The bridge was built by Minneapolis Union Railway to serve the Minneapolis Union Station. Known as the Stone Arch Bridge it was completed in 1883 and resembles a Roman viaduct. James Hill's, Great Northern Railway ran its tracks over the bridge. Originally, the bridge contained 23 limestone arches, measured 2,100 feet in length. In 1962, two arches were replaced by a steel Warren deck truss just below the Upper Lock and Dam to allow the passage of riverboat and barge traffic through the navigation channel. The Upper Lock and Dam was closed in 2015. In this photograph the former navigation channel had been lowered to allow for inspection of the channel, utility lines and related infrastructure. The bridge is located in the St. Anthony Falls Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a contributing property. Also, it was designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.

This is a photograph from the 37th Michael Manning Memorial "Dunshaughlin 10KM" Road Race and Fun Run which took place in Dunshaughlin, Co. Meath, Ireland on Saturday 18th June 2015 at 19:30. This race is widely acknowledged within the Irish running community as one of the best races in Ireland and is Ireland's oldest continuously held 10KM race. This year, as in previous years, the race attracted runners from not just all of Leinster but from the four corners of Ireland. The work of the organising committee must be commended on making this event possible. The Dunshaughlin 10KM has earned it's place at the top of the pedestal of Irish running through the sheer hard work of Dunshaughlin AC over the years. Road race events do not survive on their own. There must be dedication, hard work and a development vision amongst the committee and the host club. Well done to all.

The weather was perfect for running - it was a warm summer evening without any real wind or breeze. There was a light shower of rain for the first few minutes of the race which helped keep runners cool in the early stages of the race.

We have an extensive set of photographs from the race tonight taken at the 1 mile mark and then at the 400M and 600M to go mark. The full set is available at: www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/sets/72157669936408175

You can share directly to: email, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Tumblr, LiveJournal, and Wordpress and Blogger blog sites. Your mobile, tablet, or desktop device will also offer you several different options for sharing this photo page on your social media outlets.

BUT..... Wait there a minute....

We take these photographs as a hobby and as a contribution to the running community in Ireland. We do not charge for our photographs. Our only "cost" is that we request that if you are using these images: (1) on social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter,LinkedIn, Google+, VK.com, Vine, Meetup, Tagged, Ask.fm,etc or (2) other websites, blogs, web multimedia, commercial/promotional material that you must provide a link back to our Flickr page to attribute us or acknowledge us as the original photographers.

This also extends to the use of these images for Facebook profile pictures. In these cases please make a separate wall or blog post with a link to our Flickr page. If you do not know how this should be done for Facebook or other social media please email us and we will be happy to help suggest how to link to us.

I want to download these pictures to my computer or device?

You can download this photographic image here directly to your computer or device. This version is the low resolution web-quality image. How to download will vary slight from device to device and from browser to browser. Have a look for a down-arrow symbol or the link to 'View/Download' all sizes. When you click on either of these you will be presented with the option to download the image. Remember just doing a right-click and "save target as" will not work on Flickr.

I want get full resolution, print-quality, copies of these photographs?

If you just need these photographs for online usage then they can be used directly once you respect their Creative Commons license and provide a link back to our Flickr set if you use them. For offline usage and printing all of the photographs posted here on this Flickr set are available free, at no cost, at full image resolution.

Please email petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com with the links to the photographs you would like to obtain a full resolution copy of. We also ask race organisers, media, etc to ask for permission before use of our images for flyers, posters, etc. We reserve the right to refuse a request.

In summary please remember when requesting photographs from us - If you are using the photographs online all we ask is for you to provide a link back to our Flickr set or Flickr pages. You will find the link above clearly outlined in the description text which accompanies this photograph. Taking these photographs and preparing them for online posting takes a significant effort and time. We are not posting photographs to Flickr for commercial reasons. If you really like what we do please spread the link around your social media, send us an email, leave a comment beside the photographs, send us a Flickr email, etc. If you are using the photographs in newspapers or magazines we ask that you mention where the original photograph came from.

I would like to contribute something for your photograph(s)?

