed by wooded, rocky hills, rising to heather moorland.

Construction began in 1549 and a succession of famous architects, including Bess of Hardwick, Capability Brown, Joseph Paxton, William Talman, James Paine, Thomas Archer and Jeffry Wyatville have all contributed to the magnificent mansion.

The Iris Foundation has the ambition to fundamentally contribute to the contemporary cultural life of St. Petersburg, the wider region, Russia and the international cultural world. It has taken the admirable initiative to expand its success of the Garage Centre for Contemporary Culture in Moscow and convert St. Petersburg’s New Holland Island into a cultural district. MVRDV developed a strategy to gradually redevelop the historic structure and add a new volume dedicated to Modern Art. Inside the new structure a series of activators are collected, being released in summer activating the district. New Holland Island as curatable space, the informal and contemporary inside the monumental city, a cultural Trojan Horse. The historic buildings are treated with upmost respect as imposed by the UNESCO environment and economically upgraded in a gentrification strategy comparable to organic urban renewal on a larger scale.

Only what evolves stays vivid and contemporary

Sulky racing at the Oxford County Fair, held each September at the Oxford County Fairgrounds, Norway/Paris.

Only harness racing was featured at the fair. Two gaits were used: pacing and trotting. A horse that broke gait had to be taken back to the proper gait in order to finish the race. The horses in this photo are pacers heading out of the home stretch turn.

Although established in 1841, it was not until the early summer of 1856 that the Oxford Agricultural Aid Society purchased for the Oxford County Agricultural Society 13 acres of land situated on "the plains" between Norway and Paris. The racetrack probably was not completed in 1856, the first races being run at the fair in 1857.

In later years, training and racing were carried out at the track in appropriate seasons throughout the year. Taken in 1956 to provide a site for the Oxford Hills Cooperative High School, racing did not occur again at the Oxford County Fair until 2003, when a track was completed at the new fair grounds in Oxford.

Rapid population growth can be a contributing factor to both greenhouse gas emissions and vulnerability to climate stresses. Early childbearing, high fertility rates, and short birth intervals are associated with poor maternal and child health outcomes as well as lower educational attainment and work force participation, which directly impede women’s ability to participate and invest in climate change adaptation. However, the positive benefits of voluntary family planning, either for emissions reductions or adaptation, have not figured prominently in climate policy discussions or those related to improving access to family planning.

To address this gap, the Population Reference Bureau and Worldwatch Institute formed an international Population Dynamics and Climate-Compatible Development Expert Working Group to identify policy opportunities to increase investment in family planning in climate-sensitive development initiatives. Join us for a presentation about the working group’s report and discussion with select working group members.