Many people offer payment for our photographs. As stated above we do not charge for these photographs. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. If you feel that the photograph(s) you request are good enough that you would consider paying for their purchase from other photographic providers or in other circumstances we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.

Let's get a bit technical: We use Creative Commons Licensing for these photographs

We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?

The explaination is very simple.

Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.

ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.

Above all what Creative Commons aims to do is to encourage creative sharing. See some examples of Creative Commons photographs on Flickr: www.flickr.com/creativecommons/

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.

I want to tell people about these great photographs!

Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably http://www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets

Calrailfans meet at Haggin, Sacramento, 18 Feb 2017

·

Our February Calrailfans meet was supposed to be at Lodi, however the heavy rain that has been soaking California contributed to a derailment on UP's Fresno Sub near Elk Grove and the line through Lodi was still shut down as crews worked to fix the track.

After considering a couple of other sites, we decided to move the meet to Haggin, as everything going north-south between Stockton and Sacramento would have to run on the ex-WP Sacramento Sub and anything going north from Roseville would also have to go via Haggin, as the Valley Sub north of Roseville is out of service due to the Yuba River bridge in Marysville having been damaged by high water.

So Haggin it was and we could not have picked a busier day to visit. Trains to or from the south that needed to go east or west had to back around the connecting tracks on the north side of the overpass so there were quite a few backup moves in addition to the through trains on both the Sac Sub and the ex-SP Martinez Sub that goes over the Sac Sub here.

The backdrop is the Blue Diamond almond plant, which produces nuts known in many countries.

The dogs had a good time and were a hit with many people.

We had a break between a couple of wet days, and while the weather was mostly cloudy, we did not get rained on.

I've been to Haggin any number of times over the years, but for some folks, it was their first visit. The consensus is that we want to come back, however it is doubtful that we will see Haggin this busy again.

Amtrak is notably missing. The Sacramento San Joaquins were running Stockton-Bakersfield, with bus connections to Sacramento. The Zephyr was only running Chicago-Salt Lake City due to a washout in eastern Nevada.

1110 Prince St

Built ca 1889

Built in 1845-46, this Greek Revival structure stands at 123 North Commerce Street. It is a contributing property to the Galena Historic District, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. It was listed individually in 1973.

The structure acted as a farmer's market where 12 stalls could be rented until ca. 1910. From its construction in the 1840s to the 1930s, it also served as the Galena City Hall. It is currently the Galena Welcome Center, and is owned and operated by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency as an Illinois State Historic Site.

Galena, located in northwestern Illinois, is one of the nation's foremost treasures, as it is home to one of the largest national historic districts in the Midwest. The town is a charming 19th-century community with a lovely downtown area and a number of well preserved brick and stone edifices.

Galena is the county seat of Jo Daviess County.

Casa Batlló (Catalan pronunciation: [ˈkazə βəˈʎːo]) is a renowned building located in the center of Barcelona and is one of Antoni Gaudí’s masterpieces. A remodel of a previously built house, it was redesigned in 1904 by Gaudí and has been refurbished several times after that. Gaudí's assistants Domènec Sugrañes i Gras, Josep Canaleta and Joan Rubió also contributed to the renovation project. The local name for the building is Casa dels ossos (House of Bones), as it has a visceral, skeletal organic quality.

Like everything Gaudí designed, it is only identifiable as Modernisme or Art Nouveau in the broadest sense. The ground floor, in particular, has unusual tracery, irregular oval windows and flowing sculpted stone work. There are few straight lines, and much of the façade is decorated with a colorful mosaic made of broken ceramic tiles (trencadís). The roof is arched and was likened to the back of a dragon or dinosaur. A common theory about the building is that the rounded feature to the left of centre, terminating at the top in a turret and cross, represents the lance of Saint George (patron saint of Catalonia, Gaudí's home), which has been plunged into the back of the dragon.

History

Initial construction (1877)

Antoni Gaudí in 1910

The building that is now Casa Batlló was built in 1877 by Antoni Gaudi, commissioned by Lluís Sala Sánchez. It was a classical building without remarkable characteristics within the eclecticism traditional by the end of the 19th century. The building had a basement, a ground floor, four other floors and a garden in the back.

Batlló family

The Batlló family

The house was bought by Josep Batlló in 1900. The design of the house made the home undesirable to buyers but the Batlló family decided to buy the place due to its centralized location. It is located in the middle of Passeig de Gracia, which in the early 20th century was known as a very prestigious and fashionable area. It was an area where the prestigious family could draw attention to themselves.

In 1906 Josep Batlló still owned the home. The Batlló family was very well known in Barcelona for its contribution to the textile industry in the city. Mr. Josep Batlló I Casanovas was a textile industrialist who owned a few factories in the city. Mr. Batlló married Amalia Godo Belaunzaran, from the family that founded the newspaper La Vanguardia. Josep wanted an architect that would design a house that was like no other and stood out as being audacious and creative. Both Josep and his wife were open to anything and they decided not to limit Gaudí. Josep did not want his house to resemble any of the houses of the rest of the Batlló family, such as Casa Pía, built by the Josep Vilaseca. He chose the architect who had designed Park Güell because he wanted him to come up with a risky plan. The family lived on the Noble Floor of Casa Batlló until the middle of the 1950s.

Renovation (1904-1906)

The atrium; Gaudí convinced Batlló to let him expand the central well of the building to let in light, instead of rebuilding.

In 1904 Josep Batlló hired Gaudí to design his home; at first his plans were to tear down the building and construct a completely new house. Gaudí convinced Josep that a renovation was sufficient and was also able to submit the planning application the same year. The building was completed and refurbished in 1906. He completely changed the main apartment which became the residence for the Batlló family. He expanded the central well in order to supply light to the whole building and also added new floors. In the same year the Barcelona City Council selected the house as a candidate for that year’s best building award. The award was given to another architect that year despite Gaudí’s design.

Refurbishments

Josep Batlló died in 1934 and the house was kept in order by the wife until her death in 1940 . After the death of the two parents the house was kept and managed by the children until 1954. In 1954 an insurance company named Seguros Iberia acquired Casa Batlló and set up offices there. In 1970, the first refurbishment occurred mainly in several of the interior rooms of the house. In 1983, the exterior balconies were restored to their original colour and a year later the exterior façade was illuminated in the ceremony of La Mercè.

Multiple uses

In 1993, the current owners of Casa Batlló bought the home and continued refurbishments throughout the whole building. Two years later, in 1995, Casa Batlló began to hire out its facilities for different events. More than 2,500 square meters of rooms within the building were rented out for many different functions. Due to the building's location and the beauty of the facilities being rented, the rooms of Casa Batlló were in very high demand and hosted many important events for the city.

The Iris Foundation has the ambition to fundamentally contribute to the contemporary cultural life of St. Petersburg, the wider region, Russia and the international cultural world. It has taken the admirable initiative to expand its success of the Garage Centre for Contemporary Culture in Moscow and convert St. Petersburg’s New Holland Island into a cultural district. MVRDV developed a strategy to gradually redevelop the historic structure and add a new volume dedicated to Modern Art. Inside the new structure a series of activators are collected, being released in summer activating the district. New Holland Island as curatable space, the informal and contemporary inside the monumental city, a cultural Trojan Horse. The historic buildings are treated with upmost respect as imposed by the UNESCO environment and economically upgraded in a gentrification strategy comparable to organic urban renewal on a larger scale.

"Priced, new, at a little under $3,000 in Germany, the 327 was one of those cars which cannot be described – it must be experienced. Its sheer performance, roadability and comfort defy description, yet the mechanical specifications appear neither unusual or unorthodox today. However, in 1938 the BMW was something of a pioneer with its tubular frame, independent front suspension and good power to weight ratio." – Road & Track, 1954.

Introduced in 1938, the 327 sports-tourer used the shortened, boxed, ladder-type chassis of the 326 saloon, shared by the 320, but with semi-elliptic rear springing in place of torsion bars. The gearbox was a Hurth four-speed manual unit with freewheel between 1st and 2nd gears, enabling clutch-less gear changes at low speeds, while there were hydraulic brakes all round and centralised chassis lubrication.

BMW's pushrod six had by now been enlarged to 1,971cc and developed around 55bhp in the 327, which could also be ordered with the 328 sports car's engine at extra cost. The 328's engine featured an ingenious new cylinder head, designed by Rudolf Schleicher, which incorporated hemispherical combustion chambers and inclined valves without recourse to overhead, or twin, camshafts. Instead, the engine's single, block-mounted camshaft and pushrod valve actuation were retained, thus avoiding an expensive redesign. Two rocker shafts were employed, one situated above each bank of valves, giving the engine an external appearance almost indistinguishable from that of a twin-overhead-camshaft design. Downdraught inlet ports contributed to the motor's deep breathing, and its tune-ability made it a popular choice for British racing car constructors, most notably Cooper, during the 1950s. The 328 engine produced 80bhp as standard, an exemplary output for a normally aspirated 2.0-litre unit at that time, with considerably more available in race trim.

When fitted with the standard engine the 327 was known as the 'Fast Tourer', and with the 328 unit installed as the 'Sport Cabriolet'. Deploying the 328's state-of-the-art engine in a more civilised and comfortable package, the 327/328 is relatively rare, with only 482 completed up to 1940 when production ceased. Autocar magazine had got its hands on a 328-engined Type 327 Sports Cabriolet in 1939, achieving the highly creditable maximum speed, for a 2.0-litre car, of 156km/h while testing the BMW at Brooklands. Having a very good power-weight ratio, these cars are much favoured by the Historic rallying fraternity for their unrivalled combination of refinement and high performance.

One of approximately 482 produced, this BMW 327/328 Sport Cabriolet was delivered new with a white paint and red interior to the German Army headquarters in Berlin on 7th September 1938. After the WWII the car moved to Canada and comes with an important file of correspondence containing numerous letters sent and received around 1970 by Barrie D Quance the owner at that time, a pre-war BMW enthusiast who owned several of them, in Canada. In his application for membership in the BMW Car Club of America, he mentions 'my pride and joy is a 1938 327/8 cabriolet'. We learn in a 1972 letter that he wanted to restore it carefully, and contacted several collectors whose advertisements he found in specialised magazines, as well as dealers such as Tony Mitchell Ltd, a Frazer Nash BMW specialist in England. We even have a list of parts he was looking for in a letter dated 14th February 1973, addressed to American and Canadian collectors. There is also correspondence with the BMW archives in Munich.

Around 2017 the BMW moved to Europe and in the period 2018-2023 was fully 'nut and bolt' restored by Oldtimer Racing in Prague with no expense spared, the total cost of the project (including car) was a staggering €400,000 (invoice on file). The 327/28 was completely stripped down and rebuilt with great care, using original parts or expertly re-manufactured components retaining the original (numbered) body panels. The body's timber frame was completely renewed, while the elegant and modern dark grey livery was chosen by the current owner. Offered fresh from its painstaking restoration with only some 100 kilometres on the clock since September 2023 when the car was finished, it will need some careful shakedown kilometres. A comprehensive file of photographs documenting the restoration comes with the car and the aforementioned history file. Also on file is the current Belgian registration document and some older in-period photographs.

A superb opportunity to acquire a beautifully restored and extensively documented pre-war sports convertible with elegant styling, once revolutionary for its time and highly regarded by the rally community for its exceptional power-to-weight ratio.

Sulky racing at the Oxford County Fair, held each September at the Oxford County Fairgrounds, Norway/Paris.

Only harness racing was featured at the fair. Two gaits were used: pacing and trotting. A horse that broke gait had to be taken back to the proper gait in order to finish the race. The horses in this photo are pacers heading out of the home stretch turn.

Although established in 1841, it was not until the early summer of 1856 that the Oxford Agricultural Aid Society purchased for the Oxford County Agricultural Society 13 acres of land situated on "the plains" between Norway and Paris. The racetrack probably was not completed in 1856, the first races being run at the fair in 1857.

In later years, training and racing were carried out at the track in appropriate seasons throughout the year. Taken in 1956 to provide a site for the Oxford Hills Cooperative High School, racing did not occur again at the Oxford County Fair until 2003, when a track was completed at the new fair grounds in Oxford.
